[19~20] Read the following passage and answer the questions.

[A] Between 69,000 and 77,000 years ago, there was a great explosion at what is now
Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia. It was one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the
history of the world. Geologists know this from looking at ancient layers of earth. They
found a 15 centimeter thick layer of ash that once covered the whole of South Asia. It
could only be from a massive eruption.

[B] Many species of animals are endangered. Their habitats have been destroyed and
they are slowly disappearing. Mankind is to blame for much of this. But did you know
that humanity was once endangered as well? We didn’t do it to ourselves. It was
because of a volcano.

[C] 15 centimeters might not seem like much, but it was enough to kill almost every
living thing in South Asia. The ash blocked sunlight from reaching plants, and those
plants died. With their food source gone, many animals started dying as well, including
humans. At that point in time, most ancient humans lived in South Asia. Thus, the effect
on the human population was dramatic.
