What is Alcohol?

⚫ Ethanol or Ethyl:
⚫ The type of alcohol in
alcoholic beverages
● can be produced
synthetically or naturally
by fermenting fruits and
grains
Other Types of Alcohol
Methyl
● Highly Flammable material
● Poisonous
○ Examples are Antifreeze, Wood spirits, fuel,
and formaldehyde
Isopropyl
● Also known as rubbing alcohol
● Bad for the body
What is the Alcohol We Drink ?
● An addictive depressant

● Causes intoxication
○ the state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol or other
substance

BAC or Blood-Alcohol Concentration
• BAC stands for blood-alcohol concentration, which the
percentage of alcohol in the bloodstream.

• Factors that affect BAC:


• Weight
• Gender
• Time
• Amount
• Food
• Other medications/drugs
Short-Term Effects
The following short term effects depend on how much is taken and the physical condition of the
individual:
-Slurred speech ● Unconsciousness

-Drowsiness ● Coma
● Blackouts
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Upset stomach
-Headaches
-Breathing difficulties
-Distorted vision and hearing
-Impaired judgment
-Decreased perception and coordination
Long Term Effects
Binge drinking
● Alcoholand continued alcohol use in large amounts are associated with many
poisoning
health●problems like:
High blood including:
pressure, stroke, and other
heart-related diseases
• Disrupts normal brain development;
• Liver damage and cirrhosis of the liver;
• Brain cells die, decreasing brain mass;
• Stomach and intestinal ulcers and
destroyed organs
• Blood pressure increases, causing
heart disease, heart attack, or stroke;
• Male sperm production decreases

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)
