3. Circling around a pole
A mass, which is free to move on a horizontal frictionless plane, is attached to one end of a massless
string which wraps partially around a frictionless vertical pole of radius r. You hold onto the other end of
the string. At t = 0, the mass has speed v0 in the tangential direction along the dotted circle of radius R
shown. (R = 2r). Your task is to pull on the string so that the mass keeps moving along the dotted circle.
You are required to do this in such a way that the string remains in contact with the pole at all times.
(You will have to move your hand around the pole, of course). Find time for which this is possible :-
⇒ v(t) =
Remark : Note that v becomes infinite when
t=T= .
In other words, you can keep the mass moving in the desired circle only up to time T. After that, it
is impossible. (Of course, it will become impossible, for all practical purposes, long before v
beomes infinite.) The total distance, d = , is infinite, because this integral diverges (barely,
like a log) as t approaches T.

6. Two small identical smooth blocks A and B are free to slide on a frozen lake. They are joined together
by a light elastic rope of length 2L which has the property that it stretches very little when the rope
becomes taut. At time t = 0, A is at rest at x = y = 0 and B is at x = L, y = 0 moving in the positive y-
direction with speed V.

SECTION-I (iii) : (Maximum Marks: 12)
This section contains FOUR (04) Matching List Sets.
Each set has ONE Multiple Choice Question.
Each set has TWO lists : List-I and List-II.
List-I has Four entries (P), (Q), (R) and (S) and List-II has Five entries (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5).
FOUR options are given in each Multiple Choice Question based on List-I and List-II and ONLY ONE
of these four options satisfies the condition asked in the Multiple Choice Question.
Answer to each question will be evaluated according to the following marking scheme:
Full Marks : +3 ONLY if the option corresponding to the correct combination is chosen;
Zero Marks : 0 If none of the options is chosen (i.e. the question is unanswered);
Negative Marks : –1 In all other cases.

(shown in figure) parallel to surface. Force F varies linearly with time and F0 is non-zero constant force.
List – II may represent possible acceleration time graphs, a1 and a2 are acceleration of mass m1 and
