Answer all questions.
1a) Why are curves necessary in survey? (1mrks)
b) Describe two forms of curves sketching two examples of each. (4mrks)
c) Define the following terms
i. Degree of the curve
ii. Transiting
iii. Super elevation
iv. Centering;
v. Swinging the telescope. (5marks)
d) With the aid of a sketch, show five elements of a curve. (5marks)
2. List four curve ranging equipment (2mrks)
b.) Explain three types of theodolites (3mrks)
c.) With the aid of a sketch, show that the mid-ordinate of the long chord of a simple circular
θ
curve is given by the expression R (1 - cos /2) and Apex distance is given by the expression
θ
R(Sec /2 – 1) where:
R= Radius of curve and
θ = Deviation angle. (10marks)
3. A 100 (chord basis) is introduced between straights at an intersection angle 32030’. Calculate

b. The length of the curve
c. The tangent length
d. The long chord
e. External distance
f. Mid-ordinate (10marks)
4. Two tangents intersect at Chainage 1190m the deflection angle being 360. Calculate all the
data necessary for setting out a curve with a radius of 300m by the deflection angle method. The
peg interval is 30m.
(20mrks)
5. Apex distance of a curve is 10m. The straights of the curve meets at angle of intersection of
500. Calculate the tangent length.
(5mrks)

and the radians of the circular circles.
