Tutorial (1) Solution

Machinery Fundamentals
Problem 1
A motor’s shaft is spinning at a speed of 3000 r/min. Calculate the shaft speed in radians per second.
Answer
2𝜋𝑛 2𝜋 (3000)
𝜔= = = 188.5 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠
60 60

Problem 2
A flywheel with a moment of inertia of 4 kg m2 is initially at rest. If a torque of 5 N m (counterclockwise) is
suddenly applied to the flywheel, Calculate the speed of the flywheel after 5 s. Express that speed in both
radians per second and revolutions per minute.
Answer
∵ 𝜏 = 𝐽𝛼
𝜏 5 𝑟𝑎𝑑
∴𝛼= = = 1.25 2
𝐽 4 𝑠
𝑟𝑎𝑑
𝜔 = 𝛼𝑡 = 1.25 × 5 = 6.25
𝑠
2𝜋𝑛 60 𝜔
∵ 𝜔= ∴𝑛= = 59.68 𝑟𝑝𝑚
60 2𝜋

Problem 3
A motor is supplying 70 N.m of torque to its load. If the motor’s shaft is turning at 1500 r/min, what is the
mechanical power supplied to the load in watts? In horsepower?
Answer
2𝜋𝑛 2𝜋(1500)
𝑃 = 𝜏𝜔 = 𝜏 ( ) = 70 × = 10995.57 𝑊
60 60
𝑃𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑡 10995.57
𝑃ℎ𝑝 = = = 14.74 ℎ𝑝

Problem 4
A force of 20 N is applied to a cylinder, as shown in Figure 1. If the cylinder has a radius pf 0.35 m and a
mass moment of inertia of 6 kg.m2, calculate:
a) The magnitude and direction of the torque produced on the cylinder.
b) The angular acceleration (α) of the cylinder.

Figure 1

Answer
𝜏 = 𝐹 × 𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 20 × 0.35 cos(40°) = 5.362 𝑁. 𝑚 (𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒)
∵ 𝜏 = 𝐽𝛼
𝜏 5.362
∴𝛼= = = 0.893 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 2

Problem 5
A transformer core with an effective mean path length of 10 in has a 300-turn coil wrapped around one leg.
Its cross-sectional area is 0.25 in2, and its magnetization curve is shown in Figure 2. If current of 0.25 A is
flowing in the coil, calculate the total flux in the core and the flux density.
Answer
𝑙𝑐 = 10 𝑖𝑛 = 10 × 2.54 × 10−2 = 0.254 𝑚
𝐴𝑐 = 0.25 𝑖𝑛2 = 0.25 × 2.542 × 10−4 = 1.6129 × 10−4 𝑚2
ℱ 𝑁𝑖 300 × 0.25
𝐻= = = = 295.28 𝐴. 𝑇/𝑚
𝑙𝑐 𝑙𝑐 0.254
𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑣𝑒 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑓𝑖𝑔𝑢𝑟𝑒 2 → 𝐵 = 1.27 𝑇
𝜙 = 𝐵𝐴𝑐 = 1.27 × 1.6129 × 10−4 = 2 × 10−4 𝑊𝑏

Problem 6
A square magnetic core has a mean path length of 55 cm and a cross sectional area of 150 cm2. A 200 turn
coil of wire is wrapped around one leg of the core. The core is made of a material having the magnetization
curve shown in Figure 2. Calculate:
a) The flux established in the core if the current in the coil is 0.4 A.
b) The core's relative permeability.
c) The reluctance of the core.
Answer
ℱ 𝑁𝑖 200 × 0.4
𝐻= = = = 145.45 𝐴. 𝑇/𝑚
𝑙𝑐 𝑙𝑐 0.55
𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑣𝑒 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑓𝑖𝑔𝑢𝑟𝑒 2 → 𝐵 = 0.9 𝑇
𝜙 = 𝐵𝐴𝑐 = 0.9 × 150 × 10−4 = 0.0135 𝑊𝑏
𝐵 0.9
∵ 𝐵 = 𝜇𝐻 ∴ 𝜇 = = = 6.1875 × 10−3 𝐻/𝑚
𝐻 145.45
𝜇 6.1875 × 10−3
∵ 𝜇 = 𝜇𝑟 𝜇𝑜 ∴ 𝜇𝑟 = = = 4923.86
𝜇𝑜 4𝜋 × 10−7
𝑙𝑐 0.55
ℛ= = = 5925.93 𝐴. 𝑇/𝑊𝑏
𝜇𝐴𝑐 6.1875 × 10−3 × 150 × 10−4

wound around this toroid
Answer
ℱ 𝑁𝑖 10 × 2
𝐻= = = = 100 𝐴. 𝑇/𝑚
𝑙𝑐 𝑙𝑐 0.2
𝐵 = 𝜇𝐻 = 𝜇𝑟 𝜇𝑜 𝐻 = 6700 × 4𝜋 × 10−7 × 100 = 0.842 𝑇
