SYNOPSIS
Sports has always been a part of India’s society but the idea of taking sports as a
career has gained recognition only in the past few decades. Evidently, sports was
treated as co-curricular activity and not main stream with limited chances to go
professional. Nevertheless, this perception is changing because India is
increasingly becoming aware of its sports industry’s untapped potential. The
purpose of this paper is to examine how multi-faceted careers in sport are
emerging within India, as underlined by significant factors that have contributed
to these changes.
The essay begins with reviewing the historical development of Indian sports
which explains why current sporting culture looks like it does now. It later
proceeds to discuss different sport popularity levels ranging from being highly
favoured in cricket to its increased application in football, badminton or kabaddi
among other regional sports. Additionally, this study analyses the role
governments and institutions play to ensure that talents are developed and
infrastructures improved with initiatives such as “Khelo India” and “Target
Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)” being considered.
There are however various challenges faced by aspiring athletes who want to
make it big in their respective fields even though there exist growing opportunities
for them.
