Assignment 4
Assignment 4
Assignment 4
EEG relies on the same principles that we’ve discussed for ECG and EMG. EEG signals are
characterized by their extremely small amplitudes and are difficult to interpret since they represent
the comprehensive electrical activity of billions of neurons transmitted via the brain tissues, fluids,
and scalp. The amplitude of an EEG signal is on the order of microvolts (0.001 mV) and its
primary frequency content is between 0.5 Hz and 40 Hz. Applications of EEG typically involve
sleep studies and seizure detection. In this assignment, you are to:
1. Research and write a 1 page summary on EEG and its applications. You have some
freedom here to focus on aspects of EEG that interest you. Wikipedia has a nice entry on
EEG that would serve as a good starting point (and supplement with other online materials
as necessary): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroencephalography
2. Design an appropriate instrumentation amplifier for differential amplification of 2 EEG
electrodes. Use the same instrumentation amplifier that we’ve worked through in class
(and you used in the EMG assignment). State the gain you’ve selected and the values of
all resistors.
3. Design an appropriate filter to reduce errors, noise, and other artifacts. State the cutoff
frequencies and the values of all capacitors and resistors.
