ABSTRACT

Writing in the academic community is regarded as a precise skill.

Majority of university students find writing a challenge. This research
analysed the freshmen students’ ability to write descriptive texts in the
College of Education, IFSU- Lagawe during Term 1, SY 2023-2024. The
qualitative method in research was utilized. Data was gathered from
the descriptive essays written by the participants of the study. The
data was grouped based on the following indicators: content,
grammar, vocabulary, organization, and mechanics. Out of 15
students, 14 of them had grammar errors, while five students had
errors in vocabulary and organization. The most common reasons for
the respondents' difficulty in writing descriptive texts, given by and
agreed upon by the respondents are: lack of study and exercise, and
lack of knowledge in English which had the highest percentage. The
lower percentage is attributed to lack of interest and lack of
comprehension of the text’s grammar while the lowest in percentage is
attributed to motivating one’s self to have interest in writing and
teachers paying attention to the right method in teaching students.
