Audition and Selection
More than a hundred young students turned up to audition
for a part in the famous musical ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The girls
were hoping to play the lead role of Juliet while the boys
wanted to be Romeo. Those who got through the audition
would have a chance of having a role in the musical.

Everyone waited in the school hall to register. They were

each given a name tag with a number. Then they were
ushered into a theatre. It was an agonising wait. Each one
was asked to introduce self in front of a panel of teachers.
The actual audition took only five minutes, but the teachers
took a long time deliberating before calling the next person.
Most of them were so nervous that by the time they
stepped on stage, they were tongue-tied. Some began
stuttering, much to the disappointment of the teachers.
Those who mumbled were immediately told to leave. There
was a look of irritation on the teachers’ faces. It had been
stated that only those who could project their voices should
go for the audition.

After three hours, it was clear that one girl stood out. She
was tall and beautiful and she spoke articulately. She looked
like a seasoned stage performer. Another boy was equally

A learning encounter
Simran and her mother were descending to the ground floor
from their 10th floor flat when without warning, the lift
stopped halfway and the door would not open. It was a
terrifying moment for both of them — something they had
never experienced before. Fortunately, the light in the lift
was on or it would have been more frightening for them.

Simran’s mother had heard of people getting trapped in lifts

for hours when the electricity failed, but those incidents had
happened when the electricity system was less efficient and
lifts were not as foolproof. Besides, the light in the lift was
still on, which showed that it was not an electrical fault that
had caused the lift to stop.
Several minutes passed, but nothing happened. Simran
began to cry, but her mother said, “Don’t worry, Simran.
Something will be done to get the lift working again, I can
hear people talking outside. I’m sure they have sent for a
technician.”
After some more minutes, all of a sudden, the lift started
descending again. When they reached the ground floor, the
door opened, and as they emerged from the lift, they saw
a number of people standing around and talking. Among
them was a boy with a screw driver in his hand, grinning
at them. One of the bystanders said that the boy, Raju, had
got the lift working again and he had done so once before
too.

was in working order. But when he heard that a boy had done
something to get it working again, he was very angry. He said

meddle with the working of a lift.

9. Why was Simran and her mother’s experience less

terrifying than it could have been ?

B. There was an alarm button for them to press.
C. They were not left in total darkness.

Mental Ability  q=9
1. (B) 16x2 – 72xy + 81y2 – 12x + 27y here k = 0 is the only possible value because
= (4x)2 – 2(4x)(9y) + (9y)2 – 3 (4x – 9y) if k = 1 then q must be either – 2 or 20.

= (4x – 9y)2 – 3(4x – 9y) but neither – 2 nor 20 is possible because q

is a single positive digit i.e., q  1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
= (4x – 9y) (4x – 9y – 3) 6, 7, 8, 9, 0

5 persons  shawls  1 day

3. (B) Let  BAC = xo, 180

1 person  shawls  1 day
In  ADC, AD = DC, 12  5
  ACD = xo = 3 shawls

  BDC = xo + xo = 2xo  6 persons  6  3 shawls  1 day

In  BDC, DC = BC,  6 persons  6  3  15 shawls  15 days

  DBC = 2xo = 270 shawls

In  ABC, AB = AC, Reasoning
6. (D) Figure 1 is rotated 90o to give figure 2.
  ACB = 2xo
Also  BAC +  ABC +  ACB = 180o
(angles of a triangle)
 xo + 2xo + 2xo = 180o
 xo = 36o
  BAC = 36o Similarly, figure 3 can be rotated to give

14  9 = 126 ; 21  9 = 189 ; 19  9 = 171
We get 8 + p = q
Now if 13q7 is divisible by 11 then 8. (B) Except option (B), all the figures are obtained
