CH:11 CHEMICAL EFFECTS OF ELECTRIC CURRENT

CLASS: VIII SOLVED WORK SHEET

1. Classify the following materials as Good conductor / Poor conductor

Copper sulphate solution Good conductor Vinegar Good conductor
Vegetable oil Poor conductor Sodium chloride solution Good conductor
Pure Honey Poor conductor Milk Good conductor
Sugar solution Poor conductor Dilute Hydrochloric acid Good conductor
Lemon juice Good conductor Distilled water Poor conductor
Tap water Good conductor Curd Good conductor
2. What is LED? How do you connect an LED in a circuit? Why do you prefer LEDs in electric circuits?
The electric device which is used in the tester instead of the bulb is an LED. Its full form is Light Emitting
Diode. The longer lead (leg) from the LED should be connected to the positive terminal of the battery and
the shorter lead to the negative terminal of the battery.
It is preferred to other bulbs as it can glow even when weak or less current flows through it.

3. Define electrolysis. State three uses of electrolysis.

Electrolysis, the process by which electric current is passed through a substance to effect a chemical
change. Electrolysis is used extensively in metallurgical processes, such as in extraction (electrowinning) or
purification (electrorefining) of metals from ores or compounds and in deposition of metals from solution
(electroplating).
4. Name three effects of electricity.
Heating, magnetic and chemical effects.
5. Which effect of electric current is used in
electroplating?
Chemical effect of electric current is used in electroplating.

6. Why is a layer of zinc coated over iron materials?

Zinc is coated over iron to prevent iron from corrosion and rust.
7. An electric current is passed through a conducting solution. List four possible observations.
The following observations can be seen when an electric current is passed through a conducting
solution:
a. Bubbles of gas may be formed on the electrodes.

b. Deposits of metal may be seen on electrodes.

c. Change in colour of the solution may take place.
d. The solution may get heated.
8. Define electroplating.
The process of depositing or coating a layer of any desired metal on the surface of other material by
means of electricity is called electroplating.

9. Observing that the bulb does not glow in the circuit shown in Fig. A, Boojho changed the circuit as
shown in Fig B. He observed deflection in the magnetic compass.

A B

(i) What does the deflection in the magnetic compass indicate?

Deflection of the compass needle shows that the current is flowing in the circuit. It is the magnetic effect
of current.

(ii) What would be the effect of increase in the number of turns in the coil wound around the magnetic
compass in Figure.B?
The compass needle would deflect more as the current flowing through the circuit increases with the
increase in number of turns.
(iii)What will be observed if the number of cells is increased in the circuit shown in Figure. B? The
compass needle would deflect more as the current flowing through the circuit increases with more
number of cells.
10. Draw the following diagrams:

a. Electrolysis of water.
b. A circuit showing - electroplating of copper on an iron nail.
c. A simple circuit showing electro refining of copper.

11. Assertion and Reason Questions

i. ASSERTION :The bubbles of a gas may be formed on the electrodes.

REASON : The passage of an electric current through a conducting solution causes chemical reaction.

A) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is correct explanation for assertion.
B) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is not correct explanation for assertion.
C) Assertion is a correct statement but reason is a wrong statement.
D) Assertion is a wrong statement but reason is correct statement.
Ans- A) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is correct explanation for assertion.

ii. ASSERTION : Iron is used in bridges and automobiles to provide strength.

REASON: A coating of zinc is deposited on iron to protect it from corrosion and formation of rust.
A) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is correct explanation for assertion.
B) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is not correct explanation for assertion.
C) Assertion is a correct statement but reason is wrong statement.
D) Assertion is a wrong statement but reason is correct statement.
Ans- B) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is not correct explanation for
assertion.
12. Case Based Study Question

A brand new bicycle has shiny handlebars and wheel rims. However, if these are accidentally scratched, the
shiny coating comes off revealing a not so shiny surface beneath. You might have also seen women using
ornaments, which appear to be made of gold. However, with repeated use, the coating wears off, revealing
some other metal beneath. The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by
means of electricity is called electroplating. Electroplating is a very useful process. It is widely used in
industry for coating metal objects with a thin layer of a different metal. The layer of metal deposited has
some desired property, which the metal of the object lacks. In electroplating factories, the disposal of the
waste is a major concern. It is a polluting waste and specific disposal guidelines should be followed to
protect the environment.

I. Why is tin electroplated on iron to make cans used for storing food?
a. Tin is less reactive than iron and tin coating prevents food from coming in contact with iron.
b. Tin is more reactive than iron and tin coating allows food to come in contact with iron.
c. Tin is easily available so it is used.
d. Tin is cheap metal.

II. What effect of current does electroplating show?

a. Chemical Effect
b. Heating Effect
c. Magnetic Effect
d. Electrostatic Effect

III. Name the metal which is usually electroplated on car parts, bath taps and bicycle handlebars.
a. Zinc
b. Tin
c. Chromium
d. Iron

IV. Jewellery makers electroplate _________ and ___________ on less expensive metals.
a. zinc and iron
