Math 241: Homework Set B Week 2

Carefully print your name and NetID in the fields below.

(NOT your UIN, your NetID. This is the part before @illinois.edu in your email.)

There are 3 problems worth 5 points each, for a total of 15 points.

• You are allowed to collaborate with your classmates, but you must write and submit your
own solutions.

• Late homework will not be accepted.

• If you print this HW sheet, then use the space provided under each question.

• If you are writing this on your own paper, then use one page per question.

• Don’t use a tablet.

• Use a dark pencil or black pen. Your work must be legible when it is photographed/scanned.

• You are required to show your work on each problem. All problems require demonstrated
work supporting your answer and/or a brief justification (as appropriate).

• Organize your work in a reasonably neat and coherent way. All work for a particular question
should be kept together and in order.

• The general grading rubric for each homework question is as follows:

– Effort: 4 points This must be a demonstrated substantial attempt that makes reasonable
sense even if it turns out to be the wrong approach. If a problem has multiple parts, and
you only attempt part of it, then you may only get a fraction of the effort points.
– Correct approach: 1/2 point. If the approach is correct, you get an additional 1/2
point. You will still get this 1/2 point if you make some mistakes.
– Final answer: 1/2 point. If you have the right approach and you get everything correct,
you get an additional 1/2 point.

As you can see, the bulk of the grade is on making a meaningful effort to obtain a correct
answer - not on the final answer itself. Essentially, if on each problem, you make a reasonable
attempt but your work is wrong, you could still get 12/15 (a B-) on the homework.
1. (5 points) Part of some level sets of a smooth function f : R2 → R are pictured below.

Answer the questions below. Briefly justify your answers.

(a) Assume u is tangent to the level set f (x, y) = 6, is the dot product ∇f (a) · u positive,
negative, or zero?

(b) Assume v is a unit vector, is the directional derivative Dv f (b) positive, negative, or zero?

(c) Is the partial derivative fx (c) positive, negative, or zero?

(d) Is the partial derivative fx (d) positive, negative, or zero?

(e) Assume w is a unit vector, is the directional derivative Dw f (e) positive, negative, or zero?
Does this value depend on the direction w?

2. (5 points) Find the equation of the tangent plane to the graph of the function:

f : R2 → R, f (x, y) = x3 + 3y 2 + xy + 1

at the point (2, 3, f (2, 3)).

3. (5 points) Consider the level surfaces given by F (x, y, z) = 0 and G(x, y, z) = 0 where:
√ √
F (x, y, z) = x2 + y 2 + z 2 − 4 G(x, y, z) = 2 x − x2 − 2y 2 − 2 z − 2 xz − z 2 − 4

√ √
Verify that these surfaces are tangent to each other at the point 2, 0, − 2 .
