INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Pune is the eighth largest city in India and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra,
after Mumbai. The automotive sector is particularly prominent. All sectors of the
automotive industry are represented, leading the Independent to cite Pune as India's
"Motor City". Pune has a rapidly growing software industry as well, with multinational
companies having large development centers. Pune has more than a hundred educational
institutes and nine universities, and has acquired a reputation as 'The Oxford of the East',
with students from all over the world studying at the colleges of the University of Pune.
The vibrant city of Pune is one of the fastest growing industrial hubs in
Maharashtra. Pune attracts students and professionals from all over India and abroad as it
is one of India's leading industrial cities. Pune has witnessed a tremendous growth in
population in the last 15 years due to overall development of various industrial sectors
and information technology. With a total population of 5.9 million, Pune urban
agglomeration is one of the fastest growing areas in Maharashtra.
The urban agglomeration of Pune including Khadki, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Dehu
has made a huge growth in its population in the last 15 years. Among the million plus
cities in Maharashtra, Pune has the maximum ratio of vehicles per 1,000 persons - 753
vehicles per 1,000 people. Pune contributes 20.66 per cent of the vehicle population of
the state. The number of vehicles on road are 34,90,569 as on Feb 2016 and a two
wheelers count of 26,13,489. This number is increasing at a rate of about 60,000 units
every year. On certain parts of the day it might take as much as 3 hours to travel a
distance of 5 Kms within Metropolitan Pune.
The private vehicles have seen growth in geometric proportion, the fleet strength
of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) — Pune public transport
body has failed to grow even in arithmetic proportion. While the fleet strength of
PMPML in 2005 was roughly around 1,044 buses, the present strength is just about 1,600
buses, a 53 per cent growth. The transport body has taken on lease around 500 buses,
taking the total fleet strength to around 2,000.

At the current rate of the growth of the city, we won’t be surprised if Pune starts
adding 1,500 or 2,000 vehicles per day, before 2018. These are scary numbers, from the
point of view of the city traffic. The only way for the city traffic to sustain itself in the
medium term, is by encouraging more commuters to use public transit and reduce the
reliance on private vehicles. Today, only 10-20% of Pune population relies on public
transport. This needs to change. But in order to facilitate this change, the public transit
system needs to improve as soon as possible.
Traffic jams is a major transport problem in Pune. Due to traffic jams, there is
possibility of accidents because of poor traffic management. We all know that Pune is a
developed city and densely populated. But there are some basic traffic problems of Pune
which needs attention and solution as soon as possible so as to maintain the actual growth
in terms of basic development. Whenever we talk about Pune’s traffic we hear words like
disgusting, chaotic, unsafe, infamous, etc. The fatality rate is one person a day or 10 to 15
a week which is very high.
A sustainable transport system must provide mobility and accessibility to all
urban residents in a safe and environment friendly mode of transport. People tend to opt
for personal modes of transport for mobility, unless there is a strong network of public
transport system. The system needs to fast, reliable and cheap. Here arises the need of a
mass transit system which is being implemented at a slower pace in pune.
BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) is fast, reliable and cheap. Bus rapid transit (BRT) is a
term applied to a variety of public transportation systems using buses to provide faster,
more efficient service than an ordinary bus line. The goal of these systems is to approach
the service quality of rail transit while still enjoying the cost savings and flexibility of bus
transit so the city can be self sustainable. Moving people quickly, at a low cost, with
reduced greenhouse gases and air pollutants helps cities grappling with rapid growth,
congestion and environmental concerns. Most of the million plus cities are faced with
serious problem of congestion and pollution; they are looking for cost effective, efficient
and sustainable means of public transport solutions. BRTS are increasingly being
recognized as amongst most effective solution for providing a cost effective and high
quality public transport service in urban areas for both the developed and the developing
world.

BRT involves coordinated improvements in a transit system’s infrastructure,
equipment, operations, and technology that give preferential treatment to buses on urban
roadways. BRT encompasses a variety of approaches, including high capacity buses
using exclusive bus ways with other vehicles, and improving bus service on city arterial
streets. When public transit service is frequent and reliable, more people use it in place of
their cars.

Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and Pune Mahanagar
Parivahan Mahamandal Limited have spent 1,816 crores on constructing dedicated
corridors and flyovers along major routes, erecting bus shelters, and buying buses.
Despite this not a single route is operational or has succeeded in years. Citizens residing
in twin cities continue to cry foul over pathetic public transport system and from the
looks of it nothing is going to change in near future.
The scope of the thesis is limited to evaluating the potential features and public opinion
of BRTS so that it can provide as useful inputs to the detailed feasibility study for the
implementation or construction of BRTS in the selected corridor. The scope of the study
is limited to the Pune city. Further, the same approach can be used for other corridors in
the cities having similar issues.
In order to achieve the objective set out, the methodology which is carried out is as
follows
The basic step is to analyze the various Mass Rapid Transit options available for
the Pune city.
An extensive literature survey is carried out as topics relevant subjects including
reports, papers, articles, internet resources etc. By studying those examples, the
different features of BRTS system have been understood.

The various factors influencing the implementation of these systems in the pune
city are worked out and the study of these factors is done in a particular research
methodology.
A questionnaire will be prepared by including the various operational features of
BRTS and
The results from the research are analyzed and final conclusions are made on the
BRTS system implemented in pune.
