WHY ™ PIPE AND FITTINGS ARE THE BEST CHOICE
FOR HOT AND COLD POTABLE WATER DISTRIBUTION ?
THE RAW MATERIAL
FlowGuard™ PLUS is a Hot and Cold Potable Water
Distribution System made of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride
(CPVC) for use in single and multi‐family homes,
apartments, high‐rises, hotel/motels and commercial
installations. FlowGuard™ PLUS CPVC has been used for
hot and cold water distribution in the United States since
1960. It has a history of superior performance and
competitive prices compared to metal and other alternative
piping systems. CPVC pipe and fittings are jointed by
solvent cementing which, through chemical bonding,
essentially makes the pipe and fitting become one
continuous piece. FlowGuard™ PLUS CPVC meets
requirements of both ANSI/NSF standard 14‐plastic piping
system components and related materials‐and standard

FRICTION LOSS IN PIPES WATER HAMMER SURGE PRESSURE

A great advantage that Flowguard Plus Pipe enjoys Whenever the flow rate of fluid in a pipe is change,
there is a surge in pressure known as water hammer, The
over its metallic competitors is a smooth inner surface which longer the line and the faster the fluid is moving, the greater
is resistant to scaling and fouling. This means that friction the hydraulic shock will be. Water hammer may be caused by
pressure losses in the fluid flow are minimized from the opening or closing a valve, starting or stopping a pump, or
the movement of entrapped air through the pipe. The

method of calculating friction head losses in piping systems.

failure may result. When making a joint, apply
a heavy, even coat of cement to the pipe end.
Use the same applicator without additional
cement to apply a thin coat inside the fitting
socket. Too much cement can cause clogged
water ways.
DEBURRING/BEVELING
2 Burrs and filings can prevent proper
contact between tube and fitting during
assembly and should be removed from
the outside and inside of the pipe.
Debarking tool, pocket knife or file are
suitable for this. A slight bevel on the end
of the tubing will ease entry of the tubing
into the fitting socket. ASSEMBLY
5 Immediately insert the tubing into the fitting
socket, rotate the tube ¼ to ½ turn while

Properly align the fittings. Hold the assembly

joint to set‐up.

tubing should make contact with the socket wall
1/3 to 2/3 of the way into the fitting socket.

SET AND CURE

Solvent cement set and cure times are a
function of pipe size, temperature and relative
6
humidity. Curing time is shorter for drier
environments, smaller sizes and higher
temperatures. It requires 10 to 20 minutes for
perfect joint.

Note : For sizes above 65 mm (2½") use IPS 70 primer before applying solvent cement. The purpose of a primer is to penetrate and soften the surfaces so
they can stick together. The proper use of a primer ensures that the surfaces are prepared for fusion in a wide variety of weather conditions.
