Factors Influencing Social Media on Mental Health among Grade 7 Learners

of CAMBITU National High School

CHAPTER II

Review Related Literature

This chapter provides a review of related literature that explores the factors

relevant to the research study. The literature review aims to examine the knowledge

and research findings on the usage of social media, impact if social media, impact of

social media on mental health, relationship between social media use and mental health,

and mental health.

Usage of Social Media

According to Gupta C. (2022), The impression of the link between social networks

and intellectual health holds a strong emphasis on adolescent and professional

perspectives, although there is little research that underlies these beliefs. Ethical social

media use can increase opportunities for connection and communication, boosting one's

self-esteem, promoting one's health, and getting access to crucial medical information.

Despite rising evidence of the harmful impacts of social media on adolescent mental

health, there is still a paucity of empirical research on how teenagers understand social

media, notably as a body of wisdom, or how they can use the larger modern media

discourses to voice an opinion. According to P Yamini, et al. (2022) In today’s world,

many of us rely on social media. Though each has its benefits spending too much time

on social media can lead to many mental health issues. There was a negative
relationship between social media addiction and mental health status and using

excessive social media has negative effect which is influencing academic performance.

Social Media sites are well-liked forums where people with mental illness may exchange

personal stories, look for information, and encourage one another. There are major

gaps in the accessibility, effectiveness, and reach of evidence-based mental health care

in the US and around the world. Social Media platforms could provide new ways to

close these gaps. We specifically discuss current research on social media use among

mental health service users and early efforts using social media for the delivery of

evidence -based programs. However, care is necessary as multiple studies indicate

hazards associated with social media use for mental health. We also go over the

dangers, possible consequences, and essential safety measures when it comes to using

social media for mental health (Naslund, et al. 2020). Young people and school

students are often identified as the group most affected by mental illness and turn to

social media to disrupt their studies. (Kessler & Ustun, 2008)

Impact of Social Media

According to Buzenki , Social media has changed the way we interact with our

fellow human beings, and this is especially true for those of a traditional high school

age. Our stage in life and our age at introduction to social media can’t help but have

some influence on the ways in which we are impacted. The arrival on the scene of

Social Media means that traditional high school students today have not known life
without the existence of social media. Web-based social networking is an online

association site where individuals cooperate to construct, offer and change their

thought and remarks with respect to any data. During the previous decade, online long

range social networking communication has caused significant changes in the manner

individuals convey and cooperate. It included questions on demographical information,

the pattern of social networking usage, social relationship and health effects (M Deepa

et al, 2020). According to Safitri, et al.(2023). advances in technology combined with

the emergence of the proliferation of social media have facilitated public access to all

information to find out. Students are active users of technology and social media. As

active users, many students are exposed to social media which can cause worry and

fear if they experience similar incidents in the future, causing stress and mental health

problems. Concerns over social media's impact on mental health have grown as these

platforms become more and more essential to contemporary communication. This

analysis takes into account both advantages and disadvantages, highlighting the need

for a comprehensive knowledge. The opportunity for social support, community

development, and knowledge sharing are positive elements. On the other hand, there is

a darker side that includes things like social comparison, cyberbullying, and addiction

potential. Maintaining mental health requires finding equilibrium in this ever-changing

environment. Setting limits on social media use, creating a healthy online community,

and encouraging mindfulness to lessen the impact of potentially upsetting content are

some strategies for reaching this balance(Dixit, R. & Rajaura, S., 2023).

In addition, Senekal et al (2022) discovered that the increased usage of social

media platforms for communication by students especially to the adolescents speaks to

a significant role for these sites in the formation of the minds of adolescents and social

groups.

Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

According to Martisen (2008) Social networking is an important part of

safeguarding our mental health. Mental health, health behavior, physical health, and

mortality risk are all affected by the quantity and quality of social contacts. The effects

of social media on mental health are complex, as different goals are served by different

behaviors and different outcomes are produced by distinct patterns of use (Baddeley,

2010).Young people are more exposed to social media such as Facebook and the risk of

mental health problems is also high. (Jeoung et al, 2014). Research conducted by

Bashir and Bhat (2017) revealed that stress on students' mental health negatively

affects students' mental health. Social networking sites are growing day by day and it

helps to surf in different ways and build relationships with peers, school friends, and

people with common interests. They explained in their study that the reason people

suffer from mental health problems is that they use more social media (Deepa & Priya,

2020). In addition, Social media have become increasingly integrated into the daily lives

of adolescents. There are concerns about the potential detrimental effects of

adolescents' social media use (SMU) on their mental health. Mental health was

measured by depressive symptoms and life satisfaction. Findings from random intercept

cross-lagged panel models showed a direct unidirectional association between SMU

problems and mental health (Lydymilla et al, 2023).

Relationship between Social media use and Mental Health

Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between social media use

and mental health outcomes. Some studies have suggested that social media use is

associated with negative mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety (Lin,

2011). One potential explanation for these mixed findings is that the relationship

between social media use and mental health outcomes is complex and multifaceted. For

example, social media use may have different effects depending on the individual’s age,

gender, and the type of social media platform used (Seabrook et al., 2016). Additionally,

the content of social media use may be important; exposure to negative content on

social media may lead to negative mental health outcomes (Tandoc et al., 2015).

However, Kross et al (2013) stated that other studies have found no significant

relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes. The potential

advantage of making it easier to maintain friendships and networks, both of which can

be crucial for preserving a positive sense of identity when using social media. The

prevalence of social media has increased due to its numerous hazards, making it even

more crucial to create and provide preventative and therapeutic mental health care

services. (Senekal et al, 2022).

Mental Health

Mental health problems can affect many areas of students’ lives, reducing their

quality of life, academic achievement, physical health, and satisfaction with their

experience, and negatively impacting relationships with friends and family members.

Eisenberg et al (2007). Eisenberg et al (2009) also stated that Mental health problems

can affect a student’s energy level, concentration, dependability, mental ability, and

optimism, hindering performance.

Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension; it can come from any event or

thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous (Medline Plus, 2020).

Furthermore, some studies discuss whether anxiety has been shown to have a strong

correlation with excessive usage of social media. It would seem that those who

experience social anxiety or who spend a significant amount of time alone are more

likely to prefer and actively seek out social relationships through online platforms such

as social media. It's been shown that those who spend a lot of time alone are more

likely to engage in potentially harmful activities online. It is necessary to do more

research to ascertain the degree to which social anxiety, feelings of isolation, and the

usage of social media is associated (O’Day & Heimberg, 2021).
