2. SRIDHAR VEMBU: THE MAN BEHIND ZOHO

Sridhar Vembu, born in 1968 in a Tamil Brahmin family in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu,
India, is an influential figure in the software industry. He graduated with a bachelor's degree
in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, before earning his
MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University. Vembu's academic
background laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors in technology and
entrepreneurship.

Vembu began his career as a wireless engineer at

Qualcomm in San Diego, California, later moving
to the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1996, he co-
founded AdventNet with his two brothers, a
company that was renamed Zoho Corporation in
2009. Zoho focuses on providing Software as a
Service (SaaS) solutions for customer relationship
management. In 2019, Vembu relocated to Tenkasi,
India, and by 2020, he held an 88% stake in the
company. According to Forbes, he is the 39th
richest person in India, with a net worth of $5.85
billion as of 2024. In recognition of his
contributions to society, he was awarded the Padma
Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honor, in 2021.

As a social entrepreneur, Vembu is committed to moving software development jobs from

urban centers to rural areas in India. His company established offices in Mathalamparai,
Tenkasi, and Renigunta, Andhra Pradesh, to support this initiative. In 2004, he founded
Zoho Schools, which provides vocational training in software development, offering an
alternative to traditional university education. Notably, around 15-20% of Zoho's engineers
have graduated from these schools. In 2020, he announced a "rural school startup" focused
on delivering free primary education, further emphasizing his dedication to education and
community development.

Vembu has also faced political controversies, particularly regarding his association with the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization. His attendance at a
high-profile RSS event in January 2020 drew criticism, but he defended his participation as a
matter of personal choice. This aspect of his life highlights the complexities of balancing
personal beliefs and public perceptions in the business world.

3. COMPANY BACKGROUND

3.1 History and Founding of Zoho

Zoho Corporation traces its roots back to 1996 when it was founded as AdventNet by
Sridhar Vembu, Tony Thomas, and a few dedicated engineers. Operating out of humble
locations—an apartment in Chennai, India, and a bedroom office in New Jersey, USA—the
company’s vision was to build smart technology that helps businesses operate more
efficiently. Initially focused on providing telecom network management solutions,
AdventNet's early days were driven by a simple goal: to stay afloat and generate enough
revenue to sustain operations.
In 1997, Sridhar Vembu officially joined the company, focusing on sales and marketing. The
company’s first significant breakthrough came from a booth at the NetWorld+Interop trade
show in Las Vegas, where they managed to secure their first sales contracts. By 1998,
AdventNet had achieved over $1 million in revenue, and the focus began shifting towards
product innovation and R&D.
In the early 2000s, the company faced a critical turning point with the collapse of the telecom
market following the dot-com crash and the events of September 11. This led to a strategic
pivot, where AdventNet began diversifying into IT management software with the launch of
ManageEngine in 2002. However, the real game-changer came in 2005 when Zoho.com was
launched, marking their foray into cloud-based business software. The company rebranded
itself to Zoho Corporation in 2009 to reflect this new direction.
