1.5 High speed motor yachts

1.5.1 A high speed motor yacht is a yacht with a full load displacement not more than:

∆ = (0.13 L BW) 1.5 [tonnes]

And capable of maximum speed v0 equal to or exceeding the design speed:

vHSC = 7.16 Δ1/6 [knots] (according to Figure 1)

where:

∆ = displacement corresponding to the design waterline [tonnes]

L = overall length of the underwater watertight envelope of the rigid hull excluding appendages, at or
below the design water line in the displacement mode with no lift or propulsion machinery active [m]
BW = moulded breadth of the design waterline [m].

2.2 Additional ship type notation

A passenger yacht built according to the requirements of this chapter will be given one of the notations as
described in Table 2, see also Pt.1 Ch.2 Sec.3.

Table 2 Ship type notations for passenger yachts

Class notation Description

PY0 Notation for yachts engaged in trade operating in an unlimited area not including the polar regions,
fulfilling the respective requirements defined in the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part B.

PY1 Notation for yachts operating on a prescribed international voyage which is a voyage during which
the yacht is not more than 200 nautical miles from a port or place in which the passengers and crew
could be placed in safety and within a geographical area which limits the length of the voyage to a
maximum of 1000 nautical miles from the initial point of departure, as specified in any certificate
issued in accordance with the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part B with respect to the ship, fulfilling the
respective requirements defined in the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part B.

PY2 Notation for yachts operating in an area which is within 60 nautical miles of a safe haven and not more
than 20 nautical miles from land in weather conditions not exceeding wind force 6 and sea state 5 on the
Beaufort scale, fulfilling the respective requirements defined in the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part B.

PY3 Notation for pleasure yachts not engaged in trade operating in an unlimited area not including the polar
regions, fulfilling the respective requirements defined in the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part B.
Pleasure yacht shall have the meaning assigned to the term pleasure vessel as defined in the national
legislation of the REG Member State implementing the provisions of the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code
Part B.

2.3 Additional class notations

Passenger yachts having special equipment or systems found to satisfy relevant requirements in Pt.6 may be
given corresponding additional class notations, e.g. RIG.

2.4 Service area restrictions

A yacht with the class notation Passenger may be given one of the following service restrictions R0, R1, R3
or RE as defined in Pt.1 Ch.2 Sec.5.
Guidance note:
Passenger yachts, which due to their overall design, are only suitable for service in defined waterways (e.g. RE) will in no case be
assigned an extended navigation notation to the character of classification, even if the strength of the hull is sufficient for a wider
range of service (e.g. R3). In that event, this may be requested expressed in the class certificate by adding the following note:
'The strength of the hull structural elements complies with the service range ...'.
