CALA COMPONENT E

SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS
LEVEL : FORM 4
SYLLABUS TOPIC: ALGEBRA – INEQUALITIES (Page 60)
SUBTOPIC: LINEAR PROGRAMMING
CALA TYPE: PEN & PAPER
CALA TITLE: CALCULATING THE OPTIMAL QUANTITIES IN
PROFIT MAXIMISATION

COMPETENCES/ SKILLS

 calculating
 drawing
 critical thinking
 interpreting skills
 problem solving
 decision making

BACKGROUND
Business people often experience challenging situations that call for quick informed decisions for the good
of their enterprises. Mathematical skills can be applied to address such dilemmas. Mr Gatsi, a poultry farmer
keeps chickens and turkeys at his poultry concern in Chesa, Mt Darwin and wants to sell some of his stock to
raise money to buy more feeds. He intends to sell at least 5 chickens and not more than 8 turkeys. The
number of turkeys he wants to sell should be greater than or equal to the number of chickens. A chicken
costs $6 and a turkey costs $8. How many of each does he need to sell to realise the maximum amount of
money he needs to buy more stock feeds?

THE CALA
This CALA comprises two parts, Part A and Part B and you are required to attend to both parts.
Part A
 formulate the required inequalities
 Draw the inequality graphs using suitable scale on both axes
Part B
 Interpret the inequality graphs to find the optimal quantities of chickens and turkeys to be sold
 Use of graphs to make informed decisions to advise Mr Gatsi accordingly.
CALA TIP
You may let x be the number of chickens and y be the number of turkeys to be sold.
LEARNER CALA GUIDE
Activities
You are required to
 Formulate correct inequalities from the given word problems
 Select a suitable scale to plot the graphs
 Draw the inequality graphs
 Interpret the graph to determine the maximum income that can be generated

How you will be assessed

The Facilitator will assess you on your aptitude in;
 correct formulation of inequalities [6]
 use of a suitable scale [2]
 graph plotting skills [8]
 graph interpretation and problem solving [4]
TEACHER CALA GUIDE

The facilitator will assess learners’ competencies through,

 Checking the correct formulation of inequalities
 Checking on use of suitable scale
 Assess the correctness of the graphs
 Check on graph interpretation and solutions to the problem at hand.
 Learners should adhere to submission deadline.
