Understanding the Purpose Prerequisites

To provide clear instructions on usingthe new Tools Needed:

Scope: This procedure applies to all users who create or manage documents in GoogleDocs.

2. Procedure: -

Below is the Step-by-Step Guide for Using

1. Create a tab:
By default, a new document has a tab called “Tab 1.” You can’t delete “Tab 1” unless another
the tab is present.

2. To open the left panel, at the topleft,
click Show tabs & outlines

3. Next, Click the Add tab '+' icon.

4. Optional: To add a subtab, click

Tab options >


Add subtab '+' .

5. You can also change a tab into a


subtab by dragging it and dropping it
onto another tab. Up tothree tabs can
be nested in this manner.

Tips:-
➢ You can turn a tab into a subtab when you drag and drop one tab onto another. You cannest up
to 3-tab levels.
➢ In suggestion mode, you can view tabs but can’t add, move, or remove them.

2. Find document tabs & outlines: -
When you open a document, the left panel automatically shows the document tabs. If the
document contains only one tab with content, the left panel won't open automatically.

1. On a document, at the top left,


click Show tabs & outlines

Then click on the tab you wishto
navigate to.

To find the outline of each tab:

1. Click Tab options

>Show outline .

2. To hide the outline, click Tab

options >

Tip:
➢ You can click on a tab to show and hide the outline.

➢ To close the left panel, click Hide tabs & outlines .

3. Deleting tabs: -
You can only delete a tab in a document if you have edit access and there is more than one tab
present.

1. On a document, at the top


left, click Show tabs &

outlines .
2. Click the tab you want to
delete.

3. Click Tab options >


Delete .

4. Duplicating tabs: -
Only document editors with editing access can edit tabs and can do so while the document is in
editing mode.

Tip: When you duplicate a tab, it retains the style applied within that tab.

5. Renaming tabs: -
Before you can rename a tab, check that you are an editor with edit access and the document is
in editing mode.

rename.

Rename .
➢ Enter the tab name.
➢ Press Enter.

Tip: You can add an emoji to a tabname.
On the tab, click Tab options

> Choose emoji

6. Linking to tabs: -
You can easily share links to specific tabs from the Tabs Options menu.

click Show tabs & outlines

Copy link .
4. Share the link.

Tip: You can copy the URL in your browser to get the link to your active tab.

7. Moving tabs: -
You can only move a tab if the document has more than one tab and you’re in editor mode.

click Show tabs & outlines

3. Drag the tab you want to move
to the new position and release the
mousebutton.

3. Troubleshooting with tabs: -

1. Find tabs: -
➢ If you can’t find tabs, make sure that the left panel isn’t hidden.

➢ To open the left panel, click Show tabs & outlines .

2. Can’t add more tabs: -


➢ If you can’t add more tabs, you might have reached the 100 tabs maximum.

3. Download or print docs with tabs: -


If you download or print from Google Docs, you'll only download or print the active tab. If
you want to download or print all tabs at once, you can do it from Google Drive:
➢ On your computer, go to Google Drive.
➢ Right-click the document you want.

➢ Select Download .
➢ Optional: Print from your computer downloaded files.

4. Conclusion: -

By using document tabs in Google Docs, you can effectively organize large documents into
