Instructions
1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eight (8) questions.

2. Answer all questions in section A and choose two (2) questions from sections B and C.

3. Section A carries twenty (20) marks, and sections B and C carry forty (40) marks each.

4. Non-programmable calculators may be used.

5. All writing must be in blue or black ink, except drawing which must be in pencil.

6. All communication devices and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination

room.

7. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer sheet(s).

SECTION A (20 Marks)

Answer all questions from this section.

1. Describe clearly the relationship between economics and the following subjects;
i) Mathematics
ii) Sociology
iii) Psychology
iv) Statistics
v) Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
2. Briefly examine five (5) adverse effects of deflation on the economic development of Tanzania.
SECTION B (40 Marks)
Answer any two (2) questions from this section.
3. (a) Given the following demand schedule of beef in Majengo market Dodoma city and answer the
questions that follow.

i) What does the schedule imply?
ii) Sketch the demand curve.
iii) Formulate the demand equation.
iv) Calculate the price elasticity of demand at the price of Tshs 6,000.
(b) Explain five (5) factors affecting the price elasticity of supply of various products in the market.
4. (a) Mtika received a salary of Tshs 500,000 as a qualified elementary teacher. He made the decision
to give up teaching and launch his own business working with brick-making businesses. He had
maintained the following monthly records: the cost of raw materials was Tshs 2,500,000/=, the
water bill was Tshs 150,000/=, the electricity bill was Tshs 110,000/= and the cost of labour per
worker was Tshs 10,000/= per day, and there were five workers. Mtika was a helpful financial
analyst to the business, pointing out that the company could make Tshs 400,000/= if the funds were
invested in shares.

Fortunately, Mtika was using office premises, that he inherited from his family and was hired for
Tshs 300,000/= a month. But at that time, capital depreciated by Tshs 60,000/=. The total number
of bricks produced was 300 per day and the price of each brick was Tshs 1,200/=.
Calculate the following on a monthly basis;
i) Total accounting costs
ii) Total implicit costs
iii) Total explicit costs
iv) Accounting profit
v) Economic profit
(b) Examine any five (5) advantages of small firms in the economic development of Tanzania.
5. (a) Given 𝑄 = 80𝐿 + 6𝐿2 − 2⁄3 𝐿3 where; Q is the quantity of output in Kg and L is the number
of labour in man-hours.
i) Determine the average product (AP) and marginal product (MP) functions.
ii) Determine the number of labourers at the end of stage I.
iii) Determine the number of labour that maximizes output.
iv) Find the marginal product at maximum total output.
v) Determine the value of labour at the starting point of the law of diminishing marginal return.
(b) Examine any five (5) factors which determine the real wage of workers in the economy.
SECTION C (40 Marks)
Answer any two (2) questions from this section.
6. Most developed countries suffer from high levels of ageing population. Explain any six (6)
economic consequences of the ageing population.
7. Late 1990s’ Tanzania started to adopt a privatization policy in order to improve the performance
of the economy. Discuss six (6) common ways that were used to adopt the privatization of public
enterprises in Tanzania.
8. Brain drain is one of the problems caused by unemployment in developing countries. With six (6)
points, explain how developing countries struggle to remove the problem.
