What this Module About
This module is about the different hazards and risk where most of us find and might
exposed in different workplace. They must learned to determine different types of its
hazards.
As they go along this module they must do the task assign on them, do different
activity and answer all assessment needed to identify hazard and risk you may encounter in
different
work place.

At work, it is important to distinguish, hazard risk, and exposure when


undertaking risk management. By Definition hazard is the potential for harm, or
adverse effect on an worker’s health. While Risk is likely having that a hazard will
cause injury or health to anyone at or near workplace. The level of risk increases
with the severity of the hazard and the duration and frequency of exposure.
Exposure occurs when a person comes into contact with the hazard.

Types of Hazard
1. Physical – includes floors, stairs, work platforms, steps, ladders, fire, falling objects,
slipper surfaces, manual handling (lifting, pushing, pulling), excessively loud and
prolonged noise, vibration, heat and cold, radiation, poor lighting, ventilation, air
quality.
2. Mechanical and/or electrical – includes electricity, machinery, equipment, pressure
vessels, dangerous goods, fork cleft, cranes, hoist.
3. Chemical – includes chemical substances such as acids or poison of those that could
lead to fire or explosion, like pesticides herbicides, cleaning agents, dusts and fumes
from various processes such as welding.
4. Biological – includes bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew, insects, vermin, animals.
5. Psychosocial environment – includes workplace stressors arising from a variety of
sources.

Factors that influence the degree of risk include :


 how much a person is exposed to a hazardous thing or condition; and
 how the person is exposed (e.g., breathing in a vapor, skin contact), how
severe are the effects under the condition of exposure.

Risk assessment is the process where you;


 Identify hazards;
 Analyze or evaluate the risk associated with that hazard
 Determine appropriate ways to eliminate or control the hazard.

Summary
Identifying Hazards and Risk in a workplace will lead to healthy workers’
environment. This lesson leads the learner to focus on proper work habit where he/she must
mindful for careful workplace, healthy, and stress free environment. While learning different
factors of hazard will lead to different degree of risk assessment and let the individual find
safety measures/action.
