REASON/DESCRIPTION/OPERATIONAL CONSEQUENCES
Airbus received some reports of defective cadmium plated MS21042 Self-locking Nuts installed on Fan
Cowl Door Hinge Fittings, fitted on A320 Family Aircraft powered by CFM56-5A/-5B Engines.
The failed Nuts presented a throughout longitudinal crack and normally occurs shortly after installation.
Once the nut has failed the affected bolt is no longer able to transmit loads.
Investigations of the failed Nuts conducted by UTAS have established that the Nuts failed due to
hydrogen embrittlement, likely introduced during the manufacturing process. The defective Nuts
originated only from particular identified manufacturing lots.
The MS21042 Self-locking Nuts are approved alternatives instead of Hi-Lok Collars HL97DU-8 on
production and in-service as per CMM repair, thus these nuts may have been used to install the Fan
Cowl Door Hinges.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued the Safety Information Bulletin No.
2012-06R2 to advise the aviation community of a potential hazard resulting from the possible failure of
MS21042 series Nuts belonging to the identified lots.
This Service Bulletin is published to advise all operators of A320 aircraft powered by CFM56-5A/5B
Engines of the issue of UTAS Service Bulletin No. RA32071-151.
This Inspection Service Bulletin provides instructions for a onetime detailed visual inspection of the Fan
Cowl Hinge Fittings to check condition of the Self-Locking Nuts and to remove and replace any
defective MS21042 Nuts with Hi-Lok Collars HL97DU-8 only.
Accomplishment of this Inspection Service Bulletin will allow the detection of any failed Nut and thus
restoring the structural design.
In addition it is expected that an Airworthiness Directive (AD) will be published by the EASA to mandate
this Inspection Service Bulletin.

Config. 001 is valid for all the aircraft given in the effectivity of this Service Bulletin as a
standard configuration.

B. CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS

C. REASON
(1) History
Airbus received some reports of defective cadmium plated MS21042 Self-locking Nuts
installed on Fan Cowl Door Hinge Fittings, fitted on A320 Family Aircraft powered by
CFM56-5A/-5B Engines.
The failed Nuts presented a throughout longitudinal crack and normally occurs shortly
after installation. Once the nut has failed the affected bolt is no longer able to transmit
loads.
Investigations of the failed Nuts conducted by UTAS have established that the Nuts
failed due to hydrogen embrittlement, likely introduced during the manufacturing process.
The defective Nuts originated only from particular identified manufacturing lots.
The MS21042 Self-locking Nuts are approved alternatives instead of Hi-Lok Collars
HL97DU-8 on production and in-service as per CMM repair, thus these nuts may have
been used to install the Fan Cowl Door Hinges.

SERVICE BULLETIN
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued the Safety Information Bulletin
No. 2012-06R2 to advise the aviation community of a potential hazard resulting from the
possible failure of MS21042 series Nuts belonging to the identified lots.
(2) Objective/Action
This Service Bulletin is published to advise all operators of A320 aircraft powered by
CFM56-5A/5B Engines of the issue of UTAS Service Bulletin No. RA32071-151.
This Inspection Service Bulletin provides instructions for a onetime detailed visual
inspection of the Fan Cowl Hinge Fittings to check condition of the Self-Locking Nuts
and to remove and replace any defective MS21042 Nuts with Hi-Lok Collars HL97DU-8
only.
(3) Advantages
Accomplishment of this Inspection Service Bulletin will allow the detection of any failed
Nut and thus restoring the structural design.
In addition it is expected that an Airworthiness Directive (AD) will be published by the

EASA to mandate this Inspection Service Bulletin.
(4) Operational/Maintenance Consequences
None
D. DESCRIPTION
To accomplish this Service Bulletin it is necessary to :
(1) Do a Special Detailed Inspection of the Fan Cowl Door Hinge Nuts in accordance
with VSB on Engine 1
(2) Do a Special Detailed Inspection of the Fan Cowl Door Hinge Nuts in accordance
with VSB on Engine 2

(1) Classification
RECOMMENDED: Service Bulletin recommended to be accomplished to prevent

significant operational disruptions.
(2) Accomplishment Timescale
Accomplishment of this Service Bulletin is recommended within 24 months from Service

Bulletin original issue date.

This Service Bulletin has been classified Recommended. It is expected that an

Airworthiness Directive (AD) published by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
will be issued to change this classification to Mandatory. It is anticipated that the AD will
confirm the threshold given but reference should be made to the AD for confirmation of
the mandated accomplishment timescale.

The technical content of this document is approved under the authority of Design
Organisation Approval No. EASA.21J.031.
If an aircraft listed in the effectivity has a modification or repair embodied that is not of
AIRBUS origin, and which affects the content of this Service Bulletin, the operator is
responsible for obtaining approval by its airworthiness authority for any adaptation necessary
before incorporation of the Service Bulletin.
G. MANPOWER
The manpower estimates given in this Service Bulletin are based on the direct labor cost to
do the work. These estimates assume that the work will be done by experienced personnel,
and may need to be revised upwards to suit operator’s circumstances. The estimates do not
include the time to prepare, plan or inspect the work. Manufacture and procurement of parts
and tools, drying times for paints, sealants, etc., and general administration work are also not
included.

AND MECHANICALLY SERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO MAINTENANCE
