Lesson 1

What is Contemporary Arts? Is it the same with Modern Arts?

Contemporary Arts- refers to current and very recent practice. Period from the 1970’s to the
present and the works of arts made by living artist. It also described in terms of Post
Modernism.

Modern Art- refers to the period began with the Enlightenment in the 17 th century. Period from
Pre-conquest, Spanish Period (1521-1898), American (1898-1940), Japanese (1941-1945) up to
Post War Republic (1946-1969).

Contemporary art is distinguishable from modern arts in terms of:

*Historical
*Stylistic
*Cultural

To study and appreciate the contemporary is to experience and understand art as a window to
Philippine contemporary life.

Lesson 2
Characteristics of Contemporary Arts

A. Integrative- the artist is free to integrate any medium and any form of style in order to express
their artistic intention. Integrates historical and pop subject matter.
Example: The Ronald Ventura’s work “The Battle of the Century” –a grey ground art

B. Processed-Based- emphasizes on how the artist starts not with a final product in mind but
instead begins the development of a concept and then subsequently proceeds with realizing the
idea.

C. Site-Specific- allows an artwork’s meaning to have direct relationship to a specific location


where it is seen or experience. It cannot be experienced in same way if removed from their
original places of exhibit.
Example: Nagtahan Bridge (Between Pureza and Legarda Station), Rizal Monument in Luneta
Park, Leyte Landing Monument, Lapu-Lapu Monument in Mactan Shrine and Bonifacio
Monument in Caloocan City

D. Collaborative- an art wherein the end product is created with the involvement of two or more
artists.
Example: The artwork of Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan

E. Installation- the method in which the artist is not restricted to a 2-Dimensional plane. It is an
artistic genre of 3-Dimensional works that often are site specific and designed to transform the
perception of the space.
Example: Some works in the site-specific and collaborative, Patty Eustaquio

F. Mixed-media- the technique that uses different materials in the creation of an artwork.
Example: Mixed-media on wood and mixed-media on canvas by Jun Cambel, Filipina DH by
Imelda C. Endaya

G. Interactive- recognizes how audience has the potential to change or add the meaning of an
artwork.

H. Performance Art- an art form where the artist executes an artwork in front of a live audience.
Example: Theater or Stage Play, Opera, Musical Play

The most common characteristic of contemporary art revolves around their being site-specific, process-
based, collaborative and interactive.

A. Filipino Modern Artists

1. Carlos “Botong” V. Francisco (November 4, 1912-March 31, 1969)

* Angono, Rizal
*son of Felipe Francisco and Maria Villaluz
*a muralist known for his historical pieces
*discover the Angono Petroglyphs in 1965
*died because of Tuberculosis
*National Artist-Painting in 1973

2. Cesar T. Legaspi (April 2, 1917- April 7, 1994)

*Tondo, Manila
*art style or movements are cubism and neorealism
*son of Manuel Legaspi and Rosario Torrente
*had his first one-man show at the Luz Gallery in 1963
*worked as magazine illustrator and artistic director
*an active member of Art Association of the Phils.
*married to Betty with 5 children
*National Artist-Painting in 1990
*died because of prostate cancer (76 y.o)

3. Fernando C. Amorsolo (May 30, 1892- April 24, 1972)


*Paco, Manila
*known as “Grand Old Man of the Philippine Art
*nephew of Don Fabian dela Rosa, his mother’s cousin
*brother of Pablo Amorsolo
*first painting was “Levendo Periodico” took 2 nd place at the Bazar Escolta contest
organized by the Association International de Artistas
*did illustrations for various Philippine Publications
*a portraitist and rural painter of rural Philippine landscapes
*National Artist-Painting in 1970

4. Hernando R. Ocampo (April 18, 1911- December 28, 1978)


*Santa Cruz, Manila
*son of Emilio Ocampo and Delfina Ruiz
*worked as a writer in various periodicals (taliba and Manila Sunday Chronicle)
*a scriptwriter and director for the television
*a producer and director for the Filipino Players Guild
*fiction, playwright, editing and visual artist
*National Artist-Painting and Literature in 1991
*died at the age of 67

5. Romeo V. Tabuena (August 22, 1921- October 15, 2015)


*Iloilo City
*a painter and printmaker
*had been listed in Who’s Who in American Art and International Who’s Who of
Intellectuals
*appeared on History of International Art-Italy, and on the International Book of Honor,
America’s Biographic Institute.
*included in 5000 Personalities of the World
*recipient of various awards and citations in Cambridge, England

*died at the age of 94

Washington, D.C.
* Carabao, a watercolor painting on paper (1950) at the Honolulu Museum of Arts

6. Vicente Manansala (January 22, 1910- August 22, 1981)


*Macabebe, Pampanga
*masterpieces describe the culture of the barrio and the city together
*an illustrator and cubist painter
*National Artist-Painting in 1981
*died due to lung cancer at the age of 71

7. Victorio C. Edades (December 23, 1895-March 7, 1985)


*Dagupan, Pangasinan
*youngest son of the 10 children of Hilario and Cecilia Edades
*led the revolutionary Thirteen Moderns
*known as the “Father of Modernism in Phil. Arts”
*dubbed as “apprentice teacher “in the art class of his teacher during his seventh grade
*National Artist-Painting in 1976

8. Ang Kiukok (March 1, 1931-May 9, 2005)


*Davao
*son of Vicente Ang and Chin Lim
*from Xiamen China
*taught by a commercial artist
*making movie billboards
*one of his mentors is Vicente Manansala
*genre influenced from cubism, surrealism, expressionism
*National Artist of Visual Arts in 2001
*died at aged 74 from cancer
*subjects are like fighting locks rabid dogs; and people on raptured by rage or bound in
chains
