A. INTRODUCTION.
NAME OF THE HOSPITAL.

Benjamin Mkapa Ultramodern Hospital
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Benjamin Mkapa Ultramodern Hospital is a tertiary hospital providing specialized and super
specialized services. Establishment of the Benjamin Mkapa Ultramodern Hospital emanates from
intention of the fourth President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete,
to have a hi-tech and ultramodern diagnostic and treatment center in Tanzania by 2015. The
decision was prompted by; inter alia, the need to provide quality super and specialized health
services, which are not offered in the country, thus reducing Government burden resulting from
referring patients abroad.
The Benjamin Mkapa Ultramodern Hospital is a center of excellence for medical services in
terms of diagnosis and treatment specifically for nephrology (kidney transplant and
hemodialysis), Endoscopic services, urology, cardiology and open-heart surgery, general
surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic and neurosurgery, oncology, hematology and
Bone marrow transplant, internal medicines, nuclear medicine and Telemedicine. Furthermore,
the Institute provide training and carry out research in various areas of public health concern.
TYPE OF THE HOSPITAL
The Hospital is registered as a public hospital with the registration number of 111 8 4 Il 3 and
has bed capacity of 400 beds and serve both in and out patients from within and outside the
country. The Hospital provides a broad spectrum of services including emergency medicine,
Intensive Care Unit (ICU), imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized
Tomography Scan (CT scan), Mammography, X-ray, Ultrasound, Gamma Camera, angiography,
Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT), Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography
(SPECT/CT), Cath lab, Gamma Knife, Laboratory services (Biochemistry, Virology,
Microbiology) Non-invasive Surgical Services and radiotherapy services. To ensure the Hospital
performs its duty effectively and in an efficient manner, it has been established as a corporate
body.

Under the management structures we have the Board of trustees (Board chair person and
other members), Executive Committee (Hospital Directors and head of Units), and
Management committee (Directors, head of Units, head of sections).

Benjamin Mkapa Hospital is located in Dodoma the capital city of Tanzania. It is about 16 km
from city Centre of Dodoma. It is situated at an elevation of 1120m above sea level. The weather
of Dodoma has 27ocs wind East at 16 km per hour and 50% humidity.

B. GOALS/ OBJECTIVES
i. To provide high quality medical care of out-patients and in-patients as a tertiary
specialized referral hospital.
ii. To Implement and promote programs for the improvement or advancement of health and
general welfare of the people.
iii. To including provide conducive environment and facilitate the training of health
personnel research by universities of health and allied sciences or any other health
training institution.
iv. To provide to provide advisory consultancy and other services to the Government
organization and individuals with respect to the orderly development of medical services,
health and general welfare amenities in the country.
