RBEG-AA Internal Combustion Vehicles Battery Handling

Guidelines

This document provides a quick guideline for most of the aspects relating the handling of Bosch
battery:

1. Keeping the record

2. Storing conditions
3. Approved testing and charging equipment
4. Warranty policy according to the contract

1.0 Keeping Battery Record

Every customer should build his own coding system to mark the sold batteries beside keeping the
code and invoice related to each other on his Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for traceability
and warranty purposes

1.1 Recommended Coding Structure:

The structure should contain at least:

• Wholesaler name or code or mark

• Sold date to retailer
• Battery Type
• Capacity
• Year sold serial

1.2 Recommended Way to Mark Batteries

Avoid mechanical marking using methods that might damage the battery, below the approved
solutions:

• Plastic stickers resistant to weather and handling condition

Guidelines

• Laser carving machines, it is recommended to be done on battery top and not covering any
code on the battery cover (wholesaler should select a certain place to crave his code)

2.0 Batteries Storing:

The storage conditions have direct effect on battery life and performance

2.1 Batteries Storing Conditions:

Recommended storing conditions of a battery are:

• Storing temperature should not exceed than 15 degrees Celsius, the higher the temperature
the higher the self-discharge
• Batteries should not be exposed to direct sun as this can increase its self-discharge heavily
• Storing Humidity play an important role on battery discharge, the higher the humidity the
higher the self-discharge
• Batteries should be tested on monthly bases using a multimeter, the reference should not
reduce than 12.5V, below this value, the battery should be charged
• Charging cycle should be when the battery reaches a potential difference of 12.5V or every 3
months of the start of storing or after 3 months of pervious charging
• Batteries cannot be stacked on more than 3 layers, more than 3 layers can damage stored
batteries
• Batteries are not recommended to be stored on the floor (cement or epoxy) or even on
racks without plastic or wooden ballets, without ballets, batteries may have accelerated
discharge
• Flowing First in First Out (FIFO) storing concept
• Batteries that receive charging more than 3 times are not recommended to be sold as new

3.0 Approved Charging and Testing Equipment

The battery performance and life is affected by battery State of Charge (SOC) , the below are Bosch
approved charging and testing equipment

RBEG-AA Internal Combustion Vehicles Battery Handling
Guidelines

3.1 Approved Charging Equipment: (Mandatory)

Bosch approve only smart chargers to ensure the correct level of SOC is reached without putting
battery under risk of under or over charging, below are list of Bosch approved chargers:

• BAT 490 (production stopped)

• BAT 645 (passenger only)
• BAT 690 (passenger and commercial)
• BAT 6120 (passenger and commercial)

3.2 Approved Testing Equipment: (Mandatory)

Bosch approve only smart testers to test SOC and SOH according to different battery testing norms,
without subjecting the battery to excessive thermal stress, below are list of Bosch approved
chargers:

• BAT 125 (production stopped)

• BAT 171 (production stopped)
• BAT 115
• BAT 131 (production stopped)

3.3 Generic Tools Needed in Some Case (Recommended)

3.3.1 FSA 500 or Multimeter with:

• DC volts measure to do OCV measurements

• Temperature measure for ambient temperature measure
• DC clamp amperage in mA and A for quiescent current measure and charging measure

4.0 Warranty Policies and Procedures:

The detailed warranty policies and procedures can be found in Bosch Automotive Battery Warranty
Agreement (BABWA) which is signed by RBEG and wholesaler "Customer"

4.1 Judging Warranty Case of a Used Battery Within Warranty Period:

According to BABWA document warranty period varies, to be as follows:

• Passenger Batteries (flooded type or SLI "Starting, Lighting and Ignition") S3, S4 and S5 are
subjected to 12 months warranty period
• Passenger Batteries (EFB and AGM) S4E and S5A are subjected to 18 months warranty
period
• Commercial Batteries (flooded type) T3, T4 and T5 are subjected to 6 months warranty
period also include S series which are used for commercial applications
