LEATHER EXPORT PERFORMANCE OF INDIA IN COMPARISON
WITH CHINA
India and China are two of the world's biggest exporters of leather products. However, there
are some notable differences between the two countries in terms of their export
performance. Here is a comparative study of India's export performance of leather products
in comparison with China:
1. Market Share
China is currently the world's largest exporter of leather products, accounting for
approximately 22% of the global market share. In contrast, India ranks as the second largest
exporter of leather
products, accounting for almost 10% of the world's market share.
2. Exports Value
In terms of the value of exports, China continues to lead the market with a total of US$5.2
billion in leather exports, while India exported US$1.67 billion in 2019.
3. Products
China is known for its specialization in the production of high-end and luxury leather
products such as shoes, bags, and belts. In contrast, India has a wider range of leather
products, including garments, accessories, and finished leather. India also has a strong
presence in the production
of low-cost leather products.
4. Domestic Consumption
In India, the demand for leather products is largely driven by the domestic market.
India's growing middle-class population is driving demand for leather products, especially
in the footwear sector. In contrast, China has a larger focus on exporting its products to
overseas
markets rather than catering to domestic demand.
18
5.Quality Standards
China is known for producing high-quality leather products, offering consistency in
quality, design, and production. India, on the other hand, is still working towards
improving its
quality standards to meet global expectations.
Overall, while China continues to dominate the global leather market, India offers a more
diversified range of products at cheaper prices. Both countries have their strengths and
weaknesses and offer unique opportunities for businesses looking to export leather products.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF LEATHER EXPORTS BETWEEN
INDIA AND OTHER ASIAN COUNTRIES
• India hold 4th position in world trade ranking in terms of leather exports. It is one of
the largest employer in India under skilled and semi-skilled category of workers
and also largest foreign exchange earner.
• The study has been taken to figure the current industry scenario and its position vis-
à- vis world trade industry.
• An in-depth study was undertaken to analyse and interpret the current export trend
of Indian leather under various heads and sectors. Data were collected as per sector
wise export to different EU. In light of the trend found from the data an
analysis for preliminary screening was done. Countries like U.K, France import
more of footwear over other countries, while Italy imports finished leathers sheets

CONCLUSION
Market for leather industry is diverse in nature. Almost all countries require leathers and
leather products. But requirements are different in terms of sector, quality, price etc., among
different countries. Before exporting, we need to analyze the trend prevailing in a specific

environmental factors like physical, political and economic condition prevailing in a
particular country.Indian Leather industry, which is categorized into small-scale industry, is
a labor-intensive industry. The industry needs a lot of skilled technicians who can produce
good quality products together with better and innovative designs. We need to focus our
attention on a particular country specifically and study its market extensively and
