Introduction
Language Teaching Methods

As you embark on your journey of becoming

proficient language teachers, it's crucial to
understand the tools at your disposal—
language teaching methods. These methods
are like keys that unlock the doors to
successful language learning experiences.
Let's explore why they matter and why you
should grasp their significance.
What are Language Teaching Methods?
Language teaching methods are systematic
approaches that educators use to guide the
process of teaching and learning a new
language. Think of them as different paths to
reach the same destination - becoming
fluent in the language you're learning. Just as
a skilled craftsman selects the right tool for
the job, language teachers choose methods
that best suit their learners' needs and
learning goals.
What are Language Teaching Methods?

It's important to note that there is no single

"best" or "worst“ method. Each method has
its strengths and weaknesses, and its
suitability depends on various factors such as
learners’ needs, goals, and the context of
learning
Why are Language Teaching Methods important?
Learning about language teaching methods is a
crucial and exciting step for those of you
aspiring to become teachers, and even if you
don't, you'll gain insights into your own learning
preferences and discover what works best for
you. This knowledge will empower you to adapt
to different teaching styles and become a more
effective language learner.
Why are Language Teaching Methods important?
As we explore each teaching method,
remember that there's no one-size-fits-all
approach to language learning. Every
method has its merits, and the most
successful language teachers and learners
often draw from various methods to
create their own unique teaching/learning
journey.

Let’s review!
Reasons for Learning
Some students need English for a Specific
Purpose (ESP). Such students of ESP may

need to learn legal language, or the language
of tourism, banking or nursing, for example.
An extremely popular strand of ESP is the
teaching of business English, where students
learn about how to operate in English in the
business world. Many students need English
for Academic Purposes (EAP) in order to study
at an English-speaking university or college,
or because they need to access English-
language academic texts.
Reason 2
Many people learn English because they think
it will be useful in some way for international
communication and travel. Such students of
general English often do not have a particular
reason for going to English classes, but simply
wish to learn to speak (and read and write)
the language effectively for wherever and
whenever this might be useful for them.
The purposes students have for learning will have Examples:
an effect on what it is they want and need to
learn - and as a result will influence what they are
taught.
• Business English students, for example, will
want to spend a lot of time concentrating on
the language needed for specific business
transactions and situations.
• Students living in a target-language
community will need to use English to achieve
their immediate practical and social needs.
Examples: • A group of nurses will want to study the kind of
English that they are likely to have to use while
they nurse.
• Students of general English (including those
studying the language as part of their primary
and secondary education) will not have such
specific needs, of course, and so their lessons
(and the materials which the teachers use) will
almost certainly look different from those for
students with more clearly identifiable needs.
