P1 新题

1. Birthday

1) What do you usually do on your birthday?

There’s nothing special about my birthday. Just like everybody else, it's usually a
family dinner if it's a weekday, followed up by a party with friends on the weekend.
My parents will also prepare me a bowl of noodles, which represents longevity and
health in traditional Chinese culture.

2) What did you do on your birthday when you were young?

Well, when I was young, I didn’t have many choices, because everything was decided
and done by my parents at that time. Basically, I’d just put on some fancy clothes and
have a lot of fun with my family members and some friends that I’d invite to join.

3) Do you think it is important for you to celebrate your birthday?

I think so, and celebrating my birthday has become even more important to me, as
I’ve gotten older. It’s a chance for me to reflect on myself and make changes in the
coming year. Personally, I express my gratitude to others who have helped me along
the way, and show respect for life. Besides, it’s also a great opportunity to bond with
people.

4) Which birthdays do you think it’s most important to celebrate in China?

For Chinese people, the birthdays of children and the elderly are the most important.
According to Chinese tradition, birthdays aren't much of a big deal unless you are
turning a certain age. Generally, the most important birthdays for Chinese people are
the first, the eighteenth, the sixtieth, and then each decade thereafter.

2. Writing

1) Do you write a lot?

Yes. I write almost every day. I write to-do lists, emails, work reports, as well as
journals, blogs, essays, book reviews, and poems. I think there are many benefits of
writing. It helps me clear my mind. When I’ve got many conflicting thoughts
impeding my ability to think clearly, I’ll put them down on paper. Without these
thoughts distracting me in my head, it’s easier to focus.

2) What do you like to write? Why?

I like to write book reviews. Whenever I finish reading a book, be it fiction or non-
fiction, I’ll write a review about it. One of the benefits of writing a book review is

2
to help me retain what I’ve read as I always need to re-read some parts of the book in
order to write it. I often share them on several social media platforms. It’s quite
rewarding to see that what I’ve written has inspired others.

3) Do you think that what you write changes over time?

Yes. I think so. When I look back on what I wrote several years ago, I often find it
childish. After all, all things change. I guess as we age, what we think about life and
people and social issues will change as well because we’ll become more sophisticated
and more knowledgeable. So things we write will definitely change accordingly.

4) Do you prefer typing or writing by hand?

I think it depends on what I’m doing. For most things, especially when I’m writing
emails or taking notes down, I always prefer typing, because I get to use both of my
hands and it improves my efficiency significantly. In other cases, I still like writing by
hand for writing in my diary and listing my ideas down because it makes it more
personal.

3. Weather

1) What's the weather like where you live?

My hometown has pretty consistent weather. It’s usually warm in the summer and
cold in the winter. Sometimes there can be dry spells, but we get a normal amount of
rain and snow. I like that we go through all the seasons. It’s nice to have a change
every once in a while.

2) Do you prefer hot or cold weather?

I think I prefer cold weather. This is because I get so uneasy when I sweat. It makes
me feel so uncomfortable and my skin starts irritating me. In this situation, I can only
feel better after a cold shower at home. Moreover, in cold weather, I can wear my
favorite cardigans as well as get a variety of vegetables to eat.

3) Do you prefer dry or wet weather?

Like all good answers, it depends. If I’m staying inside, I actually prefer it to rain. I
love the sound of rain hitting the roof, it’s quite relaxing and makes me feel at home.
On the contrary, if I’m going out, I’d rather have dry weather. It’s warm and I don’t
have to worry about taking an umbrella.

4) Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast? When/How often?
I check the weather forecast at least twice a day, before I go to bed and before I go
outside. I didn’t get in the habit until I went to college because that’s when I had to
learn to take care of myself. Since my parents and I are in different cities, they can’t
pick me up if it suddenly rains and I don’t have an umbrella with me.

3
5) What do you think have been the effects of climate change in recent years?
In recent years, I do have a feeling that people’s lives are being less affected by
climate change with developing technology. However, I’ve learned that the increasing
temperatures are changing our world drastically. For example, we consume much
more energy to keep cool and we are confronted with grain reduction which in turn
causes inflation.

6) Would you like to visit other cities/countries that have different climates from
where you live?
Yes, definitely. I live in a city where it’s scorching hot in summer and freezing cold in
winter, while spring and autumn only last for several weeks. Hence, I always like to
visit places where spring stays, such as Kunming or Dali. I like to spend my time
meaninglessly in a house with a garden full of blossoming plants, chatting and
napping, that’s my dream life.

4. Snacks

1) What snacks do you like to eat?

There are many kinds of snacks that I love. Nuts and cereals are my favorites. I just
can’t say no to pistachios, cashews, walnuts, and things like that. So sometimes I
choose a big bag of mixed nuts. I also enjoy having cereal with some yogurt, like two
or maybe three times a week.

2) Did you often eat snacks when you were young?

Yes, because no one can resist the temptation of tasty food, especially potato chips
and lovely sweets. I can still remember the flavor of a kind of sweet that tasted
extremely sour, just like preserved plums. Back when I was a child, I was totally
obsessed with it.

3) When do you usually eat snacks nowadays?

In most cases, I eat some nuts before I go to the gym because it’s said that almonds
are good for recovering and building muscle. I also eat some dark chocolate when I
don’t have time to eat a meal. It puts my mind at ease and I really love its bitterness.

4) Do you think it is healthy for you to eat snacks?

Well to my knowledge, most snacks are over-processed, so it’s definitely not so
healthy for me to eat a lot of them or eat that kind of food frequently. I tend to have
some in my spare time, just in moderation. After all, snacks taste good and they can
put me in a good mood.

4
5. Names

1) Does your name have any special meaning?

My name is very special to me as it is to my parents. The first character of my name
comes from the name of a river, which is quite close to the location where I was born.
I believe my parents wanted me to be as free as a river. The second character means
beautiful because they hoped that I could grow up to be an elegant lady.

2) How would you choose names for your children?

Some people may ask an expert who is a professional at choosing names to give a
name to their child, while some may just open a dictionary and seek the characters
that are either beautifully pronounced or have special meanings. As for me, I’d name
my children after excellent qualities that I admire.

3) Are there any differences between how Chinese people name their children now and
in the past?
Yes. In the past, the second character of a Chinese person’s name was usually fixed,
and was the same as their siblings, just to show their seniority in their family. In
recent years though, parents just tend to pick whichever character they want without
limitation, as long as it expresses their good wishes for their child.

4) Does anyone in your family have the same name as you?

As a matter of fact, it’s almost impossible to find a person who has the same name as
his or her relatives in a Chinese family. Unlike the culture in western countries, where
naming a child with the same name as a grandparent may be a way to show respect
and love, Chinese people try their best to avoid this.

5) Are there any names that are more popular than others in China?
Yes, I think so. I read a roster of students enrolled in a kindergarten this year on the
internet and found there were like 5 Zixuans and 6 Zihans. It must be hard work to
distinguish them from one another for the teachers. I guess how parents give names to
their kids is influenced by the popular culture or big events of the era, so trending
names vary from different generations.

6. Puzzles

1) Did you do puzzles in your childhood?

Yes, definitely. If my memory serves me right, when I was in primary school, our
English teacher played a lot of crossword puzzles in class with us. It was an
interesting form of memorizing new words, and I found this game a very useful
source for improving and expanding my English vocabulary.

2) When do you do puzzles, during a trip or when you feel bored?

5
Actually, I fill out a crossword or a Sudoku grid when I’m alone at home because
they’re a fun and interesting way to keep me busy for hours and keep my brain
running. Also, I feel like when I’m trying to complete a puzzle, time seems to fade
away. I’m tired but I barely notice because the puzzles fully immerse and absorb me.

3) Do you like doing word puzzles or number puzzles? Which is more difficult for you?
I prefer word puzzles because I have some tricks for playing these types of games so
it’s usually less challenging for me compared with number puzzles. For example, I
look for common prefixes and suffixes of a word and this really narrows down my
choices, and allows me to successfully solve more word puzzles.

4) Do you think it is good for old people to do puzzles?

Personally, I definitely agree that playing puzzles presents many benefits for the
elderly. Technically speaking, puzzles are designed to train and sharpen the brain,
which helps to delay the brain’s aging process. Some of them, like jigsaw puzzles, are
good for hand to eye coordination, which is beneficial for the aged.

7. Social media

1) Do you or your friends like using social media?

I absolutely love social media. Admittedly, it has its problems to some extent, but in
my case, the good outweighs the bad. I think the most interesting part of social media
is the sharing of ideas and opinions. By that I mean we can stay in touch with our
friends and stay up-to-date with news and current events by using it.

2) Do you think you or your friends use social media too often?
Yes, for sure. Spending time on social media has become almost a way of life for
most adults. My friends and I stay constantly connected through it. Every day, we go
through the same routine: scrolling through our Facebook feed, videos of lovely pets
and funny dances, skimming post after post for hours. It’s like an addiction.

3) Would you like to work in social media? Why or why not?

I’d really like to develop my career in social media because nowadays it’s one of the
most rewarding professions. Social media marketing, advertising and management are
booming and becoming the backbone for a lot of brands. Having the opportunity to be
creative at work is another huge attraction for me. I believe everyone is provided with
a chance to share unique thoughts in this industry.

4) What's the most popular social media app in China? Why?

According to a survey on digital usage, WeChat is the most popular and the leading
social media network in China. There are several reasons for the success of WeChat.
Firstly, it’s the simplest and most practical communication tool. Secondly, it has many

6
other functions such as paying bills, ordering food to be delivered, and calling cabs.
So gradually, WeChat has become a necessary part of our life.

8. Geography

1) Do you like geography?

Yes, I’m fascinated by geography. I remember there were so many beautiful pictures
in the books when I was in geography class, and I had the opportunity to appreciate
the unique features and landscapes around the world. I was able to learn a lot of
geography-related information, such as landforms, weather, and so on, which is very
useful.

2) Have you ever studied geography at school?

Yes, I did take geography in school. Our geography class was only an introductory
course though, and we didn’t learn a lot. Our teachers taught us about rock formations
as well as the causes and characteristics of various climates. We also learned about
earthquakes and floods, and the importance of environmental protection.

3) Are you good at reading a map?

I'm terrible at reading maps. My grandparents were excellent at it. I think, because we
are increasingly using electronic devices with navigation functions, most young
people have weaker map reading skills nowadays. However, because they didn't have
any electronic devices when my grandparents were younger, they had to rely on maps
to get around and, as a result, almost everyone in their generation can read maps.

4) Would you visit a country because of its geographical location?

Yes, I’d definitely travel to a country because of its geographical location. I’m
familiar with a number of countries that are geographically distinct. Turkey, for
example, straddles both Europe and Asia. Turkey has many different customs, cultures,
and cuisines due to its unique geographical position. I believe that visiting such a
country allows one to experience the diversity of cultures, which is very interesting.

9. Transportation

1) What kind of public transportation do you usually take?

Normally, I take the subway because the subway in my city can take me almost
anywhere I want to go. Not only that, but the subway fare is very low, so it will not be
a financial burden for me. I dislike cycling because my bike is always too slow. I also
dislike taking the ferry or bus because they are never on time.

2) When do you usually take public transportation, in your everyday life, or when you
7
are travelling?
In my daily life, I rely heavily on public transportation. However, when I travel, I
either drive myself or I go with a family member or friend who drives. During normal
weekdays, I use public transportation because there is a subway station right near my
home and the subway line connects my home and school directly. This is why I find
the subway to be a very convenient mode of transportation.

3) Do most people prefer public transportation in your country?

Most people, I believe, prefer to take public transportation. Because there are a large
number of permanent residents in Chinese cities, particularly the one where I live.
The majority of them have to travel to work. If everyone chose to drive, traffic would
become extremely congested. As a result, everyone still takes the bus. At the same
time, public transportation, particularly the subway, is free of congestion, ensuring
that commuters arrive at work on time.

4) Did you take public transportation when you were a child?

When I was younger, I used to use public transport, but it was mostly bus back then.
This is because other public transport options, such as the subway, didn’t exist at that
time, and the public transportation system was not as developed as today. As a result,
we frequently chose the bus as one of the primary modes of transportation. The bus
fare was also very low at that time compared with today.

5) Do you think more people will take public transportation in future?

I think so. There are several reasons why. First of all, taking mass transit is cleaner
than owning a private vehicle as people shift their attitudes towards climate change
this will become more important. Besides, transportation systems expand and upgrade
as the population size increases. It’s expected people will come to realize that car
ownership is not the only, or even the best way of traveling in a city, as using public
transportation is becoming more cost-efficient all the time.

10. Housework and cooking

1) Do you cook or help your family cook at home?

Yes, I prepare my own meals at home. I cook three to four days a week. I usually go
to a nearby supermarket to buy fresh vegetables and meat, then cook at home using
online cooking videos to help me. I believe that cooking at home not only keeps me
healthy because I know what ingredients I’m using but also teaches me a valuable
skill.

2) Do you think your home is clean and tidy?

Yes, of course. I like my stuff to be organized and orderly, and I’ve purchased many
boxes and cabinets to store my shoes and clothes in so I can find them right away
when I need them. Besides, my mom has some sort of compulsion to put stuff in a
8
fixed place and requires family members to return items to where they belong after
using them. So I guess yes, I do have a clean and tidy home.

3) Did you do any household chores when you were young?

When I was a kid, I didn't do have to do much housework. This is because we, as a
family, did the majority of the housework together. Because I have a large family,
everyone can pitch in, so none of us needed to do a lot of chores. However, I did
sometimes have to do more on special occasions, especially around Chinese New Year.

4) Do you have breakfast at home every day?

No, I don't eat breakfast every day at home. In fact, most of the time, I don't eat
breakfast at home. This is because my house is a long distance from school, and the
journey is often lengthy, so I have to leave early. But, because I need to sleep, I
usually buy breakfast on the way to school and eat it on the commute.

5) Do you want to learn how to cook well?

Yes, I enjoy learning how to prepare a tasty meal. Cooking is both an important skill
and a fun hobby in my opinion. Cooking can be used to pass the time for people who
are good at it. Cooking delicious dishes not only fills your stomach but also gives you
a sense of accomplishment.

11. Singing

1) Do you like singing? Why or why not?

I enjoy singing a lot. Singing is actually one of my hobbies. This is primarily due to
the fact that singing allows me to unwind. When I'm feeling down, singing a soothing
and quiet song helps to lift my spirits, while singing an upbeat song gives me instant
energy.

2) Have you ever learnt how to sing?

I've never taken formal singing lessons. In fact, all I do is sing along with my favorite
singer. I know there are a lot of singing classes available now, but singing is a very
refreshing feeling for me, so I can sing whatever I want, and I have no interest in
taking some professional training. Therefore, I usually just look for singers I like,
download their songs, and sing along.

3) Who would you like to sing for?

I'd like to sing a song for my mother because she enjoys music. I’ve been influenced
by her since I was a child, and so I’ve always enjoyed music and singing too. I believe
she’s responsible for a large part of my love of singing, and not only that, but my
voice is quite good thanks to her too. As a result, I'd like to sing to her to express my
gratitude for providing me with such a fun skill.

9
4) Do you think singing can bring happiness to people?
Yes, I believe that singing makes people happy. Indeed, music is a communicable art.
Singing can make singers feel the beauty of the music, and the fact that they can sing
good songs can make people feel proud and satisfied. For those who listen, singing
can immerse them in a variety of different emotions and can make them feel different
types of happiness.

12. Technology

1) What do you often use, computers or cellphones?

My mobile is what I use most. In fact, I feel like I'm glued to my phone 24 hours a day.
In the morning, it serves as an alarm clock to wake me up on time. After that, it
becomes my primary tool for reading news. At work and at school, mobiles can be
used to communicate with colleagues and classmates. Furthermore, they have
functions such as navigation, payment, entertainment, and so on.

2) What electronic devices have you bought lately?

My most recent purchase is a tablet. A tablet is a very useful electronic device in my
opinion. Because it can be used as a portable entertainment system, I can watch a
movie or read an e-book from my bed. At the same time, tablets have multiple uses.
For example, with the addition of a keyboard, they can be used as a computer and for
office work.

3) Is there any electronic device you want to buy?

I'm planning to purchase a go-pro, which I'm saving for. Because I spend a lot of my
free time traveling, I could record my mood and journey if I had one. My priceless
moments could also be captured. I also enjoy sports a lot, and you can record yourself
while participating in extreme sports if you have a go-pro, which is quite a cool
feature.

4) Is technology important in your life?

I believe that technology is extremely important in everyday life. Our lives are
inextricably linked to various technological products. For example, electronic
products such as tablet computers, PCs, stereos, and so on are the result of
technological innovation. Our lives would be very boring if these products didn’t exist.
Also, life would be extremely inconvenient without technology.

5) Is there any technology you don't like?

To be honest, I hate facial recognition software. Nowadays, it’s been applied to
various aspects of our lives including paying the bills, opening doors, etc. But I’m
very much afraid that those companies who are good at recognizing our faces have
paid little attention to protecting the data, which will cause a lot of trouble someday.
So whenever I see a pop-up page on one of my electronic devices asking for facial
10
recognition permission, I always click “reject”.

6) What do you think are the trends in technology today compared to when you were
young?
I’m so glad that what we dreamed of when we were little has come true today. I can
still remember that I once wrote in my homework that everyone will have a handheld
computer in the future, but I had no idea that smartphones would come along and be
such an integral part of our lives today.

13. Morning time

1) Do you like getting up early in the morning?

I enjoy getting up early. I believe that only by getting up early will I be able to avoid
wasting time. If I don't get up until ten a.m., I only have two hours before lunch. This
is not very efficient in my opinion. At the same time, getting up early often makes me
feel more awake, and can help me complete more difficult tasks during the day.

2) What do you usually do in the morning?

In the morning, I usually make myself a cup of coffee after washing up. Then I eat
breakfast while listening to a podcast. During breakfast, I enjoy eating while reading
the news. After that, I go to work. When I arrive, I specifically look at what needs to
be done and plan my day. Depending on the importance and urgency of the task, I
begin to complete my work one task at a time.

3) What did you do in the morning when you were little? Why?
I used to go do some exercise in the morning when I was a kid. This was primarily
due to living with my grandparents when I was little. They went for morning exercise
so I had to too. We'd go for a walk in the park and exercise after breakfast. My
grandparents believed it would keep them healthy while also making me healthier and
stronger. I didn't have to go to school or work at the time, so I had plenty of time to
work out with them.

4) Are there any differences between what you do in the morning now and what you
did in the past?
I believe there is a significant difference between what I do in the morning nowadays,
and what I did previously. This is primarily due to the fact that I need to get to work
on time, and the only free time I can arrange is an hour or two before work. But
because I didn't have to go to school or work as a child, I had complete freedom to
organize my life how I wanted and so could have a lazy morning whenever I wanted.

5) Do you spend your mornings doing the same things on both weekends and
weekdays? Why or why not?
Nope. On weekdays, I always quickly wash and get dressed, then rush to the
workplace because I have to be in my chair before 8:00AM. There’s not much time
11
for anything else except to get myself ready for work. As for the mornings of
weekends, they are meant to be wasted on lying in, our bodies need that extra sleep I
reckon.

1. 运动场所
Describe a popular place for sports (e.g. a stadium)
You should say:
Where it is
When you went there
What you did there
And explain how you felt about this place

I’d like to talk about the Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium. It is located in
Hongkou District, Shanghai, northeast of the city centre. It is extraordinary on many
levels (在许多方面上). It is the first professional football stadium in China, and it has
a huge capacity that can accommodate ( 可 容 纳 ) up to 30,000 people. Lots of
important sports events have been held here.

Five years ago, I went to the Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium to watch a football
match. At that time, there was no pandemic and people didn’t have to maintain social
distancing (保持社交距离) and wear masks (戴口罩). The stadium was a bustling sea
of people (人山人海) .

All the viewers were enthusiastic. They shouted, sang songs and even waved
their scarves. Everyone was in full cry (呐喊助威) for their team. Enthusiasm in the
stadium was contagious (有感染力的). Affected by other passionate fans, I liberated
myself and started cheering for my team and waving the team flag in my hand.

After such a long time, my memory of the Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium is
still very vivid. It was a place where I got to observe people’s passion for something
they really love. Every time I think about this experience, I feel so thrilled.

Part 3

(1) Do young people like to do sports?

It is reported that the number of young people who do sports regularly has declined

14
sharply. It’s true to life. I think part of the reason might be an overwhelming work life.
Young people are too busy to squeeze in time to do sports. What’s more, electronic
products are widely used among the young generation who would rather spend time
online than playing outside. But after all, health is more important than anything else,
I would like to call on young people to do sports more often.

(2) What are the benefits of sports for children?

As we all know, sports are beneficial, especially to children. The advantages are
mainly as follows. First, sports enable children to go outside to enjoy the sunshine and
fresh air which plays an important role in stimulating growth hormones. Second,
doing sports requires teamwork which provides children with chances to make friends
and get along with peers. It’svital in developing good habits in children’s future life.
Last but not least, children can learn important lessons such as being confident and
brave from doing sports.

(3) Is it necessary to build public sports spaces?

I think it’s undoubtedly necessary to build public sports spaces because it’s a great
reminder for people about the importance of doing sports. In China, the government
has made a policy to build public sports areas in all cities. There are several reasons
for that. Firstly, people need these places to do sports like playing tennis, badminton
and so forth. Secondly, public places are available to everyone so that people are
encouraged to take part in outdoor activities.

(4) What do you think of companies donating sports venues for poor children?
I appreciate and show great respect for those companies that donate sports venues for
disadvantaged children. I think it is a good way for companies to shoulder social
responsibilities and more importantly, the children benefit a lot. Those sports venues
have made up for the schools’ lack of sports facilities in poor areas. Children could
have more options when choosing activities. I think the whole society should pay
attention to the limits of sports that disadvantaged children are faced with.

2. 收钱
Describe a time when you received money as a gift

In Chinese culture, giving “hongbao” red envelopes with cash is kind of a

distinguished custom(特别的习俗) compared with western cultures, especially among
family members of different generations. In general, grandparents prefer to show their
care and love by giving red envelopes to grandchildren rather than buy potentially
undesired gifts. The situation is the same for me.

I am a big fan of Taylor swift, and everyone but the dog in the family knows it. After
the college entrance exam, my grandma gave me a red envelope with 2000 RMB in it,
telling me to buy a ticket for “Tylor” something’s gig( 演唱会) and have some
relaxing moments after going through such exhausting and struggling days on my way
to my dream school. (She never knew how to correctly pronounce Taylor’s name.) I
burst into tears right away when she said it. I had no idea where she got the news from,
all I found out was how deeply she loved me and how hard she tried to comprehend
what I am interested in.

I received the envelope thankfully and went to the concert with my friend Lily. I took
a lot of videos of the show and sent them to my grandma since she could not come in
person. The concert was tremendous and there really is a great sense of camaraderie
(友爱). I still remember the light-up wristbands that synced to(和……同步) the
music, I had a great time there.

Part 3

(1) Why do people rarely use cash now?

It has become common practice that people rarely use cash now, most people use
mobile phones to pay the bills instead. I think there are several reasons for that. First
of all, smart payments are convenient because we don’t need to ask for change.
Secondly, it’s easier to keep a record of payments so that people could understand
their expenses better. At last, due to the above reasons, it’s quite time-saving to pay
with smartphones.

(2) When do children begin to comprehend the value of money?

Well, I think there is no accurate answer to this question. As far as I’m concerned,
children might be able to comprehend the value of money from as early as five years
old. Take my nephew as an example, although he is only five, he asked his parents to
take care of his lucky money and he was going to buy himself a cool helicopter model
because he estimated that he could afford it, we couldn’t help feeling amused. So, I
think it’s important to help children comprehend the value of money based on their
needs.

16
(3) Should parents reward children with money?
Actually, I don’t think it's a good idea to reward children with money. Here are two
points to support my opinion. For one thing, rewarding children with money conveys
a kind of incorrect value to children. Gradually, children might consider money as
something that outweighs other things. For another, the reward is at their disposal,
which could make it hard for parents to know how they spend it. You know, many
children are spending money on electronic games which are harmful for them. So, I
think rewards should be appropriate and do good to children.

(4) Is it good and necessary to teach children to save money?

Of course, I believe it’s necessary for both teachers and parents to teach children to
save money. As I grow up, I find myself that I have benefited a lot from good money
savings habits , for example, I rarely use a credit card which might not be paid on
time and impact my credit score . So, children should learn to save money from an
early age so that they have the correct knowledge about money.

3. 认识的不同文化的人
Describe a person you know who is from a different culture

Who he/she is
Where he/she is from

When I just started college life, I found that English was essential for my studies. I
was required to read a large amount of English literature which turned out to be a
tough task for a beginner at academic research.

To get myself out of this very (强调)situation, I decided to join the English society
organized by our school, hoping it would help. I got to know international students
from various countries and I benefitted a lot from talking with them and having fun
together.

Among those interesting guys, the one I was most impressed with was an Indian
student majoring in Chinese literature. He’s called Raj and has been in China for
17
around 4 years. Fascinated by ( 着迷于) Chinese culture, we always kept up a
continuous chatter, skipping from one subject to the next over a cup of tea. Sometimes,
I felt he knew more about our country's culture than I did. To be honest, I felt
ashamed (觉得无地自容) when he paused to ask if I know how many years the Tang
dynasty lasted. Well, he quickly found that he was embarassing me (让……尴尬) and
moved to the next topic. Though his kind smile stuck in my memory(留下深刻的印
象).

Ironically, after almost six months together, my English did not improve much, but I
did learn more about Chinese culture.

Part 3

(1) Where and how can we get to know people from different cultures better?
In China, decades ago, if you wanted to know someone from a different culture better,
you would have to go to a large city like Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. But with
rapid globalization, more and more foreigners have settled down in almost every city
in China, so it’s easy to get to know people from foreign cultures now. I think the best
place would be a campus where foreign students and teachers are learning and
working. By attending a class, you could make a friend and get their we-chat for
further conversation.

(2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of cultural diversity?

In terms of cultural diversity, I would like to say the advantages first. We all know
cultural diversity makes it possible for people from different backgrounds to become
friends or even family, so cultural diversity brings the world closer and provides
people with a more colorful life. But due to people from different cultures having
different values and beliefs, there are often disagreements concerning a certain issue,
which may cause some uncertainty and instability within a family and even a country.
So, it’s important to know how to make use of cultural diversity.

(3) How can traditional cultures and other cultures coexist?

In my opinion, multiculturalism is possible. Some European countries are all vivid
examples of this assumption. On the whole, native European people are quite friendly
with immigrants. I believe this actually has a lot to do with the level of education and
morality. If local citizens could live in harmony with each other, it’s like the rich
won’t look down upon the poor, the lucky ones won’t laugh at those who have been
unlucky with fate, so they might be more agreeable when it comes to the so-called
outsiders. Therefore, I suppose the traditional culture can coexist well with other
cultures. Though, this could be a slow process.

(4) Which traditions are disappearing?

With the rapid development of modern industry, many traditions are dying out. For
example, in China, temple fair where people gather to enjoy delicious food, buy fancy
crafts, and so forth is disappearing now. There are also such examples in other
18
cultures. In my opinion, traditions are the great legacy left by our old ancestors, they
recorded history, so we should keep performing and practicing those traditions so that
they could be passed down from generation to generation. But there is a small part of
traditions that need to be replaced, for example burning paper for the dead.

I’d like to talk about the argument between me and my classmate Ken. Both of us
majored in Translation and Interpretation (口译), and we had a difference in opinion
(意见分歧) over whether artificial intelligence (AI) would completely replace human
translators.

It was a month ago when we were in translation class. Knowing that AI translation has
become quite advanced nowadays, I was anxious that machine translation may take
over human translators' jobs, and therefore we would be unemployed after graduation.
My classmate Ken brushed aside (对……不屑一顾) my opinion. He contended that
computers can never be as good as human translators when it came to subtle nuance
(细微差别) of words.

Neither of us were willing to make concessions (做出让步), and we almost turned

our arguments into a fight. At last, our teacher recognized there was something wrong
in class, and she asked us to calm down.

Now that I think about it, it was totally unnecessary to argue with Ken and damage
our friendship. We should have come up with a better idea to dissolve our argument
(解决争端). All in all, fighting with other people wouldn't help me get a better job.
High-end translation, such as diplomatic translation and legal translation, would
19
always need human translators. What I need to do is to improve my translation skill
and become a language expert.

Part 3

(1) What do you do if you disagree with someone?

In my opinion, it ’ s about a kind of interpersonal communication skill. If I had a
disagreement with others, the first step is to listen to them carefully to make sure that
I fully understand their side. Next, I would say that I partly agree with them in terms
of that topic to make them interested d in what I am going to say next. Then I would
put forward my point with several pieces of evidence. I think it’s quite normal to have
disagreements with others while efficient communication plays a key role in reaching
conclusions.

(2) How can we stop an argument from escalating into a fight?

I think there are several key point in avoiding an argument from escalating into a fight.
First, it ’ s important for both sides to calm down. Someone needs to state the
importance of controlling their temper. Second, full understanding is required because
misunderstandings are likely to create arguments. So, both sides must listen very
carefully and patiently to what the other is talking about. All in all, we should all learn
some communication skills to make the dialogue smooth and efficient.

(3) Who do you think should teach children to respect their teachers?
Of course, parents should teach their children to respect teachers. It is always said that
parents are their children’s first and longest-lasting teachers. Children need their
parents’ guidance as well as assistance in learning the value of respecting themselves
and others. It is important for parents to remember that children are likely to do what
their parents do. If parents set a good example for their children and tell them the
importance of respecting teachers, then children would imitate their parent's behavior
as well as listen to their words. By doing so, it might be easier for kids to learn how to
be polite and well-behaved.

(4) What disagreements do parents and children usually have?

This is a quite common issue all over the world I guess but the disagreements are not
always the same. Taking my country as an example, in China, children have numerous
things to disagree with their parents, including what clothes to wear every day, going
to play with peers or staying at home to play the piano or doing homework, which
school to go to, etc. It sounds troublesome, right? But I can partly understand this,
since in my country, parents focus too much on their children so they always want to
get closely involved in their children’s lives, this is also a way of showing love from
parents.

要归功于在球赛中的配合。

I’d like to talk about how I built team spirit through a football game. It was last year
when I just started working. I didn’t know much about the company at first and I
didn’t know my colleagues well. At that time, I was complacent about (自满于) my
working efficiency and thought there was no need for me to cooperate with others.

However, I soon changed my mind. After a few days, my boss wanted to organize a
friendly football match (足球友谊赛) in our department. I had to get along with other
colleagues. Because I was a member of the school football team at college, I was
appointed (被任命为) the striker.

During the preparation, I often went to the nearest playground with my colleagues
after work. We would practice our football skills there, and sometimes I was in charge
of (负责) organizing it. It was at that time that I started to fit in and became friends
with other team members. Finally, we won the competition. By accomplishing
something big together, I actually learned the greatness of team-working.

I thought this football match was really important. Without this game, I wouldn’t have
been able to change my mindset and cooperate with others. I no longer thought that I
was able to accomplish a task all by myself. Now, thanks to this football match, there
is a great sense of team spirit in our department.

Part 3

(1) What can children learn from parents?

Parents are the first teachers that children learn from, as far as I know, children learn
most habits from their parents. As is reported, nearly seventy percent of people who
smoke said they learn to smoke from their dad or other family members who always

21
smoke. Another important thing that children learn from parents is the way that they
speak. So, it requires parents to pay attention to their behavior because children are
learning all the time.

(2) ) Do you think some children are well-behaved because they are influenced
by their parents?
With regards to this topic, I believe children who are well-behaved mainly learn those
polite manners from their parents because they spend most of the time with their
parents. If parents are very polite to others, children might follow and they will act the
same way. However, there are still exceptions where parents are not even, as polite as
their children. So, schooling is nearly as important as family influence in teaching
children’s behavior.

(3) Is it necessary for adults to learn new things?

As the old proverb goes, you’re never too old to learn. So, I believe it is still necessary
for adults to learn new things. First of all, learning is a kind of ability that needs
constant practice. Secondly, our society is changing day by day, if one refuses to learn
new things, they are likely to fall behind. To fit into society and achieve better results
in their jobs, adults need to keep learning and mastering new skills all the time.

(4) How can people learn new things?

Learning new things can be easy now as the internet has become widespread. Take me
as an example, I keep learning English by using apps and subscribing to newspapers
for intensive reading. The internet has provided people with many options to learn
something new. Besides, people could also choose to take classes after school or after
work. To summarize, , self-teaching and learning from teachers are both easy to
access today, as long as you are willing to learn new things.

Speaking of trendy persons, I would like to share about my colleague Lily. If we had a
poll for the most fashionable teacher in our school, the laurel must be worn on her
head.

No matter whether the temperature is high above 40 °C or low below 0 °C, she always
looks neat and nice when she shows up. Her main claim to fame( 成 名 ) is that she
wore an A-line dress with glittering sparkles at the new year party.

Apart from her unique dress sense, she also impresses people with her sassy swagger
(时髦的气质)when she walks. Her physique was worked on through strenuous hours
at the gym, mostly to improve muscle tone(肌肉张力). In her opinion, a good figure
boosts the whole look.

I once asked her how she came up with so many suitable-for-work yet good-looking
looks, and she said she was learning from Taylor swift. She is a big fan of Taylor and
follows her example(把她视为榜样). Not only is she fond of Taylor's songs, but she
also finds Taylor's dress style quite inspiring.

She is an art teacher and it seems that she did integrate her profession into her hobby.
She told me she felt that dressing fashionably promoted her confidence and she also
grew to have a lot of shared topics with her students. I guess that is why she gained so
much love from them.

Part 3

(1) Do you think online shopping will replace in-store shopping in the future? Why
or why not?
I admit that online shopping is widespread now, I am not an exception, I buy many
things online because it’s time-saving and, what’s more, online stores have more
products to choose from. But in my opinion, I don’t think in-store shopping will be
completely replaced by online shopping. Because in-store shopping enables people to
see and feel the product closely so that people can get what they really want.
Especially when people buy expensive things or large objects, in-store shopping is the
better choice because people could identify any problems on the spot.

(2) Why is fashion very important to some people?

The reasons are mainly as follows, first of all, fashion, to some extent, represents
one’s attitude to life. For young ladies, fashionable outfits make them more confident
in themselves, which helps them perform better in work and interpersonal
interactions . Second, fashion attracts people by conveying the value of pursuing what

23
you want. Young people need to chase after trends to show that they are up-to-date.
But as they grow older, fashion might be less important to most people because
people pay more attention to the spiritual world and learn that fashion passes while
style remains.

(3) Are older people as fashionable as young people? Why or why not?
In most cases, older people are less fashionable than the young, I think the reasons for
that vary from person to person. Firstly, older people desire a simple way of life, so
they prefer simple clothing. Secondly, older people have developed their own
opinions about life so they care less about what others are saying about their
appearance. However, there are still some old people wearing fashionable clothes and
using new smartphones. I think it just depends on personal habits.

(4) Are women more fashionable than men? Why or why not?
Yes, I think women are more fashionable than men. There are two reasons for it.
Generally speaking, I believe that women tend to spend more time and money on
studying fashion than men. Women care more about their appearance, which makes
them more willing to explore new fashion trends that may be suitable for them. In
addition, women love fashion more because they need something to talk about with
their friends. Fashion is a great topic for women on social occasions. If someone
doesn’t know how to get along with another woman, she can compliment her outfit or
make-up. It can easily break the ice. Therefore, women force themselves to know
something about fashion even if they’re not interested in it.

Describe a photo you took that you are proud of

24
I'd like to talk about a photo I took at a football competition. It was my sophomore
year at college (大二那年). I was a member of the photography club (摄影社). My
favorite thing was to capture enjoyable moments with my camera in my spare time. At
that time, my friend Mike was the captain of the school football team. He invited me
to take some photos of the team in a competition and I agreed.

The competition was a friendly football match ( 友 谊 赛 ) between our school and a
nearby university. It took place at our school’s stadium. During the whole competition,
I became very enthusiastic just like the other players and had taken many pictures.
Among all photos, I loved the one when Mike shot the goal. This decisive goal
arrived against the run of play.

After the friendly match, the photos I took were published in our school newspaper.
There were two pages about this wonderful game. The photo of Mike was borrowed
by the other university to publish in their school papers.

I’m proud of this picture for two reasons. Firstly, I’m able to help my best friend Mike
and memorize his important moments. Secondly, I can play to my strengths (发挥特长 )
and make contributions to others. This is a meaningful experience, and I will keep the
picture of Mike forever to remind me of my passion for photography.

Part 3

(1) Why do some people like to record important things with photos?
In my opinion, it’s because memories are fragile and it’s common that people will
easily forget things that matter to them. And photos will be able to help people
remember those things that have passed away and remind them of the feelings and
emotions at the time. I suppose they are like souvenirs, once people look at them, all
the details of past events and the time they shared with their friend would come to you.
So photos are not just about the event itself, but rather about memorizing the people
we care for.

(2) What can people learn from historical photographs?

I suppose they help us to learn lessons from history. For example, photos about the
Second World War often preserve those atrocities and brutality, which would
somehow remind us not to repeat the tragedy. Apart from that, historical photographs
serve to become great materials for doing research on past events, to better examine
the customs and development of the society at the time. First-hand reference shall
always give us a clear and faithful image of how things were like and what fosters
evolution.

(3) Is taking photos the best way to remember something?

I think writing diaries and journals also serve to play the same role in recording things.
Diaries help to record the most intricate sentiment in our minds, such as our

25
paradoxical feelings toward a specific person. It is probably something we will forget
years later. Besides, memories are haunting. They are constantly changing according
to our state of mind. What we thought at the moment may be completely different
from ten years ago, and diaries will help to record those differences and make
comparisons so we can easily notice the slight difference that take place over the
years.

(4) Which is better, taking photos or keeping a diary?

I would definitely go with keeping a diary. Personally, I believe writing is more
enduring because we are still reading poetry or novels written by people hundreds of
years ago, and that ’ s because it delivers our common experiences, we would
nevertheless relate if we are reading something that creates resonance in our hearts.
So probably when someone shares a photo with someone, it would fail to arouse the
same feelings even if they feel the same way. However, a diary will be able to do that.

8. 发小
Describe a friend from your childhood
You should say:
Who he/she is
Where and how you met each other
What you often did together
And explain what made you like him/her

The topic reminds me of Lily, who was my childhood neighbor and we have been
close friends since my family moved back to the town where my mom grew up.
Having spent our childhood together, we can vividly remember those intriguing
moments with each other that make us roll on the floor(在地上打滚). Even though I
have moved from that small town, those shining memories start to dance in my head
whenever I come back there.

As we grew up to be teenagers, both of us grew to be big fans of Taylor swift as well.

Can’t tell when, we fell for Taylor almost at the same time. We learned to sing all the
songs of Taylor’s in the groove( 流 行 地 ) and memorized the lyrics into a notebook.
Wanting to attend Taylor’s concert desperately, we started to save money for the
tickets. I can still recall those lame(蹩 脚 的 ) but cute tricks to get extra money from
parents, which is the fountain of never-ending joy(快乐源泉).

26
Luckily, we finally made it to go to the gig in Shanghai after the college entrance
exam. On that amazing night, I danced to the songs that we sang thousands of times,
shouted out loud with fans from all over the country, and Lily was crazy just like me.

The concert was epic, but I did think that I could never have had such a gorgeous
night without Lily who stood by my side and shared what I felt.

Part 3

(1) Do you still keep in touch with your friends from childhood? Why or why not?
Some of them, yes. My family moved a lot when I was a child, and I had childhood
friends from different cities. The problem was, mobile phones were not so common
those days, so when I moved out with my parents, I could no longer contact them.
However, thanks to social media, I got in touch with many of my childhood friends
via some social media apps such as WeChat, QQ, TikTok, etc. Now we are all trying
hard to find a chance to meet up in person and are all looking forward to knowing
each other more.

(2) How important is childhood friendship to children?

Friendships benefit children by creating a sense of belonging and security as well as
reducing stress. Child psychologists find early childhood friendships contribute to
children's quality of life and ability to adjust to changes within their environments as
well. Creating friendships develops life skills that will increase your child's wisdom,
confidence, and self-esteem. Children will learn the meaning of true friendship. They
will learn that a good friend will have their best interests at heart and have their back.
Someone who is not your friend will not have these qualities. Therefore, I believe that
it is very important for kids to stay with friends from time to time.

(3) What do you think of communicating via social media?

I think social media has completely changed the way we communicate, and also who
we communicate with. From one perspective, it brings us many advantages as it has
given people the ability to communicate regardless of geography, cultures, and
languages, creating an interconnected community. Social media not only allows you
to hear what people say about you but also enables you to respond to exchange
information. However, on the other side, social media also brings us bad things as it
not only affects our ability to listen and engage with others, but also our ability to
effectively communicate on paper.

( 4 ) Do you think online communication through social media will replace face-
to-face communication?
Even though we spend a lot of our time following people or chatting with them on
social media sites such as WeChat. I do not think such virtual interactions are likely to
take the place of real face-to-face conversations any time soon as there are huge

27
differences between online communication and face-to-face communication. Face-to-
face interactions are predominantly synchronous, meaning they occur naturally. The
listener has an instantaneous receipt and a quick response. However, online
communication can be synchronous with rapid-fire responses, but it can also be
asynchronous. It is a normal scenario for us that you messaged someone and waited
for a couple of hours to get a reply, which is quite inconvenient.

My favorite program is the reality show ( 真 人秀 ) Exploring Chengdu. It is a

cooking-oriented reality show. In each episode, the show will invite a celebrity as the
guest to learn cooking from a chef in different local restaurants in Chengdu.

This program is produced by Chengdu TV station, and it has remained to be the most
popular program in Chengdu for three consecutive years (连续三年). Since almost all
staff members of this show are local people in Chengdu, they know many unique
places to enjoy traditional Chengdu snacks and sweets.

As a native and a foodie (美食爱好者), I often watch Exploring Chengdu by myself

when I get off work (下班). When I was at a family reunion, I would watch this TV
show with my family. By watching this program, I’ve explored so many special
Chengdu cuisines. For example, I remember one time they went to a coffee house
near the Anshun Bridge. One of the specials was spicy ice cream, which was made of
local peppers and chilies. It was very impressive.

28
I love watching this show in my spare time for two reasons. Firstly, I can explore
more food through this program. It’s enjoyable to see those ingredients ( 原 材 料 )
transformed into delicious foods. Secondly, I grow a deeper understanding of my
hometown Chengdu, and was amazed by its food culture.

Part 3

(1) What programs do people like to watch in your country?

There are a variety of programs that are popular in China, such as sports matches,
documentaries, and programs related to cooking and reading have even received high
popularity in our country as they are recreational and meaningful.

(2) Do people in your country like to watch foreign TV programs?

I guess the answer is yes and there are many reasons why people tend to do so. First
of all, it is a way to explore life in foreign land, and this chance is valuable, especially
considering that with the influence of COVID-19, it is unfeasible for people to travel
abroad. As a result, watching foreign TV programs is an ideal way to acquire
knowledge and absorb information about the different histories, traditions and
lifestyles, which can enrich people’s experiences and spice their life up. Additionally,
considering that people are getting more stressed in the fast-paced society, watching
these programs helps them unwind and relax to a large extent.

(3) What's the benefit of letting kids watch animal videos than visiting zoos?
I guess many benefits can be brought by animal videos. In the first place, watching
animal videos is much safer than visiting zoos in person. Given the fact that children
don’t have much experience and awareness of danger, they are prone to attacks from
animals if their behaviors are improper to some extent. What’s more, children are able
to learn about more varieties of animals through the videos, even those only existing
in certain regions. As a result, their interest and curiosity can be better satisfied.

(4) Do teachers play videos in class in your country?

As far as I am concerned, the answer is yes in cities, but it is not handy to play videos
in some deprived areas, given the fact that they don’t have suitable electronic devices
such as a computer with a big screen or access to the Internet. However, playing
videos is adaptable in classes as it is always engaging while showing students some
basic backgrounds of the lessons which i enables students to be more productive in
class. As a result, it has been an integral part of classes in my country.

Describe a movie you watched recently and would like to watch again
You should say:

What type of movie it was
What it was about
Where you watched it
And explain why you would like to watch it again

I’d like to talk about the movie I recently watched, which is called A Tale of Chengdu.
I found A Tale of Chengdu on the Internet because a lot of people spoke highly of this
movie and recommended it to movie fans, so I watched it with my roommates in my
dorm.

It was a documentary ( 纪 录 片 ), which recorded the experiences of six protagonists

( 主 人 公 ), who moved from other cities to Chengdu to live here. Among those six
people, there is a chef who came to Chengdu to study Sichuan cuisine, a novelist who
loved the laid-back (闲散的) lifestyle of Chengdu, and a corporate executive (企业高管 )
who resigned her position and had a break in Chengdu, and so on.

I think A Tale of Chengdu is the best movie I’ve watched in recent years. I like the
way it portrays Chengdu from different perspectives. The six main characters come
from different places, and they are of different ages and occupations, but Chengdu
accepts their difference with openness and inclusiveness (开放包容) like a “Melting
Pot”(大熔炉).

I like this film because it demonstrates the real life of the Chengdu people and it is
very down-to-earth (接地气). As a movie lover, I will watch it again when I have time
because I want to write a review of it and recommend it to more people.

Part 3
(1) Where do people normally watch movies?
People are able to watch movies in many places. In the past, movies were only
available in cinemas, while today, we are able to watch an even wider range of movies
almost everywhere, as long as the network is available considering the advent of
mobile phones, laptops and even family cinemas.

30
(2) What are the differences between watching movies at home and at the cinema?
As far as I am concerned, there are many differences between the experience of
watching movies at home and in a cinema. Compared with cinema, you are less likely
to be bothered at home while enjoying the movie as sometimes it is inevitable for
people to encounter some people with poor manners in public places. However,
watching movies in the cinema offers us the chance to expand our social circle. In the
cinema, people are more likely to make friends from all walks of life when making
comments on the plots together, which is more engaging and recreational.

(3) Are actors and actresses important to movies? Why or why not?
I guess it is important. To begin with, actors or actresses with better acting skills play
decisive roles in the quality of movies. Especially considering that audiences are
willing to be immersed in movies while watching them, it is skillful acting that can
achieve that . Otherwise, the audience may suffer a lot. Secondly, the actors or
actresses with higher popularity are able to attract more audiences, though they can’t
determine the quality of the movie. Especially given that people have put more and
more attention on the behaviors of celebrities today, the involvement of famous actors
or actresses can always bring more profit.

(4) Why are there fewer people going to the cinema to watch movies nowadays?
The reasons are manifold from my point of view. First of all, with the influence of
COVID-19, people are always at home so it is to some extent unfeasible for people to
go to the cinema and enjoy movies. Additionally, more and more resources are
available on the Internet, with the development of a variety of apps s and websites. It
is much easier for people to watch movies on their laptops or even mobile phones.
Most importantly, considering the fact that the living cost is rocketing today and
people tend to save every penny in their pocket, it is more likely for people to watch
movies on the Internet which is cheaper and even sometimes free as the phenomenon
of piracy is pervasive today.

This topic reminds me of happy times I had this summer in my hometown. I would
like to talk about my close friend (亲密好友) Lily's house. When she heard that I
wanted to practice oral English recently, she invited me to her place because the
school's English society was held in her home every Saturday afternoon during the
summer vacation.

I went to her house almost every weekend in August and had a great time . Her home
is a high-rise(高层的) apartment in the center of the city, surrounded by various
decent restaurants. She’s also got a big projector with a giant screen. We usually
ordered delicious take-away food and sat in front of the sofa, chattering away and
watching British movies together as the night closed in(夜幕降临).

Although I stayed until night fell every time, I always felt time flew! Wallowingin( 纵

we were fond of, as well as boys and girls in the English society we had a crush on(暗

Lily was hitting on a boy(和某人调情) for the whole summer, but later I found that
he was seeing some other girl (和……交往)in his class. When I broke the news to

Part 3

(1) What are the differences between buildings in the city and in the countryside?
Cities are overcrowded with people, vehicles and buildings whereas the countryside
has a picturesque setting with greenery, farmlands, hills and forests. Therefore,
buildings in the city are normally tall and crowded, while buildings in the countryside
are normally not very crowded. I will take residence buildings for example. Suburbs
consist mostly of single-family housing far from the city, while urban areas are
primarily multi-family apartment buildings and condos as there are more people and
higher demand for places to live in the cities.

(2) Do you prefer to live in the city or in the countryside?

I prefer to live in a city because I think that life in a city is always more exciting and
more comfortable than living in a country or in a small town. First, in cities there is
usually something to do or somewhere to go. In the city there is better access to
education and it is easier to find a good and interesting job. Moreover, there is a good
selection of cinemas, galleries, theatres, or restaurants, where people can spend their

32
free time. There is always something interesting and it is impossible to be bored. In
conclusion, city life is generally better than village life because of convenience. In the
city, you can get whatever you want quickly. The village life is not bad, however there
is the issue of scarcity.

(3) What safety risks are there in residential buildings in cities?

A high-density area presents a serious threat to the health and safety status of residents.
For example, the outbreak of covid has already made the public aware of the
vulnerability of densely populated areas to contagious diseases. Apart from health
problems, older apartment buildings often lack proper building management and
maintenance, possibly due to fragmented ownership and a lack of resources. Moreover,
natural disasters such as earthquakes, and fire accidents are also huge risks for people
who live in high-rises.

(4) Is it expensive to decorate a house or an apartment in the place where you live?
I think so, yes. If I would like to decorate my apartment, I have to spend money on
buying all the decorations, which I believe would cost me a large amount of money.
Personally, I love to decorate my apartment as this is where I spend most of my time
each day. However, since I am still a student and I am renting my apartment, I am not
willing to buy many decorations for my room as I won’t live here for a long time. I
will definitely move out when I graduate.

12. 塑料废品
Describe a time when you saw a lot of plastic waste (e.g. in a park, on the beach etc.)
You should say:
Where and when you saw the plastic waste
Why there was a lot of plastic waste
What you did after you saw them
And explain what your thoughts were about this

I would like to talk about a gourmet street, Jianshe Street, in my hometown Chengdu,
where I saw a lot of plastic waste. Attending a gourmet street has become a social

33
norm(社交惯例),with people using them as both formal and informal meeting areas.
In Chengdu, Jianshe Street is one of the must-go places that encompasses services for
dining , shopping and amusement. For a huge foodie like me, I mostly go there to glut
myself with delicacies(大快朵颐).

Last weekend, my friends and I decided to have a feast(大吃一顿) in the gourmet

street so as to s relax after some long hard work. The street consists of a number of
vendors(摊贩) at food stalls or service counters. Meals are ordered at one of the
vendors and then carried to a common dining area. It also has shops that sell prepared
meals for consumers to take home and reheat.

Apart from the food we enjoyed, what surprised me was how carelessly people
dropped litter everywhere. Although it is a tourist spot, people do not pay much
attention to its environment. As time went by, the plastic bags, bottles, jars and
packages piled up, forming an unpleasant scene. I called the hotline of the local
administration to report this phenomenon.

Since that day, I haven’t been there anymore, but I do hope that the situation is getting
improved. It is very essential that people raise awareness of(提高对……的意识)
protecting their living environment, as it serves as a reflection of the city’s spirit.

Part 3

(1) Do you think we should use plastic products?

No, I don’t think we should use plastic products. If we continue to use it at the current
rate, ocean plastic will outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050. Sea birds, turtles, seals,
and other marine life are all affected by plastic. They often experience starvation as
their stomachs fill with litter or they become restricted by plastic. Moreover, burned
plastic bags can cause air pollution and respiratory problems. In addition, plastic bags
used as food containers have the potential to interfere with human health because
toxins in plastic bags can go into our food.

(2) How can we reduce our use of plastic?

First, we should try to reduce the use of plastics by using other materials in their place.

For example, we should use bags made from cotton, cloth, or paper. Stainless steel
lunch boxes can be used in place of plastic lunch boxes. Second, we should reuse the
plastic containers which come with jams, pickles, oils and other packed food materials
for storing salt, spices, tea leaves, sugar etc. in the kitchen. Third, I believe that plastic
waste should be recycled. All the plastic waste at home, in the shops and industry
should be collected and sent for recycling to plastic-making factories.

34
(3) What kinds of plastic waste are often seen in your country?

Speaking of the most common plastic waste, I believe it would be cigarette butts. We
can find cigarette butts everywhere in the street, but not many people know that
cigarette butt’s filters contain tiny plastic fibers. These fibers are the most common
type of plastic waste found in the environment. In addition, food wrappers, plastic
bottles, plastic bottle caps, plastic grocery bags, plastic straws, and stirrers are the
next most common items. These kinds of plastic waste can be seen very often in my
country, which I find very sad. There’s still a long way to go to reduce plastic waste.

(4) Why do people like to use plastic products?

Plastics have a range of unique properties: they can be used at a wide range of
temperatures, are chemical- and light-resistant and are very strong and tough, but can
also be easily worked with when melted. Moreover, plastic packaging is lightweight
and can take up less space than alternatives, which means lighter loads for planes and
trucks and lower emissions. In addition, because plastic packaging is so durable,
plastic packaging can be very thin. I believe that’s why people like to use plastic
products.

I’d like to talk about my experience of searching for artificial intelligence (AI)
applications online. It was my freshman year at college (大一那年), and as a student
majoring in computer science, I took a class called Introduction to Artificial
Intelligence. Before the class, the teacher asked us to prepare for our lesson before
class (预习) and search online for some useful information about AI.

Therefore, I went to the school library to search for relevant books and used a
35
computer to look up AI knowledge online. To my surprise, our lives were full of
applications of artificial intelligence, such as intelligent navigation ( 智 能 导 航 ) and
AI-based diagnosis software. AI surely provided us with convenience. I was amazed
by technology’s impact on modern lives.

At last, thanks to my thorough investigation of AI, I actively participated in the class

discussion and raised my hand to answer the teacher's questions. After class, I even
made a presentation about AI applications at the request of the teacher, which was
well-received by everyone in the class. I was so proud of myself that I decided to
further my study in the area of AI. The experience of searching for information
affected my career choice (职业选择).

At first, I searched for AI information because that was my homework. It’s never
occurred to me that this homework would change me so much. I’m very glad I put
effort into (倾注精力做某事) this search.

Part 3

(1) How can people search for information now?

Nowadays, people are able to acquire knowledge and absorb information in various
ways. Apart from traditional methods like reading books, magazines, and newspapers,
people are capable of gaining a wide range of information by listening to the radio,
watching different kinds of TV programs, and even using search engines on the
Internet, which are speedy, handy, and user-friendly. Having greater command of the
Internet gives people an edge in making better use of the information as well.

(2) What information can people get from television?

A variety of information is accessible and available on television. For example, people
are capable of gaining information about geography and biology from a documentary
on BBC; what ‘ s more, it is also a rewarding way for us to watch educational
programs to absorb information beneficial for our studies, such as some different
study methods and strategies; besides, news reports provide us with information about
what is going on currently as well, which is of great significance for people.

(3) Do you think libraries are still important in the digital age?
I suppose the status of libraries is irreplaceable. First of all, libraries offer gathering
places for people with the same common ground. They offer a suitable atmosphere for
bookworms to share their favorite books and exchange their viewpoint on different
books, which is engaging and interesting.Additionally, like museums, libraries always
keep a unique record of the development of the community, considering their
collections of many old books, newspapers, and magazines which are educational and
valuable for research into the culture and history of the region.

(4) Does the development of the Internet have any impact on disadvantaged people?

36
From my perspective, the impact brought by the Internet is significant. First, in the
past, it was easy to notice that disadvantaged people always find themselves lacking
the resources for education, considering their financial status and the limited budget
of the government. However, with the advent of the Internet, the situation has been
reversed to a large extent as a wider range of information and knowledge is available
and accessible to people in need. For example, people who can’t afford the loans for
expensive education are also able to gain doctor or teacher qualifications with the
knowledge acquired on the Internet and earn a living in the city.

Recently, I shared the Chengdu travel tips I wrote with my best friend Cindy. She and
I were chatting the other day ( 几 天 前 ), and she spoke of the fact that she always
stayed at home during the holidays. She thought that was an unhealthy and boring
lifestyle, and she wanted to make a difference ( 做 出 改 变 ). However, she also
complained that most famous scenic spots were crowded and tiring.

In order to save her the trouble (让她避免麻烦), I sent her the travel guide I wrote. It
was written a year ago when I went to Chengdu to spend my summer holiday. I
recommended to her to visit the Anshun Bridge in Chengdu. It not only has beautiful
scenery, but also has ancient traditional architect on the bridge, which is a famous
eating place now.

I told Cindy that you can both enjoy the views and the delicate Chengdu cuisine there.
Besides, since the Anshun Bridge was not the most popular tourist destination ( 旅游胜
地) in Chengdu, it wouldn’t be as crowded as the other ones. At last, Cindy said she
37
would visit Chengdu during the next summer holiday, and she was thankful for me
sharing.

I felt really excited that I was able to help my friend. I hoped that she could find
something interesting during her trip and would be good at discovering wonderful
things in Chengdu.

Part 3

(1) Do you think kids like to share? Why or why not?

I believe that children are willing to share by nature . Because children have the purest
and most innocent minds, they are not as possessive of objects as adults. What matters
to them is the pleasurable experience of playing with their friends, not the ownership
of toys. My little brother, for example, is always generous in sharing his toys with me
or his buddies. He would not say that his toys were only for him to play with. For him,
friendship is more important than toys.

(2) How can parents teach their children to share?

Parents should teach their children to learn to share in a patient manner, rather than
resorting to coercive means such as threats and criticism, which may trigger
rebelliousness and resistance in children. I think parents can first explain to their
children the importance of sharing and explain to them why sharing can bring twice as
much joy, and how sharing brings us closer to our friends. Next, parents can lead by
example and show their children examples of sharing so that they can slowly accept
sharing with others.

(3) What do you think is the benefit of sharing for children?

There are many benefits for children to learn to share. First of all, it can help children
develop a healthy personality and improve their interpersonal skills to live better in
harmony with others and adapt to society. Secondly, it can help children build trust
and make friends with others. In addition, sharing will also bring joy to children. By
playing with friends, children can gain a more valuable experience than playing with
toys by themselves. I think parents should teach their children the meaning and
importance of sharing and guide them to learn to share with others.

(4) Is there anything that parents can do that would persuade children to share with
others?
I think parents generally do guide their kids to share personal items like toys, but
when it comes to the things that parents really persuade their kids to share, I think it
would be the kid’s ideas. Some children are reluctant to share their ideas, and this can
be a struggle for parents. They may tend to close themselves off because they are
introverted or shy, which can be detrimental to their developmental growth. Therefore,
parents must teach their children to share their ideas with others.

I’d like to talk about the Anshun Bridge in Chengdu, which left a deep impression on
me (给我留下深刻印象). The first time I saw this bridge was one year ago. My best
friend Cindy and I had just graduated from high school, and we decided to take a trip
together. Cindy was born and raised in Chengdu, and she invited me to visit her
hometown.

Our first stop was the Anshun Bridge. Its history can be traced back (追溯到) to 1746.
It was located on the Jin River in Anshun District, Chengdu. The whole bridge was
made of black bricks, and it was illuminated ( 照 亮 ; 装 饰 ) by bright spotlights at
night. On the bridge there was a delicate traditional Chinese building, which was a
large restaurant and a famous place to eat in Chengdu.

Cindy and I visited the Anshun Bridge at night. We took a boat alongside the Jin River,
enjoying the cool, crisp breeze in Chengdu. At that time, I saw all the lights on the
bridge lit up. It was so dreamy that I almost thought I was in Wonderland (仙境).

I believe this bridge is one of the most beautiful objects I’ve seen. Firstly, it has a
unique shape. It has the delicacy and sophistication of traditional Chinese buildings.
Secondly, it represents the long history of Chinese culture, which makes me proud of
my motherland.

Part 3

(1) Do you think there are more beautiful things now than in the past? Why or why
39
not?
I think there are more beautiful things now than in the past. First of all, there are many
beautiful things such as virtual scenes on the Internet that were born with the
development of technology, and these things are inseparable from the advancement of
the information age. Secondly, we now have a broader definition of beautiful things
compared to the past. In the past, the definition of beautiful things was often relatively
single and narrow, but we are now increasingly able to appreciate a variety of beauty.

(2) What beautiful scenery spots are there in your country?

When it comes to the beautiful spots of our country, I think all Chinese people have
one place in mind - the Great Wall of China. Located in the northwest of Beijing, the
Great Wall, which is more than 13,000 kilometers long, is a world-famous wonder
and is listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. It is like a giant dragon winding and
coiling between the mountains and hills of northern China. At the same time, it is also
the crystallization of the blood and sweat of ancient Chinese working people and a
symbol of Chinese culture.

(3) Where do you think people usually come into contact with beautiful things?
I think the place where people are often exposed to beautiful things is the park. Parks
are basically available in every city as a place for public events, and the general public
can easily access them to experience its beauty. Moreover, parks are one of the rare
places in cities where people can get in touch with nature. Nature is the embodiment
of beauty; the blue sky, the white clouds, the flowers, the trees, the birds, the insects
and the fish, all of these are beautiful things that nature has given us. It is only in
parks that people can meet these beautiful things in person.

(4) Why do you think people create beautiful things?

I think it is human instinct to appreciate and create beautiful things. The meaning of
life is to feel and create beauty through various life activities. Human beings can bring
various beautiful changes to the world. For example, some people through their hard
work turn deserts into oases, build tall buildings, invent new technologies, propose
new scientific theories, create new works of literature and art, and so on. Seeing that
many new and beautiful things have been added to the world because of their
activities, and that many people and things have changed for the better because of
their activities, one should have a sense of the meaning of life.

小辣椒,非常好看。当辣椒成熟了,她会做有名的成都菜给我们吃,如麻婆豆腐和

I’d like to talk about my mom, who has grown all kinds of chilies and peppers in our
home. When I was a kid, my mom was a big fan of ( 热 爱 ) gardening. She used to
plant plenty of flowers in our courtyard. Last year, our family moved to Chengdu and
we lived in an apartment, not a house, so there was no courtyard for her to grow plants.

However, my mom discovered a new place for her hobby -- the balcony. Chengdu is
very hot and humid all year round (终年潮湿闷热), so natives in Chengdu love spicy
food and chili pepper. Therefore, to integrate with ( 融 入 ) the local community, my
mom started to grow chilies on our balcony, including red banana peppers and yellow
bell peppers. As a result, our balcony is so colorful now.

Whenever my mom has some spare time, she would go to the balcony and do some
weeding (除草) and watering. Now, the chilies on our balcony are strong and colorful.
When the chilies are ripe, she would use them to cook famous Chengdu cuisines for
us, such as mapo tofu and hot pot.

I think my mom enjoys planting so much, not only because she wants to grow some
seasonings for herself, but also to develop a hobby after she moved to a brand new
place to kill time. It’s a meaningful thing for her.

Part 3

(1) Are there many people growing their own vegetables now?
I believe so, yes. Growing your own food can be a cheaper alternative to hunting
through grocery store produce. Homegrown food is rich in nutrients, and they will
have the peace of mind of knowing exactly how it was grown. Spending time in the
garden outside can also have other health benefits. Spending time in the sun will help
the body absorb vitamin D, which can strengthen bones. What’s more, spending time
working in the garden can lower anxiety and reduce stress. The gardeners might even
feel empowered once they can enjoy their food, knowing that they were able to grow

41
delicious fruits and vegetables from seeds.

(2) Do you think it's good to let kids learn how to plant?
Definitely! Gardening is a healthy, fun activity for children. Children develop new
skills and learn about science and nature from growing their own food. When a child
plants a seed and witnesses it grow into a thriving plant, whether it be a herb or a
vegetable, they are experiencing the cycles of living organisms. When they maintain
the garden, they understand that they are keeping their plants alive, fed and healthy.
Without the maintenance of gardening, a plant and garden will die. Therefore,
children can really benefit and learn a lot from planting plants themselves.

(3) What do you think of the job of a farmer?

A farmer manages farms, ranches, greenhouses, nurseries, and other agricultural
production organizations. Farmers are involved in planting, cultivating, performing
post-harvest duties, overseeing livestock, and supervising farm labour depending on
the type of farm. Nowadays people don’t give much importance to farmers and
farming. They don’t respect the people who work hard day and night to fill our
stomachs. In spite of their hard labour, they live a life of poverty as farmers normally
do not earn much. However, in my mind, farmers are the hardest working people and
they deserve everyone’s respect.

(4) What are the differences between traditional and modern agriculture?
There is a huge gap between traditional and modern agriculture. First, the traditional
farming system focuses on the food needs of farmers, so it is not suitable to meet the
needs of an increasing population of people. Nevertheless, modern agriculture focuses
on efforts to meet human food requirements and species breeding agriculture, aiming
to optimize farming to produce quality food. Second, traditional agriculture relies on
outdated information, outdated tools, and organic fertilizers, whereas contemporary
agriculture relies on technologically improved tools and machinery. Traditional
farming practices and expertise become outdated as globalization and modernization
forces increase.

When I was in high school, my classmate Lily and I were both big fans of Taylor
Swift. We shared how we feel about Taylor’s newly-released(新鲜出炉的) album
and sang out loud on our way home after school. One day, when we were buzzing
about( 叽 叽 喳 喳 ) Taylor’s world tour ( 世 界 巡 回 演 唱 会 ),The Red, and jealous of
people who could go there in person, she proposed that we go to Taylor’s concert
together in the summer before we go to college. I was so excited about this idea. I
thought, yeah, why not?

However, we were split into two different classes in our second year. Even though we
still talked online from time to time, we were just not close like before, and our
promise faded away(消逝) as time flew by. After the college entrance examination, I
went to visit my aunt in Australia and spent the whole summer there with my cousins.

Surprisingly, I got messages from Lily saying that she bought 2 tickets for Taylor’s
concert in Shanghai and asked if I could go with her. Those messages brought me
back to the old days when we had a Taylor fever(对……的狂热). A mixed feeling just
stroked me, and I ended up sitting around the house for the rest of that day, immersed
in reminiscence(对过去的追忆) of the past.

At the end of the story, I did make it, you see.

Part 3

1. How do people who are busy remember things they need to do?
I think it depends on what the job is. If it is a company executive, such as the CEO or
CFO, they generally have their own personal secretaries. These personal secretaries
will schedule executives' agendas and remind them every morning or whenever is
appropriate. If it is an ordinary busy person, they usually have an itinerary or a
notepad, and they will write their plans into the notepad, so that they will not forget
their busy schedule. So, everyone has their own different methods, but the similarity
is that everyone chooses to record their busy schedule.

2. Do you think people should remember family history?

I think everyone should remember their family history. Chinese people are very
focused on tradition and inheritance. As you know, China has a 5,000-year-old culture,
dating back to the period of Yao and Shun. Since that time, ancient Chinese have been
43
writing their family histories. Even now, many people's surnames can tell which
ancestor they came from and what their ancestors went through. It's a very magical
and mysterious thing, so I think everyone should remember their family history,
because only by remembering it can it be passed on from generation to generation.

3. If someone doesn't really like whom they are going to meet, they may deliberately
miss their appointment. Is that true? Why or why not?
I don't deny that this happens, but it's definitely not for most people. For example, at
work, it's normal if you don't like a colleague or your boss. But, when your colleague
needs to discuss a case with you, or your boss asks you to talk, even if you don't like
the other party, you will go to the appointment instead of deliberately forgetting the
appointment. If it weren't for the workplace, I think most people wouldn't deal with
them in the first place if they didn't like them. So, I think that statement is true, but
this kind of thing doesn't happen very often.

4. Which is more important, a work-related appointment or an appointment with a

friend? Why?
For me as an office worker, the appointment related to work is more important than
my personal appointments. As you may know, the current social environment is not
good. Epidemics, wars, economic downturns, and various natural disasters all broke
out at the same time. It is not easy for ordinary people, such as me, to find a job or
keep your job. So of course, the appointments at work are more important than
personal ones. But at the same time, I think everyone should pay attention to their
work-life balance and not give up their life because of work.

18. 糟糕购物

When it happened
What you bought
What problem you had
And explain how you felt about the experience

I’d like to talk about a horrible online shopping experience of mine. It was last year
when I started to use a new app called Xianyu, which was an online platform for
selling secondhand goods (二手物品). Many people were selling souvenirs on Xianyu,
such as autographed photos (签名照) of celebrities and signed albums.

I was a football maniac and my favorite football player was Messi. I had been
dreaming of meeting Messi for a long time. One day, I was browsing Xianyu, and I
found that someone was selling a football with Messi’s autograph. The seller claimed
to be a journalist and got this football during an interview with Messi. To prove it was
authentic, he sent me a picture of Messi and him with the football.

I believed him and paid a fortune for this football. However, after I purchased this
football, I found the same picture on social media, which was posted by someone who
lived in the UK. There was no way that the seller was living in another country, so I
tried to contact him, only to find he had blacklisted (拉黑) me.

I felt very angry and regretful about it. I really shouldn’t trust people online so easily.
I deleted the app Xianyu immediately after I found out I was cheated and there was no
way to recover from my loss. I hoped I could learn a lesson after this incident (引以为
).

Part 3

(1) What kind of customer service do you think is good?

I believe that good customer service should be customer-oriented and humanized.
First of all, good customer service should be considered from the customer's
standpoint. Human psychology is constantly changing, so in order to improve
customer service, service personnel should also keep abreast of customer ideas and
adjust their service content in a timely manner. Secondly, customer service should be
humanized, and service personnel should always keep in touch with customers to
enhance communication and the relationship. Good customer service is also an
important part of the shopping experience.

(2) What are the differences between shopping online and in-store?
Nowadays, with the development of information technology, there are more and more
people who choose to shop online. I think there are many differences between online
shopping and traditional offline shopping. First of all, in terms of price, online goods
often eliminate the cost of rent, utilities, etc., so the price is cheaper than offline goods.
Secondly, in terms of the shopping experience, the offline real-store shopping
experience is often incomparable to online shopping. When shopping online, people
often have incorrect expectations about products. In addition, another advantage of

45
online shopping is that it is more convenient, and people can buy what they need
without leaving home.

(3) What problems do customers often have while shopping?

I think the problems customers encounter when shopping can be divided into two
categories. The first category is problems with the product itself, such as inappropriate
size, poor quality, unattractive appearance, high price, etc., so that customers do not
meet their shopping expectations. The second category of problems is the customers'
shopping experience. There are many factors that affect the customer shopping
experience, such as the environment, the shopping process and customer service.
Whether the environment is clean, whether the furnishings are beautiful, whether the
payment is convenient, and whether there is a perfect pre-sales and after-sales service
all directly affect the customer's shopping experience.

( 4 ) What do you think customers should do when there are problems with the
products bought online?
I am very experienced in dealing with online shopping problems. Because of the
convenience of online shopping, I often choose online shopping. In many shopping
attempts, it is not uncommon to encounter unsatisfactory shopping experiences. When
there is a problem with a product, the first thing you should do is take pictures or
videos to collect evidence. Then you should actively communicate with the
merchant's customer service to clarify the problem and discuss a suitable solution. If
the two sides do not agree on this step, then you can only seek arbitration from the
online shopping platform again.

19. 印象深刻的英语课
Describe an impressive English lesson you had and enjoyed
You should say:
What it was about
When you had it
What the teacher did
And why you enjoyed the lesson

I guess that the most impressive English class I ever took was when I participated in
English club , which did inspire me a lot in language learning.
46
It was in my first year of high school and my school invited a British teacher named
David to give a lecture about English learning. Surprisingly, he didn't simply blather
about( 喋 喋 不 休 ) specific methods of learning a language but shared the cultural
differences he encountered while living in China instead. For example, In the UK,
opening a gift immediately when receiving it is a sign of respect to the giver. While in
China, the same act of kindness(善举) actually conveys the opposite meaning. Other
than that, I was impressed with the example of compliments. In China, you should
deny praise from others to show your modesty. But for many Westerners, it is
suggested to accept compliments and say thank you.

I was totally fascinated by(着迷于) the intriguing and vivid details of the facts that
he mentioned. At the end of the lecture, I asked a bunch of (许多的 )questions in the
Q&A session. Fortunately, my doubts were all well answered with patience and
concise instruction. I still feel grateful for this thought-provoking( 发 人 深 思 的 ) and
enlightening(启发性的) class.

Since then, I have been passionate about ( 热 衷 于 ) learning English as well as

studying cultural differences between eastern and western societies, because I want to
look at the world we live in from different perspectives of native speakers of another
language.

Part 3

1. Why do people learn foreign languages?

I think most people learn a foreign language in order to find a better job in the future.
For example, international exchanges are becoming more common every day, and
there are more and more multinational companies. In this case, if you can speak a
certain foreign language, you will have better chances of finding a job than someone
who does not speak a foreign language. Of course, I can not deny that some people
learn a foreign language because they like the culture of a certain country. For
example, some people like to watch Korean dramas so they learn Korean, and some
people like Japanese anime so they learn Japanese.

2. What makes a good foreign language teacher?

I think a good foreign language teacher should not only do the job well, that is, teach
students to use the foreign language, but more importantly, let the students really
enjoy the foreign language and have a cultural sense of the people who use it.
Language is nothing but a tool for communication. Just because students can speak
English doesn't mean they can understand the culture behind the language, and if they
can't understand the culture of English speakers, they may not be able to really
communicate well with the locals if they go abroad.

3. Do you think grammar is important when learning foreign languages?

47
I think grammar is very important when learning a new language. Without a good
grasp of grammar, we cannot construct correct sentences completely or clearly. Of
course, I do not deny the fact that you can communicate as long as you can speak
certain words. For example, when shopping, as long as we can say "pay", the local
people can understand what we mean. But for in-depth communication, good
grammar is very important. If the grammar is not good, the other party may not
understand the clear meaning of what we want to convey.

4. Is it interesting to be a foreign language teacher? Why or why not?

I can only guess the answer to this question, after all, my job is not as a teacher. My
best friend, who is an English teacher in a high school, told me about her experience
as a foreign language teacher. First, foreign language teachers are always more
mysterious than other teachers. I think this may be related to the fact that most people
do not know the language, so when you communicate in this language, others will feel
you are very mysterious. Secondly, she told me that a foreign language teacher can
bring students different cultures and ideas. When traditional culture and foreign
culture collide, it is often the time when creativity is born.

20. 有趣小说/故事
Describe a story or novel you have read that you found interesting
You should say:
When you read it
What it was about
Who wrote it
And explain why it was interesting

I'd like to talk about my favorite science fiction, The Three-Body Problem. It was a
trilogy ( 三 部 曲 ) by famous Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin. It has gained wide
popularity. Even Obama, the former president of America recommended this piece of
fiction. The writer Liu Cixin has also won many international awards.

To sum up ( 概括来说), this fiction portrayed the war between Earth and an alien
48
civilization in a nearby star system called the Trisolaris. I first read this fiction when I
was in my freshman year at college. As a student majoring in Computer science, I was
fascinated by the character Sophon. She was an artificial intelligence created by the
Trisolarans. Their technology was so advanced that Sophon was able to think
independently and act like a human.

At that time, I was preparing to further my study in artificial intelligence. I was

shocked by Liu Cixin's imagination. This fiction let my imagination go wild (畅想). I
can’t help but (忍不住做某事) wonder how long it will take for scientists to develop
an artificial intelligence like Sophon. By far, it seems like an impossible task.
However, I tend to stay positive on this matter.

It didn't occur to me that an extracurricular book would inspire me so much. At first, I

just read it for fun, but now I often reread it to awaken my passion for my career.

Part 3

(1) How does technology help people tell stories?

I think with the development of modern science and technology, people have more
and more ways to tell stories. In the past, people used to tell stories in a very singular
way, only through oral narration or writing. But nowadays, there are many different
ways to tell stories. For example, now everyone can take short videos and post them
on the platform TikTok to tell stories . This is an example of how technology can help
people tell their stories to others.

(2) Do you prefer to read e-books or paper books?

I personally prefer to read e-books rather than paper books. For me, paper books are
often too thick and heavy to carry around. Every time I read, I need a bookmark to
mark my reading progress, which is very troublesome, and e-books can be
conveniently stored in mobile devices such as cell phones, so it is convenient for me
to read anytime and anywhere. As for parents, they often talk about how e-books will
hurt the eyes, but there are now many apps dedicated to solving this problem. As long
as you turn on the eye protection mode on your phone, it will not hurt your eyes so
much.

(3) Why are mystery novels so popular nowadays?

I think the main reasons for the popularity of mystery novels are as follows. First of
all, mystery novels often contain a lot of common sense and abundant subject
knowledge, which can broaden the readers' horizons, improve their insight and enrich
their knowledge. Secondly, mystery novels are often good at creating a suspenseful
atmosphere, stimulating readers' interest and curiosity, and allowing them to gain an
immersive reading experience. Finally, mystery novels satisfy people's need to spend
their time and can provide a more relaxing reading experience compared to more
serious literature.

49
(4) What kinds of novels are suitable for a film adaptation?
I think the most suitable novels for film adaptation today are romance novels. Because
readers of romance novels often want to see their favorite works in film and television,
and they want beautiful actresses and handsome actors to present the beautiful love
story on the big screen. Secondly, the plot of a love story is generally richer and more
fluid, which is suitable for expression through the art of film. In addition, today there
are fewer excellent romance movie scripts, and many excellent romance movies are
adapted from literary works, such as Gone with the Wind and Call Me by Your Name,
which I like very much.

21. 决意等待
Describe a time you made a decision to wait for something
You should say:
When it happened
What you waited for
Why you made the decision to wait
And explain how you felt while waiting

The decision I want to share is that I want to go to the next Taylor concert with my
friend Lily when the pandemic is over.

Last year, both my friend and I stayed put(待在原地) in our home city for a long
time because of the outbreak. Can you believe it? We didn't leave the city for six
months even though we are both travel lovers( 旅 行 爱 好 者 ). Many of the concerts
were also cancelled for the same reason.

One day, when I was talking with my friend Lily online, I found that we were both
desperately missing the days when we used to attend music festivals and concerts
together. So, we decided that when Taylor Swift has her next concert in China, we
must go. Hopefully, we can realize this wish(实现所愿) as soon as possible, the days
without concerts are too boring to live through. Later that day, I was joking with Lily
50
that I read a new study suggesting that fortnightly(两周一次) gig(现场演唱会)
attendance extends life expectancy by nine years, so we’d better strictly stick to that
suggestion, then we can make up the time we wasted on waiting.

Anyway, I do hold that after enduring such a long and cruel battle against coronavirus,
we definitely deserve to treat ourselves to a wild party like Taylor’s concert and have
some relaxing moments. It will be full-filling waiting for the concert with my friends
together.

Part 3

1. Do people in your country like to take public transportation?

I think the vast majority of Chinese people prefer to take public transportation instead
of driving. First, the large population of Chinese cities means that there are also many
cars on the road. Driving a private car, you will often encounter traffic jams,
especially during rush hour. I can say without hesitation that during rush hour, taking
public transport is much faster than driving a private car. Second, taking public
transport is much cheaper than using a private car. Gas prices are very high these days,
but a 5 RMB subway ticket can safely get you from one end of the city to the other.

2. Why do some people like a slow-paced life?

I think this is largely determined by character. Some people are relatively quiet and
like to be alone, and such people usually prefer a slow-paced life. They may prefer
small cities, or even the countryside, to big cities. A slow-paced life allows them to
slow down and listen better to their inner voices. Some people like the fast pace of big
cities, which can make them feel the enthusiasm of life and the vitality of the world.
So, I think that the rhythm of life a person likes is inseparable from a person's
character.

3. Is being patient good for people? Why or why not?

It depends on what the person does. For example, for a teacher, patience is very
important. Not all students are geniuses. The teacher may need to repeat the same
question several times, or even a dozen times. If the teacher is impatient, it may lead
to students not being able to keep up with the teacher's lessons, thus failing to get a
good grade on the test. But patience may not be a great thing for a salesperson. The
speed of sales has to be fast, and it is necessary to immediately judge the spending
power of customers, so as to have higher sales.

4. Are people less patient now than people in the past? Why or why not?
I think the patience of modern people is indeed not as good as those of the past. I
remember a study conducted by Microsoft that said modern people's focus time
dropped from 12 seconds to 8 seconds. The reason is inseparable from the progress of
society and the acceleration of the pace of life. Nowadays, people want to do things
quickly and they don't want to spend time on things they don't like or things where

51
they can’t see the results immediately. With the progress of science and technology
and the changes of time, improving speed has become a goal pursued by most people.

22. 向旅游者推荐你国家的一个地方
Describe a place in your country or a part of your country that you would
recommend to visitors
You should say:
What it is
Where it is
What people can do there
And explain why you would recommend it to visitors

我推荐成都的原因就是,成都的人民非常热情好客。在这里的街头,如果你遇到什
么麻烦,当地的居民都会热情主动地帮助你,对游客非常友好。

I’d like to recommend my hometown Chengdu, which is a very beautiful place and a
culturally rich (富有人文气息) city. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province. It’s
located in southwest China, and it’s one of the most important economic, financial
and business centers in China. It has a highly advanced transportation and tourism
industry, which is perfect for visitors to stay in.

There are tons of things you can enjoy in Chengdu. Here, tourists can not only taste
the delicious Sichuan cuisine, such as hot pot and mapo tofu; but also enjoy all kinds
of scenic spots (风景名胜) and excellent sights. If you are a foodie (美食爱好者),
Chengdu is like a paradise for you. If you are a culture lover and want to discover the
city’s history, Chengdu is the place to go.

Another reason I’d like to recommend Chengdu is the people here. Chengdu natives
are very hospitable ( 热情好客的) and warm-hearted. If you encounter any trouble
here, the local residents will voluntarily offer to help. They are very friendly to
tourists. Besides, Chengdu is known for its laid-back lifestyle ( 闲散的生活方式).
Affected by that, people in Chengdu are easygoing. They know how to live life to the
fullest (享受生活).

52
These are the reasons why I speak highly of Chengdu and I can go on and on about it.

Part 3

(1) Is it important to take photos while traveling?

For me, taking photos is an important part of traveling. Having beautiful photos taken
is an important factor that affects the travel experience, because I feel that when
traveling, the experience at the time will only exist for a split second in the present
moment, and human memory will always be prone to change until it slowly fades
away. Then, when we forget, the souvenir left by the trip is the photos we took at that
time. Memories may only last a few years or even a few months, but photos can be
kept forever. When we return home after the trip, we can still recall the feelings of the
trip when we see the photos we took.

(2) Can you trust other people's travel journals on the Internet?
For myself, my choice to trust other people's travelogues on the Internet when I travel
is based on the following considerations. When we travel, we often go to places we
are not familiar with, so if we can learn from other people's travel experiences, we can
take fewer detours and sometimes avoid being cheated, so that we can arrange our trip
more reasonably and get a better travel experience. However, the information on the
Internet is mixed, and there is no shortage of false information and exaggerated
propaganda, which requires careful screening. When browsing, I tend to trust the
more objective travelogues rather than the ones full of praise.

(3) What factors affect how people feel about traveling?

It seems to me that there are many factors that influence how people feel about a trip.
The first is the destination of the trip, whether the place of travel meets your travel
expectations directly determines whether the trip will leave you satisfied. There is an
old Chinese saying: the benevolent man enjoys the mountains, and the wise man
enjoys the water. People always have different preferences for mountains and water,
so choosing a travel destination carefully is the first step in planning a satisfying trip.
The second important factor that affects people's travel experience is the travel partner.
Traveling with like-minded friends will increase the enjoyment of the trip, but if you
are traveling with someone you don't like, then it will definitely reduce the enjoyment
of the trip significantly.

(4) Will you go to a foreign country to travel because of the distinct landscape?
Perhaps three years ago, the answer would have been a firm YES, as I consider
distinct landscapes to be an important consideration in my choice of travel
destinations. But nowadays, due to the epidemic, traveling abroad has become a
luxury for me. I have to consider the various monetary and time costs associated with
traveling . Not only does a trip abroad cost an exorbitant amount of money, it also
means a month of quarantine, which is very costly for me. So, I don't think I would
travel to a foreign country just for the distinct landscape now, I would choose other

53
places within the country with beautiful scenery instead.

23. 克服困难终成功
Describe a time when you overcame difficulties in doing something and succeeded

I would like to talk about my experience of participating in an English speech contest

held in my English class when I was in college. In my freshman year, I took an
English class and we were required to give an English speech as the assignment for
the final exam. As a person who struggles with stage fright(怯场), I was so worried
that I would fail the exam because I couldn't finish the speech.

When my roommate Lily found out that I am on pins and needles(坐卧不安) because
of the task, she suggested that I join the English society to improve my English
speaking skills and overcome my fears. With her encouragement, I started attending
the English society activities. After the awkward ice-breaking session( 破冰环节), I
gradually got used to talking in front of people and became confident and composed
on the stage.

To get a good score, I even invited some international students to polish my

manuscript and had several rehearsals. When the final exam came, it turned out that I
had overcome my fear already. I collected mysel( f 镇定下来) and delivered a speech
about environmental protection, ending with applause. The professor said she could
see that I was making progress and I was doing great. Being so glad to hear that, I felt
like I was on cloud nine (高兴得好像在云上)at that moment.
To appreciate Lily for her supportive advice, I treated Lily to a hot pot dinner to
celebrate at the end of the semester.

Part 3

1) Should people set goals for themselves?

I would say yes. We humans are social beings. Living in our society, we take on
different tasks and are engaged in all sorts of relationships. However, our time is
limited. We must make choices every day. If we don’t set goals for ourselves, we may
randomly make decisions, or just follow trends, then in the end, we might end up
accomplishing nothing. That can cause us to feel frustrated and void. On the contrary,
if we have our goals mapped out, we are more likely to achieve a happy and
meaningful life.

2) How do you define success?

Well, people have different definitions of success. For those who are ambitious, they
normally think that success means a promotion in the workplace or making a big
fortune in business. They like to label success by money. However, for philosophical
thinkers, they usually relate success to happiness. They tend to think if someone’s in
good health, and even better, if he/she has supportive family and friends, that’ s a
great success in life! So, it all depends on one’s life perspective, I think. Whatever
your goal in life is, once you’ve reached it, you’re successful!

3) How do we judge whether young people are successful?

Well, young people are at the prime of their lives. They should make the best use of
their advantages. They are strong and energetic. They should engage themselves in
challenging tasks. It doesn’t matter whether they go to a prestigious university. As
long as they work hard and can achieve something in their career and life, they are
successful. For example, some young people work hard in the factory and they earn
enough to realize their dreams. They don’t need to depend on their parents. Actually,
they could even offer help to their parents if needed. I think that’s a success!

4) Are successful people lonely?

It depends on what kind of success you are talking about. For those who are
successful in social relationships, I don ’ t think they would feel lonely. On the
contrary, they are often surrounded by warm people. However, for those who strive to
climb the career ladder , they are likely to end up in a lonely position. ‘ cause the
higher you get, the fewer friends you have. People would look up to you rather than
relate to you. Also, ‘cause you devote so much of your time and energy to work, you
won’t have much time for your personal life. Of course, you could feel lonely.

24. 户外活动
Describe an outdoor activity you did in a new place recently
You should say:

Where and when you went there
What the activity was
Whether you asked for help in the activity
And explain why you attended the activity

I’d like to talk about my recent experience of joining the school football team and
training as a team member. Three months ago, one of the strikers (前锋) on our school
team dropped out and the team members could not find someone to replace him. My
roommate Tim was captain of the football team, and we often practiced football
together, so he knew my ability.

As a result, Tim sincerely asked me to join the football team, train with other team
members and be prepared for the upcoming competitions. I also wanted to participate
in an outdoor activity with new friends, so I said yes. However, I soon encountered
(遇到) some problems in training.
At first, I thought the daily practice of the team wouldn’t be too difficult, but I was
wrong. We didn’t just practice football on the playground. Tim said that to enhance
our stamina we had to do some long-distance running (长跑), and I just had to bite the
bullet (咬紧牙关). I didn’t really ask for anyone’s help, but Tim was such a great guy
that he offered to help me. After he knew about my difficulties, he gave me some
advice and took me to train with him. Gradually, I could catch up with the whole team.

I think joining the football team was meaningful, because not only did I improve my
football skills, but I also made many new friends.

(1) What outdoor activities are popular in China?

As far as I am concerned, a variety of activities have received a lot of popularity in
our country such as swimming, boating, climbing, and so forth as more and more
people have realized the importance of health, especially after the outbreak of covid-
19.

(2) Are those people who like dangerous activities more likely to be successful?
Personally speaking, it is hard to say. Being successful depends on many factors such
as intelligence, social circle, family background, mental abilities, and even timing. As
far as I am concerned, people who are partial to dangerous activities are likely to be
brave and determined and it is not a major concern. As a result, it is likely for them to
be successful, but it is not always the case.

( 3 ) Do you think it's better for people to change jobs when there are new
opportunities?
From my own perspective, it depends. Sometimes, especially for the young, as they
have fewer ideas about whether they will stay in the same organization due to their
limited experience, it is adaptable for them to try new opportunities and they are
likely to acquire new knowledge and enrich their experience in new job positions.
However, there are many benefits of staying in the same position. Especially
considering the stiff competition in the job market, it is more likely to secure an
advantageous position if people work for the same company for a longer time, as
employers always value loyalty. Besides, staying in the same position allows people
to have a deeper insight into the business operation and the structure of staff, which
leads to higher productivity without a doubt.

(4)Should young people try as many new activities as possible?

From my point of view, trying new activities is beneficial for the growth of young
people. First of all, trying different activities allows youngsters to meet people from
all walks of life and expand their social circle which is rewarding for them. Secondly,
by working with people, they are also likely to hone the abilities like leadership,
teamwork, communication skills, and so on. Most importantly, by attending activities
such as traveling and researching, their horizons can be elevated at the same time.
However, it is worth noting that too many activities are likely to distract the young
from something more serious like gaining academic qualifications and certificates
which secures their promising future. As a result, it is best for students to attend
activities moderately.

When I was in my senior year in college, I was planning to go abroad to pursue my

master's degree in communication and I worked so hard to fully prepare myself for
future life in another country. But, I was always worried that my English skills weren't
good enough for me to lead a life abroad, given that I was such an introverted person
and I hated it whenever I stumbled over my words(磕磕巴巴).

Once, when I mentioned my concern to my friend Lily, she encouraged me to go to

the English event held by the English club. As my roommate, she has given me a lot
of tangible and solid advice throughout my four years in college, and I really love and
trust her. Hence, I took her suggestion just after a couple of minutes of hesitating.

To help me break the ice, which always makes my heart flutter(心跳不止) when I
am in a new place, she accompanied me to the English event and introduced me to
new friends there. With her encouragement, I finally got myself together (镇定下来做
某事)and was able to talk to the international students in the English club. Since I had
a good start, I gradually took to it like a duck to water (如鱼得水)in various English
club activities.

After a few months of practice, my English speaking skills improved a lot. I am really
grateful for what Lily did.

Part 3

(1) What qualities make someone a role model?

The answer to this question might vary from person to person, in my opinion,
however, I think the basic qualities to become a role model should be integrity,
commitment, and responsibility. The power of a role model is unlimited so it’s quite
58
important to follow and learn from the right people. Firstly, integrity is the basis of
success, it’s common that most successful people have this trait . Secondly,
commitment makes sure that people could devote themselves to their field. Finally,
responsibility encourages people to always do the right thing. So, I think these three
basic qualities make a person a role model to learn from.

(2) Why should children learn from role models?

Adults always encourage children to learn from role models, here is an important
reason. We all know some people who are excellent in certain fields could usually set
standards of upright conduct for children to follow. For example, many children learn
from Elon Musk because he works super hard and has a unique power to make a
difference in his field. By learning his story and reading his speeches, children could
inspect how the industry is operating and what people should do to protect this planet.
That’s how role models influence children’s ideas about work and life.

(3) Who can influence children more, teachers or parents?

Speaking of the influence on children, it’s hard to tell whether teachers influence
children more or parents leave a deeper impact on children. However, as far as I’m
concerned, parents influence children more often because they act as children’s first
teachers in the world while children learn most of their basic skills and habits before
they begin school education. But we need to know that teachers’ impact on children is
no less important than parents.

(4) What kind of international news inspires people?

Good news is happening around the world every minute. I think what inspires people
most might be the decline of confirmed cases testing positive and the reduction of the
death toll caused by COVID-19. In the past three years, the pandemic has become
almost the largest enemy that is confronted by the whole world and people are hoping
to hear the news that it would vanish someday. Besides, I think the news related to big
discoveries concerning biology, history, astronomy, and so forth is also inspiring
because every discovery means a step forward in knowing our world better.
