iv. Which of the above variables are categorical and which are quantitative variables?
(2 marks)
v. Are arithmetic operations appropriate for the variable “adoption issue”? give your
reasons (7 marks)

A group of young businesswomen wish to open a high fashion boutique in a vacant store
but only if the average income of households in the area is at least ksh. 250,000. A
random sample of 9 households showed the following results

Kshs. 230,000 Kshs. 270,000 Kshs. 260,000 Kshs. 220,000

Kshs. 240,000

Assume the population of incomes is normally distributed

i. Compute the sample mean (2 marks)

ii. Compute the standard deviation (4 marks)
iii. State the hypotheses for this problem (2 marks)
iv. Compute the test statistic (4 marks)

QUESTION TWO (12 MARKS)

a) A professor at a local community college noted that the grades of his students were
normally distributed with a mean of 74 and a standard deviation of 10. The professor has
informed us that 6.3 percent of his students received A’s while only 2.5 percent of his
students failed the course and received F’s
i. What is the minimum score needed to make an A? (4 marks)
ii. What is the maximum score among those who received an F? (4 marks)
iii. If there were 5 students who did not pass the course, how many students took the
course? (4 marks)

University has been hiring older individuals. In order to determine whether there has been
an increase in the average age of all the lecturers, a sample of 64 lecturers was selected. The
average age in the sample was 45 years with a standard deviation of 16 years. Let α = 05

a) State the null and the alternatively hypotheses both in symbols and words (4 marks)
b) Compute the test statistics (4 marks)
c) Test to determine whether or not the mean age of all lecturers is significantly more than
40 years (4 marks)

QUESTION FOUR (12 MARKS)

Information regarding random samples of annual salaries (in thousands of dollars) of doctors
in three different specialties is shown below

Sample variance 16 18 20

a) Compute the overall mean x (3 marks)

b) State the null and alternative hypothesis to be tested (2 marks)

c) Show the complete ANOVA table for this test including the test statistics (4 marks)
d) The null hypothesis is to be tested at 95% confidence. Determine the critical value for
this test. What do you conclude? (3 marks)
