Teenage parenthood is often seen as a intimate topic, but perhaps it’s time to
break the mold. In our world where unexpected twists and turns can happen
anytime, teenage pregnancy should not be normalized but it should be
supported with policies that will encourage them to realize their mistakes. It’s
time to start treating teenage parenthood as a invalid part of the human
journey especially when she’s still young and improving.
Firstly, teen mothers face greater risks for physical and mental health issues,
poverty and homelessness, and educational and career difficulties. It have
shown that teen mothers are 3 times more likely to die during childbirth or
from complications from childbirth. It’s because of their weak and still
developing body. This increase the chance of giving them negative effects of
pregnancy and also their offspring.
Secondly, teen mothers have a higher risk of substance use, abuse, and
dependency issues. It is also have shown that teen mothers are 3 to 4 times
more likely to develop substance use or dependency issues, compared to
teen girls who did not become pregnant. It is because as the first reason
teenage mothers are still improving and balancing what life must be. They’ still
depend on their parents because they’re financially unstable.
Thirdly, teen mothers can struggle with self-esteem and self image issues.
Several studies have shown that teen mothers can have a more negative self-
image and self-esteem, and they are more likely to fall into depression. This
proves that we should not normalize teenage pregnancy to prevent further
issues of suicide and any other self harm cases. It all affect their baby and
especially the mother itself.
In conclusion, teenage pregnancy should not be normalized but we should
create policies to support them and offer the resources and support that
young parents need to build strong, healthy families. Let’s not normalize
teenage parenthood whether its accidentally or not but let us create the
environment of support and acceptance they need.
