GRADUATESHIP EXAMINATION
Section-A August 2016
Time: 3 hrs. Max. Marks: 100
IEA 01 – PROBABILITY AND STATISTICAL METHODS
Instructions :
• Answer Any Five questions
• Use of statistical tables permitted
• Show the working steps clearly

Q1. a) The grades of a group of 1000 students in an exam are

normally distributed with a mean of 70 and a standard
deviation of 10. A student from this group is selected
randomly.

i) Find the probability that his/her grade is greater

than 80.
ii) Find the probability that his/her grade is less than
50.
iii) Find the probability that his/her grade is between
50 and 80.
iv) Approximately, how many students have grades
greater than 80? (4×2.5=10)

b) Car color preferences change over the years and

according to the particular model that the customer
selects. In a recent year, 15% of all luxury cars sold were
red. If 50 cars of that year and type are randomly
selected, find the following probabilities:
i) At least five cars are red
ii) At most six cars are red
iii) More than four cars are red
iv) Exactly four cars are red
v) Between three and five cars (inclusive) are red
(5×2=10)

1 Set-1 (18)
Q2. a) A publisher has discovered that the numbers of words
contained in a new manuscript are normally distributed
with a mean equal to 20,000 words in excess of that
specified in the author's contract and a standard deviation
of 10,000 words. If the publisher wants to be almost
certain (say, with a probabilrty of 0.95) that the
manuscript will have less than 100,000 words, what
number of words should the publisher specify in the
contract? (15)

b) Explain the general procedure of testing the

appropriateness of a distribution. (5)

Q3. a) A large candy manufacturer produces packs of candy

targeted to weigh 52 grams. A quality control manager
was concerned that the variation in the actual weights
was larger than acceptable. That is, he was concerned
that some packs weighed significantly less than 52-
grams and some weighed significantly more than 52
grams. In order to estimate σ the standard deviation of
the weights of the nominal 52-gram packs, he took a
random sample of n = 10 packs off of the factory line.
The random sample yielded a sample variance of 4.2
grams.

i) Use the random sample to derive a 95% confidence

interval for σ . (note: the interval is for σ not σ 2).

ii) What assumptions did you make about the

sample in order to make your estimate. (2×5=10)

b) Describe the procedure of hypothesis testing of means

when the population standard deviation is known and
not known (2×5=10).

Q4. a) While several operating systems and web browsers are

in use, here we will restrict attention to two operating
systems (Windows and Mac) and two browsers (Firefox
and Chrome); so we will assume that everybody is using
either Windows or Mac, and either Firefox or Chrome.
The number of visits to the web site math.hawaii.edu
using one of these operating systems and one of these
browsers in May 2011 was as follows.

2 Set-1 (19)
Number of visits Mac Windows
Firefox 538 1,788
Chrome 290 1,126
Conduct a chi-square test of the hypothesis that the choice
of browser is independent of the choice of operating
system. (15)

b) Explain about the short cut method to calculate standard

errors estimate. (5)

Q5. a) Write in detail about 5 important time series methods

of forecasting with their merits and demerits. (5×2=10)

b) For a sample of 10 individuals let us consider the

following set of data,

x 27 22 15 35 30 52 35 55 40 40

y 30 26 25 42 38 40 32 54 50 43

Determine the line of best fit for the above data.

What may be the value of y for x=18? (10)

Q6. a) Explain the situations or conditions for which the

following probability distributions are appropriate: (5×2=10)

a) Poisson b) Normal c) Binomial d) Exponential and

e) Geometric

b) Suppose that a random sample of n = 5 was selected

from the vineyard properties for sale in Sonoma County,
California, in each of three years. The following data are
consistent with summary information on price per acre
for disease-resistant grape vineyards in Sonoma County.
Carry out an ANOVA to determine whether there is
evidence to support the claim that the mean price per
acre for vineyard land in Sonoma County was not the
same for each of the three years considered. Test at the
0.05 level and at the 0.01 level. (10)
1996: 30000 34000 36000 38000 40000
