SPECIES OF BIRDS IN HONDURAS

Honduras has a great diversity of birds, The avifauna of Honduras included a total of 766
species as of August 2015, according to La Asociación Hondureña de Ornitología (ASHO).
Between that date and July 2020, an additional 21 species have been added from Bird
Checklists of the World and one as a result of a split.

Hummingbird (Honduran Emerald)

The Honduran emerald (Amazilia luciae) is a species of hummingbird in the family
Trochilidae.
This bird is found only in Honduras.
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest and subtropical or tropical dry
shrubland.
It is threatened by habitat loss, and deforestation. The species is locally common in arid thorn
forest and scrub in the upper Rio Aguan valley, Department of Yoro. The Honduran Emerald
is found in thorn forests near shrubs and cacti species because they are used for floral
resources, feeding, and nesting. The species has also been observed to feed on vines, herbs,
epiphytes, and parasites. Exploration of the less-accessible interior of Honduras has revealed a
wider distribution than thought at the time of its "rediscovery," including frequent sightings in
the Santa Barbara department.
American Pygmy Kingfisher
The American pygmy kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea) is a resident breeding kingfisher which occurs in
the American tropics from southern Mexico south through Central America to western Ecuador, and
then around the northern Andes cordillera in the east to central Bolivia and central Brazil. The species
occupies the entire Amazon basin and the Tocantins River drainage adjacent in Pará state Brazil. It
also occurs on Trinidad.

Fulvous Owl
The fulvous owl (Strix fulvescens), or Guatemala barred owl, is a resident of the cloud forests of
Central America. A medium-sized true owl, it has a round head, lacking ear tufts. Typical coloration is
warm dark brown or reddish brown on the back and lighter brown on the front with darker barring.
Adults weigh approximately 600 grams (21 oz), with females being heavier. Its distribution is limited
to highland regions of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. It inhabits elevations from 1,200 to
3,100 meters (3,900 to 10,200 ft), and is fairly common within its range. Its behavior is poorly known,
as are its population size and distribution. It is classified as a species of least concern by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature, although it is considered endangered in Mexico.
Ocellated Quail
The ocellated quail (Cyrtonyx ocellatus) is a species of bird in the family Odontophoridae. It is found in
El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Its natural habitats are subtropical or
tropical moist montane forests and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland. It is threatened by
habitat loss. It is extremely similar to the Montezuma quail, and some authorities consider them to be
conspecific.

Bushy Crested Jay

The bushy-crested jay (Cyanocorax melanocyaneus) is a species of bird in the family Corvidae. It is
found in Central America, where its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests
and heavily degraded former forest. There are two subspecies, C. m. melanocyaneus which is found in
Guatemala and southern El Salvador, and C. m. chavezi from Honduras and northeastern Nicaragua
