I Kings 18:41-46

1 As soon as the contest

on Mount Carmel was
over and the Lord had
shown His power by
sending fire, Elijah told
King Ahab, ‘Go, eat and
drink, for heavy rain is
on the way.’

2 Then Elijah climbed to

the top of Mount Carmel
with his servant.

3 Then he bent down to

the ground and put his
face between his knees
and prayed for rain.
4 ‘Go and look towards the
sea,’ Elijah told his
servant. So the servant
went up and looked.

5 But he could not see any

sign of rain.

6 ‘There is nothing there,’

the servant reported. So
Elijah prayed a second
time.

7 The servant was sent to

look again.

8 But he returned to say

there was still no sign of
rain.
9 Elijah prayed for a third
time.

10 The servant looked out

to sea once more.

11 But again there was

nothing to see. Elijah
prayed a fourth time.

12 But still there was no

answer to his prayer for
rain.

13 Elijah continued to pray

for a fifth time. The
servant searched the
sky again.
14 But there was no sign of
rain.

15 Elijah was not prepared

to give up. God had
promised to send rain
when Elijah asked. Was
God going to keep His
promise?

16 Elijah prayed for a

seventh time. The
servant climbed up to
look out to sea.

17 Suddenly, he noticed a
small cloud, about the
size of a man’s fist,
rising out of the sea. He
rushed back to tell Elijah
the news.

18 Elijah knew God had

answered his prayer and
had a message for King
Ahab. ‘Hitch up your
chariot and go down the
mountain before the rain
stops you.’ The sky grew
black with clouds, the
wind rose and heavy
rain started falling. King
Ahab quickly rode off in
his chariot.
19 The power of the Lord
came on Elijah and,
tucking his cloak into his
belt, he ran ahead of
Ahab all the way to
Jezreel. It was about the
same distance as a
marathon run.
