Physics 30 Impulse and Momentum Assignment

1. A 0.149 kg baseball traveling at 28 m/s due south approaches a waiting batter.

The ball is hit and momentarily crushed; it springs back, sailing away at 46 m/s
due north. Determine the magnitude of the change in the balls momentum.

2. A rocket fires its engine, which exerts an average force of 1000 N for 40 s in a
fixed direction. What is the magnitude of the rocket’s momentum change?

3. On Sept 12, 1966 a Gemini spacecraft piloted by astronauts Conrad and Gorden
met and docked with an orbiting Agena launch vehicle. With plenty of fuel left in
the spacecraft, NASA decided to determine the mass of the Agena. While
coupled, Gemini’s motor as fired, exerting a constant thrust of 89 N in a fixed
direction for 7.0 s. As a result of that little nudge, the Gemini-Agena sped up by
0.93 m/s. Assuming Gemini’s mass a constant 340 kg, compute the mass of the
Agena

4. A 70 kg passenger riding in a typical automobile is involved in a 17.9 m/s head-

on collision with a concrete barrier. Taking the stopping time as 100 ms, compute
the average force exerted by the seat belt and shoulder strap on the person.
5. A rocket engine testing a low-power fuel expels 5.0 kg of exhaust gas per second.
If these molecules are ejected at an average speed of 12 km/s, what is the thrust of
the engine?

6. Explain what is meant by the term “isolated system”

7. During a rainy day football game a player with a weight of 845 N is standing
holding the ball when he is hit by another player of weight 1281 N who was
traveling at 6.1 m/s. At what speed do the two players who are all tangled up
move together at?

8. This is a multiple choice question, and you need to justify your response. A
75.0 kg astronaut wearing a 25.0 kg spacesuit while floating in space fires a little
gas jet that shoots out a blast of 10.0 g of gas at 100m/s. He in turn
A) moves in the opposite direction at 100 m/s
B) moves in the opposite direction at 10.0 m/s
C) moves in the opposite direction at 1.0 m/s
D) moves in the opposite direction at 0.1 m/s
E) moves in the same direction as the gas
F) none of these
9. Two astronauts floating at rest with respect to their ship decide to play catch with
a 0.500 kg asteroid. Neil (whose mass is 100 kg) heaves the asteroid at 20.0 m/s
toward Sally (whose mass is 50.0 kg) She catches it and heaves it back at 20.0 m/s
(with respect to the ship). Before Neil catches it a second time, how fast is each
person moving, and in what direction?

10. A 2500 kg truck crashes into the wall at 40 km/h, and comes to a stop in 0.80 s.
What is the average force on the truck?

11. A 5 kg rifle fire identical bullets of mass 0.020 kg with a muzzle velocity of 520
m/s. What is the recoil velocity of the bullets

12. A 70 kg man steps horizontally from a 300 kg boat onto a dock with a velocity of
4.00 m/s. At what velocity will the boat move away from the dock?

13. A run away car of mass 1200 kg mass rolls down a hill onto a level road at 18.0
m/s. To stop the car, a 4000 kg truck will be used. It will meet the car in a head-
on collision. What should the truck’s velocity be so that both vehicles stop after
the collision?
14. A 60.0 kg boy is rolling on roller-blades at 8.0 m/s, when he catches a ball
moving towards of mass 0.60 kg, moving at 30.0 m/s What is his velocity after
he catches the ball?

15. A 1500 kg car travelling at 15 m/s overtakes a 1200 kg car travelling at 12 m/s
and collides with it. If both cars stick together, what is their final velocity?

16. A 1 kg stone moving at 3 m/s south collides with a 5.0 kg mudball moving east at
1.4 m/s, and becomes embedded in the mudball. Determine the velocity
(magnitude and direction) of both objects after their impact

17. A 0.80 kg ball travelling at 7 m/s collides head-on with a 1.00 kg ball moving at
12.0 m/s in the opposite direction. The 0.80 kg ball moves away at 14.0 m/s in
the direction of the 1.00 kg ball after the collision. Find the velocity of the 1.00
kg ball after the collision.
18. An 8.0 kg ball is moving at a velocity of 15 m/s. It collides with a stationary ball
of equal mass. After the collision, the originally moving ball moves off at a
direction of 20 to the left of its original path, and the stationary ball moves off at
70 to the right of the first’s ball original path

a) Draw the vector diagram of situation?[2]

b) What is the speed of each ball after the collision? [3]

19. After measuring and evaluating skid marks, police were able to determine that
Car #1, of mass 765 kg, was traveling at 70.0 km/h just after the impact. Car #2,
of mass 1100 kg, was determined to be moving at 41.0 km/h just after impact. In
analyzing this accident scene, it is important for police to establish the velocity of
each car just before impact. Describe in detail and show how the police
investigator would calculate the velocities of both cars just before collision.
