Man: This set meal is really excellent value. Ten pounds for three courses and they give you so much.
Woman: Too much, really. There’s no way I’m going to be able to eat this dessert.
Man: Really? It’s delicious.
Woman: I know, but I’m completely full.
Man: I wonder if they’d pack it for you. You could eat it later.
Woman: No, I don’t like asking for food to be packed. I’d just end up throwing it away.
Man: It seems such a waste.
Woman: Well, next time I’ll order the two-course meal for £8.50.

Woman: Did you enjoy your fish?
Man: Yes, but I would have preferred a nice, juicy steak.
Woman: Why didn’t you order one, then?
Man: They only had steak with a creamy mushroom sauce. I’m not keen on sauces. I like plain food. That’s
why I chose the fish. There was nothing else I fancied.
Woman: You should have asked for the steak without the sauce.
Man: No, the chef refuses to change anything on the menu here. He’s very proud and stubborn.
Woman: So, why did you bring me here?
Man: Well, it’s a special occasion and this is the best restaurant in town. You enjoyed your meal and that’s
the main thing.

... I’m at the shopping mall, near the food hall. It’s packed as usual. Twenty huge restaurants, all selling the same
things! Families sitting with bags of shopping by their feet eating tasteless, fatty, cholesterol-filled food. I can’t
understand it. I know people say it’s cheap, but it isn’t really. You could get much better food in a real restaurant
without spending much more. The Italian restaurant has a delicious range of pasta dishes for the price of a burger and
chips. Anyway, where do you want to meet?

Woman: I’m going to cook a Middle Eastern meal today.
Man: Middle Eastern? Oh, I remember, you went to Jordan last year. Did you eat a lot of interesting things
there?
Woman: Not really. We were staying with friends in Amman. They cooked for us every evening, but, the food
we’re used to eating at home. They gave us lots of ideas about where to go and what to see in Amman
but not about food. Anyway, I hadn’t planned to cook anything Middle Eastern today. A friend
recommended cooking Spanish tapas, so I checked some recipes. Then I saw a link for mezze, which
are like tapas but more common in countries like Turkey and Lebanon. I clicked it and they looked
tasty and fairly easy, so that’s why I’m cooking them today.

Girl:So what are we going to do for Mum’s birthday?
Boy: I think she’d like a nice meal. We could cook something. I’ve got some great recipes.
Girl:For 16 people?
Boy: Sixteen! Oh, I hadn’t realised.
Girl: How about going to The Mask? It’s a lovely restaurant and their food is excellent.
Boy: They can’t fit 16 people in there. No, I think we’ll have to stay at home and cook.
Girl:No, I’ve got a better idea. We’ll have fresh fruit for starters – melons or something. Then order some
takeaways. We’ll serve the food on our best crockery and ...
Boy: ... pretend we did all the cooking. Great! She’ll be very impressed.
