Evaluating a Website

Anyone can create a website and put anything on


it. It is up to the viewer to determine whether the
information is reliable, accurate, truthful, well-
researched, and meaningful. You will need to be
able to evaluate websites where you gather
information for various inquiries in this course. You
may also find these criteria helpful when accessing
information in your day-to-day life.

The following are some criteria that can be used to evaluate a website:
The Source of the Information

o What is the domain of the website?


o What does the domain tell you about who produced the website
e.g., government, educational institution, organizational or
commercial?
o Who is the author of the information?

The Credentials of the Source

o Investigate the background information of the author or


organization that created the website.
o Check the "about us" page - does it exist?
o Is there contact information? Does it “make sense?

Objectivity and Bias

o Is the purpose of the website to promote a belief or agenda?


o Is there advertising that influences the content?
o Is the point of view or position taken clearly stated and why?
o Is the bias appropriate?
Currency of the Information

o Check when the website was created and when it was last
updated.
o Are the links current and working? e.g., The Toronto Star - notice
that the date and time when the website was last updated are
indicated

Coverage

o Is the topic covered in depth?


o Are there links to other similar websites or further details?
e.g., The Lung Association - notice that there are links to other
professional societies

Verifiable

o Is there a bibliography or works cited on the website?


o Can you find two or more reliable sources that provide the same
information? e.g., Doctors Without Borders - provides an
extensive resources section in the News and Resources section.

Design and Ease of Use

o Are the grammar and spelling correct?


o Is there a site map?
o Is there a search function available?
o Is the site easy to navigate and logically arranged? e.g., David
Suzuki Foundation – this website is easy to navigate
