G9 LP MODULE 7 LESSON 10 Clinometer
At the end of the session learners must be able to make a clinometer and
D. Learning Objectives:
use it to measure the height of an object.
IV. PROCEDURE
A. REVIEW
-“Before we proceed to our next topic let us first have a quick review of our previous lesson. So, what was
our previous lesson all about?”
B. PRIMING
Prepare the following materials:
-1 Protractor
- 1 Piece of thin string, fishing wire, or strong thread, approximately 10" long
- 1 Drinking straw
- Weight that can be tied to the string (used a large binder clip)
- Transparent tape
C. ACTIVITY
Procedure:
To make this clinometer, start by gathering the following materials:
- 1 Protractor
- 1 Piece of thin string, fishing wire, or strong thread, approximately 10" long
- 1 Drinking straw
- Weight that can be tied to the string (I used a large binder clip)
- Transparent tape
1. Attach String to Protractor. Slide approximately one inch of the string through the hole at the
center of the protractor, and use tape to secure it.
2. Attach your weight to the other end of the string. This weight will keep the string taught and enable
you to read the angle while you are using the clinometer.
3. Attach the straw along the straight edge of the protractor using tape. You will look down through
this straw to aim your clinometer at what you are measuring.
D. ANALYSIS
What did you realize in the activity?
What is a clinometer?
What is a clinometer used for?
E. ABSTRACTION
A clinometer is a tool that is used to measure the angle of elevation, or angle from the ground, in a right -
angled triangle. You can use a clinometer to measure the height of tall things that you can't possibly reach
to the top of, flag poles, buildings, trees.
A Clinometer is a useful piece of equipment for measuring angles and calculating approximate heights. It
is used frequently in forestry, engineering and astronomy. It is also called an Astrolabe on account of
being used in astronomy. It was invented over 1,000 years ago and was an important piece of equipment
for early navigators
F. APPLICATION
Using a clinometer to measure height
What you will need;
Clinometer
Tape measure
Paper
Pen or pencil
Assistant
1. Measure the distance of the object from you. Let the distance be d.
2. Look through the straw of your clinometer at the top of the object (or whatever object you're
measuring). The weighted string should hang down freely, crossing the protractor portion of the
clinometer. Read the angle shown, and subtract from 90° to find your angle of vision from your
eye to the top of the pole (it can be helpful here to have an assistant to read the measurement
while you look through the straw). Record your results on your paper.
3. The last piece of data you need to calculate the height of your object is the height from the ground
to your eye (your eye-height). Have your assistant help you measure this using your tape
measure.
4. Draw a Picture
5. Model As a Triangle
6. Solve for X
G. EVALUATION
Page 446
1. Look for a tree in your community then find its height using a trigonometric ratio.
2. Draw an illustration.
3. Write a paragraph explaining how the height of the tree was computed.
