1. DETAILS ON THE ACTIVITIES INVOLVED DURING
THE PROGRAMME

◻ An induction programme is the process used within many colleges to welcome

new students to the college and make students comfortable with the system of the
college.

◻ Our induction programme was on 22-07-2024 and it started with welcoming

students and parents and congratulated parents on joining their kids into one of the
prestigious university VIT. After that we all raised for the invocation.

◻ After invocation the registrar told us that the induction programme is to assist them
in the new environment and inculcate in them the ethos of the institution with a sense
of purpose.

◻ Dr.Jayabarathi introduced the dignitaries esteemed chancellor Dr.G.Viswanathan,

respected vice president Mr.Sankar Viswanathan, vice president Dr.G.V.Selvam, Vice
Chancellor Dr.Kanchana Baskaran, Provice chancellor Dr.Partha Sharathi Mallick,
Deans, Directors and faculty.

◻ The respected registrar told us that many alumni of VIT well settled in life and the
registrar told us about history, how VIT started with only 180 students and with only
three branches and now with four campuses and more than 80,000 students and top
engineering institution in india.

◻ This was followed by vice chancellor Dr.Mallick telling us about how VIT is
growing and ahead of all NITs and all new IITs and the students who came from 60
countries and the atmosphere present in college.

◻ This was followed by vice president Dr.G.V.Selvam he told about the proctor
system, placements, maintain good CGPA,do hard work and be honest.
◻ The students and parents were told about the credit and grading system, and about
the examinations. They were informed about studying in college.

◻ Different branches and courses and their respective professors were introduced.
Explanation of different branches in day-to-day technology and their importance was
told and after graduation what role the student would play in society as an engineer in
that branch was explained. We were also shown our laboratories, workshops and other
facilities.

◻ Facilities like: Gymnasium, Swimming pool, Indoor and Outdoor sports facilities,
General stores, pharmacy, Photocopier facility, Mechanized Laundry services, Food
stalls, Night canteen, Coffee shops, Shuttle Cabs, Newspaper, Study Halls, Food
SPORT stalls, Beauty Salon, Tailoring, Shoe repair.

FACILITIES LIKE:
INDOOR GAMES –Squash court –Football ground –Badminton court –Volleyball
court –Table tennis –Cricket ground Basketball court–Tennis court .

◻ The hostel Dean told about the rules such as: Students should strictly follow the
guidelines of hostels accepted jointly by both parents and students.

◻ Silence should be strictly maintained between 9pm to 6 am.

◻ Students are personally responsible to safeguard their belongings

◻ Students will not be permitted to keep any electrical appliances (cooking

equipment, kettle, iron boxes etc.) inside the rooms for safety reasons. If found they
will be confiscated and imposed with a fine.

◻ Any physical/mental harassment towards fellow students including ragging,

quarreling, using abusive words and violent behavior is strictly prohibited
FULLY FLEXIBLE CREDIT SYSTEM(FFCS):

This is to be done in 2nd sem. Students will be able to prepare their own timetable
and preferred courses will be guided as per requirement and students will be able to
choose the time slots for all courses and also can choose the number of courses they
will be asked to do as per the credits they achieved. The maximum credits allowed for
one semester is 27,and the minimum is 16 credits with exceptions for final year
students.

◻ The academic dean explained about the assessment and weightage of each
assignment and test Mode of evaluation Weight

There is a Website for VIT it is called VTOP or else VIT on top,is a web portal for
students, faculty, parents and alumni. It’s a one stop portal for everything. It is easy to
use interactive web page. On the first day of induction, we were familiarized with the
layout and usage of VTOP by the Software Development Cell.
◻ Students can access all academic related details through VTOP, along with all
course material, curriculum marks, grades, hostel details, registration for
cocurricular activities, academic calendar and much more.
Hostel leave request can be accessed through VTOP which will
be then approved by the proctor

5. Learnings from ‘Do-it-Yourself’ Activities

We learnt about the history of VIT and Vellore in general. We were also told about
the various historical locations around VIT. After providing this information, we were
given a few topics on which we were supposed to research and write.

6. Initial Learnings and Opportunities for Self-

Development

● Hackathons- Various Hackathons are held in VIT as part of club activities.

Taking part in these hackathons helps students to develop multiple skills taught in
these hackathons.
● SAP- Semester Abroad Programme: This is a special programme by VIT that
allows students to go abroad, to any international institution with ties to VIT, for an
entire semester. In this programme, the student studies one semester, 6 full months, in
an international institute. The fundings for this are also provided by VIT itself.

● Online Courses- Students are free to study from online websites, and can obtain
certificates after completing a course. These certificates become useful when
making their resume.

● Summer Internships: Students have to go for internships in the middle of their

summer breaks in subsequent years, in order to develop their work ethics, help them
get used to the company environment, learn how a company functions, and what
skills are required to become a good employee.

7. Learnings from MATLAB – Simulink /

Programming MATLAB

Programming is a lab course that we have during our first semester. I was taught
MATLAB by Prof.Bala Anki Reddy Pol.This software allows us to solve complex
mathematical problems through programming. Knowing how to operate a software to
make it easier for us to solve problems, by using the computer to solve them, is an
extremely beneficial skill. MATLAB software can be used to solve practically any
sort of mathematical problem, no matter how complex they are:

● Plotting 2D Graphs.
● Solving Equations in 2 and 3 variables.
● Differentiating 1 variable, 2 variable and 3 variable functions.
● Integrating functions containing 1,2 and 3 variables.
● Plotting 3D curves and surfaces.
● Finding maximum and minimum values of functions in 1 and 2 variables.

As can be seen above, any sort of problem is solvable on MATLAB, however it is

only useful if the person using it knows how to use it. So, it is important to know how
to operate this software. Once we know how to operate it, how to write a proper
program that will aid us in solving the problem, it becomes fairly easy for us to solve
them

9. Any other General Observations

 Apart from the above-mentioned things, there are also other things that I have
observed at VIT. One such thing is the hostels. The hostel rooms are of two
types: AC and Non-AC, and can provide accommodations ranging from 1
bed, 2 bed, 3 bed ,4 bed and 6 bed.
 The hostels and gates of VIT each have a biometric system which records
when we are going out of VIT and when we are returning. Biometrics
also take note of whether we are present within the hostels at night or not.
 VIT puts emphasis not only on academic performance, but also on physical
development, as well as mental and emotional wellness. It makes sure that
students have an overall development, be it in academics, sports, health,
social interactions, anything.
 There are a wide variety of different e-books available in the institutional
website egateway.
 Medical assistance is available inside the campus which is operational
24×7. It has all the latest equipment in its lab facility.
 All kinds of commodities are available inside campus.

Festive life in vit vellore

This was followed by a detailed speech by the pro-vice chancellor, Dr. S. Narayanan.
He explained about the various features of VIT, starting with the unique proctoring
scheme where every student is assigned to a faculty member (a proctor) who is
available to address the student’s issues.

He informed us about the two massive fests in VIT:

A. Riviera (Cultural and Sports fest)

B. Gravitas (Technological fest)
