CH- BADMINTON

Court and net- Court is a rectangular area marked with lines of 40


mm wide, the marked should be easily distinguishable of red or
yellow colour. The posts (on which net is been tied) shall be 1.55
metres in height from the surface of the court. The net shall of fine
cord of dark colour with a mesh not less than 15mm to 20mm. the
top of the net shall be edged with a 75mm white tape doubled over a
cord or cable which is running through the tape.

The net should be of 2.6 feet in width and 20 feet in length. the
height of the net should be 5feet 1inch at the post and it can be 5
feet at the centre.

Shuttle-the shuttle shall be of synthetic material. The shuttle shall


have 14 to 16 feathers fixed in the base, its length should be from 62
to 70 mm from tip to top. The base shall be 25mm to 28mm in
diameter and rounded on the bottom. The shuttle should weigh
between 4.74 to 5.50 gram.

Racket- the frame of racket shall not be more than 680mm/27 inches
in overall length and 230mm/9 inches in overall width. The string
area is a part of racket, the shaft connects the handle to the head.
The stringing pattern should be uniform , it shall not extend
280mm/11inches.

Toss- before the start of a match the toss is conducted, the side
winning the toss shall either make a choice to serve first or select the
end from where to receive, the other remaining choice goes to the
opponent.

Scoring system- a match consists of best of 3 games each of 21


points. The side winning a rally adds a point to its score. At 20all, the
side which gains 2 point lead wins that game. At 29 all, the side
which scores the 30th point wins that game. The side winning a game
serves first in next game.
Interval and change of ends- in first game when leading score
reaches 11 points, players get a break of 1 minute. A 2 minute
interval is allowed between each game. Players shall change their
ends after the end of 1st and 2nd game, if third game is played, when
the leading team reaches 11 points the ends will be changed. If the
ends are not changed it should be done immediately as the mistake
is discovered and when the shuttle is not in play. The existing score
shall stand.

Testing a shuttle for speed- to test the speed of shuttle, the player
should use full underhand stroke which makes contact with the
shuttle over the back boundary line. The shuttle should go at an
upward angle and in a direction parallel to the sideline. The shuttle
of correct speed will not land more than 990mm from the back
boundary line and not less than 530 mm from the back boundary
line.

Service court errors-

When a player has served or received out of turn, the error shall be
corrected and the existing score shall stand.

Faults

1. if service is not correct.(if it goes straight instead of going


diagonal
2. if shuttle is caught on the net, and remains suspended on
its top.
3. If shuttle lands outside the boundary lines.
4. If shuttle passes under the net.
5. If shuttle fails to pass over the net.
6. If shuttle goes to the alley area while singles are played.
7. If the shuttle falls before the short service line while
service.
8. If both the feet are not on the court while performing the
service or while receiving
9. Deliberately distracting an opponent by an action
10. If shuttle touches the dress of a player.

Lets

Lets shall be called by the umpire or by a player to halt play.

It shall be called let if

1. If the server serves before the receiver is ready.


2. If during play both are at fault.
3. If shuttle disintegrates and the base completely separates from
rest of the shuttle
4. If umpire feels that game is disrupted by coach of opponent
side.
5. If line judge is unsighted and umpire is unable to take decision.
6. When any unforeseen incident happens.

Service

1. Neither side shall cause undue delay when both server and the
receiver are ready.
2. The server and receiver shall stand diagonally opposite service
court without touching the boundary lines.
3. Some part of both feet should be there on the court while the
service is delivered.
4. The server’s racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle
5. The shuttle shall be below the server’s waist while service.
6. In attempting to the serve the shuttle should not miss.

Singles

1. the players shall serve and receive from right service court
when the scores are love all or even number of the server’s
side.
2. the player shall serve and receive from left service court when
the server’s score is in odd number.
3. the shuttle may be hit alternately by the server and the
receiver, from any position until the shuttle is seized to be in
play.
4. If the server wins the rally, he should again serve from the
alternate service court.
5. If the receiver wins the rally, the receiver shall score a point
and will now perform the service.

Doubles
1. The player of the serving side shall serve from right service
court when the score is love all or in even number.
2. The player of serving side shall serve from left service court
when the score is in odd number.
3. The player of the receiving side who served last shall stay in the
same service court from where he served last.
4. The player of the receiving side standing in the diagonally
position opposite to the server will now be the server.
5. The players shall not change their court until they win a point.
6. No player shall serve or receive out of turn, or receive two
consecutive service.
7. Any player of the receiving side may serve first in the next
game, any player of the losing side may receive first in the next
game.
Duties of officials

An official’s decision shall be the final decision, an umpire shall


overrule all decisions the decision of other officials like line judge.

Referees

1. Referee is the overall incharge of the tournament.


2. He ensures that tournament is conducted in accordance to the
BWF(badminton world federation) rules.
3. He also ensures that players are given adequate facilities and
playing condition of adequate standard.
4. He shall also ensure that adequate panel of technical officials
are there

Service judge

service judge shall call service faults made by the server as they
occur.

Line judge

line judge shall indicate whether a shuttle landed ‘in’ or ‘out’ of the
line by showing appropriate signal

Umpire

1. Umpire enforce the laws of badminton and calls for a FAULT or


LET.
2. Ensure that the toss is fairly conducted.
3. Ensures players and the spectators are kept informed of the
progress of the match.
4. Can appoint or replace line judge or a service judge in
consultation with the referee.
5. Ensure that no player uses any equipment or any tactics which
violates the rule of badminton.
6. Record and report to the referee all matters relating to the
continuous play, misconduct or any penalty.
7. Issuing of official warning against the player.
8. Ensures that sufficient tested shuttle cocks are available to
avoid delay.

Few terminologies related to badminton

1. Bird – another name of a shuttle cock.


2. Court- playing area enclosed with boundary lines (side lines and
end lines).
3. Let- the stopping of play due to any outside interference or if
the server serves before the receiver is ready.
4. Lob- a stroke that sends the shuttle high and deep towards the
back boundary line.
5. Smash- stroke in which shuttle is send with speed to end the
rally.
6. Rally- an exchange of shots between both teams during a
match is called rally.
7. Server- player who serves the ball to start the rally .
8. Net strokes- strokes which is executed to return a shuttle
falling close to the net.
9. Side out- when a player or a team has finished the right to
serve, and the shuttle is given to the opponent.
10. Inning- time during which player or a team holds service.
11. Match point- point if won by the server, makes him
winner of the game.
12. Rotation- rotation is used in doubles in which the players
keep on changing their positions from left to right or from right
to left.
13. Alley- 1foot 6inches wide extended on both side of the
court used in doubles.
14. Carry- illegal shot where the shuttle does not rebound
immediately off the racket when it contacts the racket.
15. Clear- high shot which falls close to the back line.
16. Cross court- a shot in which shuttle is crossed the net in a
diagonal direction.
17. Footfault- illegal positioning of the foot by server or by
receiver(touching line while serving or receiving, not placing
both the feet on court serving or reveiving).
18. Drop- when the shuttle falls close to the net in the
opponents space and is returned by a player.

Fundamental skills

1. Grips of the racket-


a) Forehand stroke- this type of stroke is played for
returning a shuttle from the right side of the court.
b) Backhand stroke- this type of stroke is played to return
the shuttle coming towards the left side of the court.
2. Dropshot- it is a very gentle stroke in which a shuttle is struck
with a forehand or backhand action.
3. Drive- it is a flat stroke in which the shuttle is sent over the net,
just clearing it and parallel to the floor.
4. Shuttle cock grip-
a) Base grip- the shuttle cock is held with the thumb and
two fingers at the base of the shuttle.
b) Mid grip- the shuttle is held with the thumb and the
fingers around the shuttle.
c) Out of hand grip- the shuttle is held with the tips of
thumb and index finger.
5. Grip of the racket- following types of grips to hold the racket.
a) Forehand grip- holding the racket by the shaft in the left
hand. Slide your hand down so that the fatty part rest
comfortably against the butt of the handle. There will be
V shape of your thumb and index finger. The fingers will
be spread apart.

b) Backhand grip- for backhand grip turn the badminton


towards right and put the thumb along. This grip allows a
longer reach, more power and better accuracy.
6. Block- block is used as defensive stroke in response to an
opponents smash. If it is effectively stroked a block can also
change defensive situation to offensive situation
.

7. Footwork- good footwork can bring more success to your


game. Footwork means basics of moving on court. Your ready
position should include standing in the centre of the court if
you are playing singles and bending your knees with body
relaxed. Move your body from left to right by lunging forward,
after hitting it from come back to centre to receive shuttle
coming at the back.
8. Forehand smash- hold the racket by forehand grip. Then turn
your body and stand sideways to the net with non-racket
shoulder facing the net, shift your body weight on your back
foot. Then bend your elbow and lock your racket wrist
preparing to swing forward. Contact the shuttle as high as
possible and in front of your body using a throwing action. Then
follow through with your racket and shift your body weight
from back foot to front foot.
