CONIC (conic section) – a curve formed by a plane passing

through a double napped circular cone.

The four curves

1. Ellipse
2. Circle
3. Parabola
4. Hyperbola

The graph of the second-degree Equation of the form

Ax²+Bxy+Cy²+Dx+Ey+F=0

Determine by the values of B² -4AC.

General equation of the circle

x²+y²+Dx+Ey+F=0
Where: D, E and F are real numbers

STANDARD EQUATION OF THE CIRCLE

If the circle is not at the origin. The center is at (h, k)

( x − h) 2
+ (y − k) = r2
2

Solve for radius.

r= ( x − h) 2
+ (y − k)
2

or r² = (x - h)² + (y - k)²
If the circle is at the origin
x2+y2=r2 r is the radius

Examples:
1. Write the standard equation of Circle. The center at ( -5,0)
and radius 4.8
h = -5
k=0
r = 4.8
( x − h) 2
+ (y − k) = r2
2

Solution:
( x − (− 5)) 2
+ ( y − (0)) = (4.8)
2 2

( x + 5) 2
+ y 2 = 23.04

2. Write the standard equation of Circle whose center at (4, -

3) and a point on the circle (2,1)
h=4 x=2
k=-3 y=1
r² =
r² = (x - h)² + (y - k)²
= (2-4)² + (1-(-3))²
= (-2)² + (4)²
= 4+16 r² = 20
Solution:

( x − h) 2
+ (y − k) = r2
2

( x − 4)
2
+ ( y − (− 3)) = 20
2

( x − 4)
2
+ ( y + 3) = 20
