FREQUENCY CONVERTERS

1. DESCRIPTION
A. Scope of Manual

This manual contains installation instructions for the Frequency Converter listed on the title page manufactured
by Avionic Instruments, Inc. (AI²), Avenel, New Jersey 07001. See Figure 1 for illustration of unit.

B. Purpose of Equipment

The frequency converters converts 320-700 Hz, three phase 115/200 Vrms into 50 Hz or 60 Hz, single phase, 115
Vrms, 120 Vrms, 100 Vrms, or 230 Vrms at 3.5KVA or 2KVA.

C. Description (See Figure 1)

The Model 4C3500-( ) Frequency Converters deliver 3.5 kVA and the Model 4C2000-( ) Frequency Converters
deliver 2.0 k VA into loads of power factor 0.75 lagging to 0.80 leading. Under normal operating conditions,
efficiency is 80 percent or greater.

The Frequency Converters have a circuit breaker which contains a relay-trip coil which causes the circuit breaker
to open under the following fault conditions: output overvoltage, output out of frequency, output dc content. The
circuit breaker must be reset manually after 10 seconds. The frequency converter returns to normal function if the
circuit breaker has been reset and the fault condition has cleared.

The Frequency Converters can be connected in three-phase configuration for a three-phase output.

Units with the suffix NB do not have a circuit breaker or on/off switch on the front panel. Units with this suffix
have a latching relay circuit – the input power must be interrupted for a minimum of 10 seconds to reset the unit.

The frequency converters are designed to meet the environmental requirements which include shock, vibration,
acceleration, altitude, humidity, high temperature, low temperature, salt, and fog. The frequency converters are
designed to operate in altitudes up to 55,000 feet, non-temperature controlled (-55C to +71C), and severe
humidity (up to 95% non-condensing) environments. Burn-in and acceptance testing have been performed at AI²
to ensure high reliability. The frequency converters are shipped assembled and should be installed and connected
according to the instructions in the Installation section. No adjustments are required at installation or during the
operational life of the unit.

FREQUENCY CONVERTERS

D. Protection

The frequency converters shut down, to prevent damage to itself, if the input voltage becomes too low (55 to 90
Vrms) or too high (> 125 Vrms).

The frequency converters shut down to protect the load if the output voltage becomes too high (110 to 115%) or
if the output frequency becomes too high or too low (+ 20%). During overload and over temperature conditions,
the units are self-resetting and cycle on and off automatically.

E. Remote On/Off Option (See Figure 4)

The frequency converters are equipped with the remote on/off option. A 115 Vrms, 1A SPST switch is connected
between connector J2 pins labeled remote and remote return. The unit is turned on when the switch is open and
turned off when the switch is closed.

Frequency converters with suffix RR and GIVX are equipped with reverse remote. Remote ON/OFF is enabled
when the switch is closed, and inhibited when the switch is open.

E. Physical and Mechanical Requirements

Figures 2 through 4 are the outline drawings for the frequency converters and show all connector pin
connections. Also given are the maximum overall dimensions.

The converter must be mounted with sufficient clearance to permit air to enter the unit.

A minimum clearance of three inches is recommended between units, side to top. However, a clearance of 1.5
inches is adequate if the facing wall is non-heat producing and/or not a fan intake surface. (See Figure 7)

The clearance at the rear of the unit, which is measured from the face of the rear of the fan to the rear wall, can
be two inches provided the side and top clearance is large. A clearance of four inches is recommended at the rear
of the unit if the top and side clearance is minimal.

F. Electrical Requirements
WARNING: MAKE ALL CONNECTIONS WITH THE FREQUENCY CONVERTER
OFF.

CAUTION: USE ONLY CONNECTIONS SPECIFIED IN THIS MANUAL.

CONSULT AI² BEFORE MAKING ANY CONNECTIONS NOT
RECOMMENDED HERE.

Paragraphs (1) through (3) describe the electrical requirements for the frequency converter.

(2) Circuit Breakers

Thermal or magnetic circuit breakers may be used in the output. When selecting a circuit breaker, be sure
to choose a circuit breaker with a delay that is appropriate for the type of load to be supplied. The input
must be protected with a 3-pole, 400 Hz long-time-delay circuit breaker. A 20 Amp circuit breaker is
used with 3500 VA models.

Units with the suffix NB do not have a circuit breaker or on/off switch on the front panel. Units with this
suffix have a latching relay circuit that latches the unit off for the following fault conditions: output
overvoltage, out of frequency, or DC content – the input power must be interrupted for a minimum of 10
seconds to reset the unit.

(3) Wire Gages

Refer to Table 2 for the appropriate wire gage for each application. The values in Table 2 are
recommended only. The installer is responsible for the system design to comply with the appropriate
specifications and regulations with reference to wire gauge, circuit breaker, etc.

G. Electrical Connections

(1) Input

Using 5-wire shielded cable of the gage specified in Table 2, make the following connections to mating
connector P1:

(a) Connect 115 VAC input leads to pins A, B, and C of P1.

(2) Output

Using 3-wire shielded cable of the gage specified in Table 2, make the following connections to mating
connector P2:

(a) Connect AC output lead through circuit breaker to pin D

(b) Connect AC return leads through circuit breaker to pins E.

(3) Remote on/off option: (See Figures 2 through 4)

(a) Using 22 AWG single-wire shielded cable, fabricate a remote on/off cable.

(b) Connect one end of the cable to J2 remote off pin.

(c) Connect the other end of the cable to the J2 remote return pin or the neutral on the input power
source. (See Figures 2 through 4)

(d) Connect the cable shield to chassis ground at input power source and frequency converter.

(e) Cut the wire at the appropriate point and connect to a 115Vrms, 1A remote on/off SPST switch.

CAUTION When the cable run is long and/or the environment is noisy (electrical), a small signal relay
should be located near the connector acting as the remote closure, and the relay coil energized
via the long run of cable.

WARNING: When J2 remote off pin is open, 115Vac, 60Hz will appear at there. The remote on/off switch
must be rated for 115Vac, 1A. When the input neutral is grounded, grounding the J2 remote off
pin will remote the unit off.

CAUTION Occasionally when the remote on/off is used to turn the unit off, the unit may latch off and need
to be reset by interrupting and then reapplying the input power. This phenomenon can occur
when the input voltage is at the high end of its tolerance and the source has a high reactance
which causes the source to overshoot when the load is removed. This causes the unit to act as if
there were an input overvoltage, actuating its protection circuit.

FREQUENCY CONVERTERS

NOTE: The frequency converter operates normally when the remote on/off switch is opened. Its output is
inhibited when the remote on/off switch is closed.

Frequency converters with suffix RR and GIVX are equipped with reverse remote. Remote
ON/OFF is enabled when the switch is closed, and inhibited when the switch is open.

(4) See Table 3 Fault Matrix for fault conditions and their indications and reset points.

H. Removal Instructions

(1) Unfasten ARINC hold-down brackets on bottom edge of front panel or remove the six mounting screws
on the bottom of the unit.

(2) Remove the frequency converter from the rack.

I. Fault Monitor Option (See Figure 6)

(1) Fabricate a fault monitor cable using 22 AWG, 2-wire shielded cable.

(2) Connect cable to J2, Pin C. This cable can be connected to an indication device, such as a lamp or a
relay.

(3) Connect the indication device to the positive output of a 15 to 40 Vdc source. The indication device
should not draw more than 100 mA.

(4) Connect J2, Pin G of the cable to negative terminal of the 15 to 40 Vdc source.

NOTE: For all models except the 4C3500-1A-NB-WL-2110, Lamp On indicates no fault condition;
Lamp Off indicates fault condition. For the 4C3500-1A-NB-WL-2110, Lamp Off indicates no
fault condition; Lamp On indicates fault condition.

J. Three-Phase Configuration (See Figure 9)

NOTES:

1. The frequency converter chassis should be connected to earth or aircraft ground.

2. The neutral of the three-phase input and the neutral of the three-phase connected output are floating with
respect to ground and my be grounded if necessary

3. Three converters may be connected in three-phase wye configuration. Each phase of the wye may consist
of frequency converters connected in parallel, to extend the power rating of the system.
