Steerforth Again
1- Why did David visit London? What did he do there?
 He was in a couple days vacation after he finished his school. Miss Betsy suggested him to
have this vacation before he decided what profession he would do. He went sightseeing.
2- Where did David stay in London? Who did he meet there?

 He stayed in The Golden Cross Hotel, he was given a small dark room on the high-up
floors but he didn’t complain. He met Steerforth.
3- Why were David and Steerforth doing in London?

 David has just finished school and he was sent by his aunt to have a vacation in London
before deciding what profession he was going to do. Steerforth was studying in oxford
university.
4- What were David and Steerforth’s opinions about London?

 David liked London so much as there were many interesting places to visit, like:
sightseeing, museums and theatres. But Steerforth believed it was boring.
5- What did Steerforth do when David told him about his small dark room in the hotel?
 He complained to the hotel manager who moved David to a large airy comfortable room
on the first floor next to Steerforth’s room.
6- What activities did David and Steerforth do together during David’s vacation in London?
 They visited the theater, the museums and the zoo. They went sightseeing, riding,
swimming and boating. They had a wonderful time.
7- Where did David and Steerforth travel after finishing the vacation in London?
 They travelled to Yarmouth. David wanted to visit Peggotty because he didn’t saw her for
7 years. Steerforth agreed to travel to visit the Peggottys with David although he didn’t
like working people and used to make fun of them.
8- How did Peggotty feel when she saw David after 7 years in Yarmouth for the first time?
 Peggotty was surprised, pleased and she cried when she recognised him. David kept
writing to Peggotty regularly but they have never met for the last 7 years. Peggotty
insisted on David staying with her in the little bed room that she kept for him in her house
while Steerforth stayed in the hotel.
9- What news did Daniel Peggotty told David and Steerforth when they visited the Peggottys
in the old boathouse?
 It was a dark windy winter evening when David and Steerforth visited the Peggottys who
were laughing happily. Daniel welcomed David and Steerforth warmly then he announced
the news of Emily who agreed to become Ham’s wife.
10- How did David feel when he heard the news about Emily and Ham’s marriage?
 He felt a little jealous because he was unsure if he still loved Emily or not. David didn’t
know what to say but Steerforth with a few well-chosen words made them all feel happy.
11- What was Steerforth’s opinion about Ham and Emily?

 Steerforth said cold words about Ham, he told David that Emily is a lovely girl but Ham is
a coarse young man.

12- How did David feel about Steerforth’s opinion about Ham?
 He was annoyed a little and surprised but he knew that Steerforth always made fun and
telling jokes on people who were poorer and less educated than him.
13- Why did Mrs. Betsy visit David in London?

 After returning from Yarmouth David discovered that his aunt arrived at London booked
several days in the Golden Cross Hotel, she came to discuss what profession (job) he would
do after leaving school. She suggested him to work as a lawyer. David liked the idea.
14- Where was David trained as a lawyer?

 He trained at Mr. Spenlow who was a partner in an important law firm. Betsy took David
to Mr. Spenlow’s firm and paid one thousand pounds for David there. David promised to
work hard to be a successful lawyer.
15- Where did David live in London?

 Mrs. Betsy rented David a small flat at the top of a house near the law courts in London
before she returned to Dover. David moved there at once.
16- How did Steerforth influence David?

 After David started working in Mr. Spenlow’s office for two days he felt lonely and then
Steerforth visited David with other two friends. David bought some food, fruit and many
bottles of wine from the market they had a big party. David was completely drunk.
17- Where did they go after the party in David's small flat? Who did they meet there?
 They went to theatre, David was so drunk. He met Agnes there she was sad for David and
asked him to let his friends take him home.
18- Who did Agnes warn David about?

 She warned him about his dark angel, Steerforth. Agnes was worried about Steerforth’s
bad influence on David s he made him drunk and acted wrongly in the theatre. David
defended Steerforth saying he wasn’t responsible for making David drunk.
19- What did Uriah Heep want? Why did Mr. Wickfeild have to accept Uriah’s desire?
 He wanted to be Mr. Wickfield’s partner. Mr. Wickfield was unhappy since Agnes'
mother died so he started drinking and neglect his work. Uriah was very clever and knew
all of these so he was useful to Mr. Wickfield. Uriah wanted to be Mr. Wickfield’s partner.

 David said these words to Steerforth when he met him in London. David was having a

so happy to meet Steerforth.

 Daniel Peggotty said these words to the Peggottys when David and Steerforth visited them
in their house Yarmouth. Daniel was happy and welcomed them warmly then he told them
the happy news about Emily and Ham who would get married soon.
5- ‘‘What a lovely girl! And what a coarse young man she’s engaged to!’’ (Comment)
 Steerforth said these words to David after meeting the Peggottys in Yarmouth, Steerforth
expressed his opinion about Emily and Ham. Steerforth always made fun and telling jokes
on people who were poorer and less educated than him. David felt a little surprised.
6- ‘‘I wish I could control myself better! I hate myself sometimes!’’ (Comment)
 Steerforth said these words to David after leaving Yarmouth and travelled back to
London. Steerforth was sad because he would do harm to the Peggottys (Emily and Ham)
in the future. David didn't understand his words and forgot them soon but he remembered
them later.
‘‘I've been thinking about your future profession. How would you feel about becoming a

lawyer?’’ (Comment)
 Mrs. Betsy said these words to David after returning from Yarmouth, she was concerned
about David's future profession and she suggested David to work as a lawyer.
8- ‘‘David, please do as what I say. Ask our friends to take you home.’’ (Comment)
 Agnes said these words to David when she met David in the theatre in London, David was
very drunk, she asked him to let one of his friends take him home.
9- ‘‘I’m so sorry, Agnes, I said that you saw me like that. I wish I were dead.’’ (Comment)
 David said these words to Agnes when he visited her in London after she saw him in the
theatre drunk. He apologised to her.
10- ‘‘But if I were you, I’d warn you-to stay away from your bad angel.’’ (Comment)
 Agnes said these words to David when he visited her in her house in London after she saw
him drunk in the theatre with Steerforth. Agnes was worried about David because of the
bad influence Steerforth had on David’s behaviour.
‘‘He is my trusted friend! He helps me and guides me1 it wasn’t his fault that I got drunk,

 David said these words to Agnes when he visited her in London after she saw him in the
theatre drunk. Agnes warned David of Steerforth because she was worried from bad effect
Steerforth had on David.
12- ‘‘I think he is going to be my father’s partner.’’ (Comment)

 Agnes said these words to David when he visited her in her house in London, she
complained of Uriah Heep who wanted to be her father’s partner. She told him about her
father sadness after her mother’s death which made him neglect his work and started
drinking. This was Uriah’s chance to over control the work and Mr. Wickfeild had no
choice and accepted this .
