The Legends of
Khasak
A captivating novel by O.V. Vijayan.
"The Legends of Khasak" is a celebrated novel written by O V Vijayan, first published in 1969.
The book features the life of a young man named Ravi, who arrives in Khasak as a teacher.

Portrayal of life in a South Indian village and its rich symbolism.

One of the most influential magical realist texts in Malayalam literature.

The overall structure and format of the book are unique. It is divided into twenty eight sections.

Each section focuses on different themes and events, including the arrival of Ravi, his interactions
with the villagers, his affairs, and the supernatural events that occur in the village.
About the Author: O.V. Vijayan (July 2, 1930—
March 29, 2005)
Indian cartoonist, pioneering novelist and short-story writer, and a
leading figure in Malayalam literature.

Graduated from Government Victoria College, Palakkad, and

received a master’s degree in English literature from Presidency
College.

In 1958 he left Kerala for Delhi to pursue an interest in the world of

cartoons. He also worked as a journalist with the The Hindu and the
The Statesman.

He wrote his first short story, "Tell Father Gonsalves", in 1953.

Vijayan was married to Theresa Gabriel, an academic and the couple
had a son, Madhu
khasakinte ithihasam, his first novel, cleaved the history of Malayalam fiction into pre-Khasak and
post-Khasak. It took 12 yrs of writing and rewriting to reach its final form.
The former era was romantic and formal; the latter is modernist, post-modernist , with tremendous
experimentation in style and content.

The narrative’s use of magic realism — there’s no specific plot or storyline, and nothing really
‘happens’ — was a sharp departure from the prevailing works then, in Malayalam and beyond.

The novel was translated into English by Vijayan in 1994 (under the title The Legends of Khasak ).
The English version has also been translated into German by Ursula Gräfe.

Other works: Gurusagaram , Pravachakante Vazhi and Thalamurakal Vijayan authored many
volumes of short stories, which range from the comic to the philosophical.
He never forgot his beloved Palakkad, where the 'wind whistles through the passes and the
clattering black palms'. He created a magical Malabar in his works, one where the mundane and the
inspired lived side-by-side. His Vijayan-land, a state of mind, is portrayed vividly in his work.
O V Vijayan passed away at the age of 75 in March 29,2005 due to Parkinson's Disease.

were modeled after real-life characters whom Vijayan encountered in

Thasrak. The character Appukkili was originally created by Vijayan for his
short story "Appukkili" .
Some main events

Arrival in Khasak:
Ravi arrived Khasak in the year 1951 and is greeted by
the village headman, Shivaraman Nair. As Ravi begins
to settle into his new life, he meets various characters
from the village such as Maimuna, Nizam Ali, and
Madhavan Nair etc.

Nizam Ali's Proclaim:

Nizam Ali proclaimed himself to be Syed Mian Sheiks Khazi, the folk of
Khasak are quick to accept him as such. He hears the voice of djinn
within him. This event is a turning point in the novel, as it marks a shift
from the idyllic and mystical world of Khasak to a more realistic and
gritty portrayal of village life.

Smallpox:
The death of many villagers including children due to smallpox is a significant event in the
story. It contributes to the overall atmosphere of melancholy and despair in the novel.

Through the pages

1 The storyline of "The Legends of Khasak" chronicles Ravi's life in the village of Khasak.
The novel starts and ends in the same bus stop Koomankavu.

2 Ravi represents a typical child deprived of parental love and care from very young age.

Spoiled the bright future that lay ahead of him by declining an offer of a Fellowship in
the Princeton University. So all of these finally brings him into a small hamlet called
Khasak.

3 However, Khasak is a place of mystical elements. He connects with a man named

Madhavan Nair. In the latter part of the story, he is seen to have changed into a sexual
maniac, a reckless drunkard of spurious country liquor. Padma tries to seeks him out in
the end.

4 Supernatural elements of the novel, including an encounter with a ghost and a flood
that results from a curse put on the village's priest.

The novel ends when Ravi begins his journey to some other realms of existence. The
existential puzzle of man as to why he should exist is explored in this novel.

5 What Vijayan narrates, however, is not Ravi’s story – it is the history of Khasak in all its
myriad, yet dark, hues.

The novel also narrates the struggles of character both at psychic and physical level. It
can be a story of any one of us with slightly different levels of struggle and shame.

It also captures the nuances of ideologies- welfarism , communism and conservatism-

which were prevalent in the India of early 70s .

6 In summary, "The Legends of Khasak" is a stunning novel that weaves together

elements of rural life, mysticism, and spirituality. The book's unique structure and
format, along with its memorable characters and evocative symbolism, make it an
engaging read and an important contribution to South Indian literature.

Disadvantages:

The novel can be challenging to navigate the readers unfamiliar with the cultural and historical
context of Kerala.
Some readers may find the narrative pacing to be slow, as the story unfolds gradually, focusing
more on character development and introspection rather than plot-driven events.
My view:
"The Legend of Khasak" provides profound insights into the cultural,
social, and historical context of Kerala.

Themes of alienation, spirituality, and the human quest for meaning

resonate deeply.

What I enjoyed the most was the depiction of the, many folklores and
superstitions of Khazak and how the characters’ lives were influenced by
these collective imaginations.

The highlight of this book is not the plot, but the setting and the
microcosm that the author builds.

"Khasakinte Ithihasam" is not merely a story; it is an experience—a

journey into the heart of humanity itself.
Conclusion: The Enduring Legacy of
The Legends of Khasak
"Embark on an enchanting journey into the heart of Kerala's folklore and the human spirit with
'Khasakinte Ithihasam'—a captivating literary masterpiece that will definitely leave you spellbound and
enriched."
