Should the Olympics have a permanent home?

What would happen if the Olympics had a single, permanent home? The Olympic Games have
long symbolized unity and friendly competition among nations, bringing the world together every
four years. However, as hosting costs and impacts on cities grow, some question whether it’s
time to establish a permanent home for the Games. Deciding on a permanent Olympic site
could avoid the disagreements between countries and end the expensive process of selecting a
host city every four years, though many people still prefer the tradition of rotating cities to
maintain the global appeal of the event. This essay explores both perspectives to assess if a
permanent location could offer a sustainable solution without sacrificing the Olympics' inclusivity
and excitement.

A permanent Olympic site could avoid the disagreements between countries. Whenever a new
city is selected to host the Olympics, there is the potential for disputes among countries,
especially if some countries feel that they are being unfairly overlooked. The selection of Beijing
to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, for example, sparked discussions related to political issues
such as human rights.Human Rights Watch highlighted that the Games began amid ongoing
atrocities and called for a diplomatic boycott, citing serious violations by the Chinese
government, particularly against Uighurs in Xinjiang 1. Additionally, Amnesty International
emphasized that the Olympics should not distract from China's human rights abuses and urged
the international community to press for improvements during the event (Amnesty, January 14,
2022).Therefore, establishing a fixed location for the Games could minimize these disputes and
allow countries to focus on collaboration and participation, rather than competition for hosting
rights.

Moreover, permanent Olympic location would end the expensive process of selecting a host city
every four years. Currently, cities invest large amounts of money in the bidding process, which
includes costs for marketing and infrastructure improvements. These financial investments can
incur long-term debt, as seen in the case of the 2012 London Olympics, which faced scrutiny for
its high costs. The total cost of the Games was approximately £9.3 billion, which raised
concerns about financial burdens on taxpayers and long-term obligations for maintaining venues
and infrastructure (Matt Burdett,2018). By having a predetermined location for the Games, cities
can consistently invest in facilities and infrastructure over time, rather than incurring the costs
associated with preparing a new host city every four years.

People are questioned preferred the Olympics to be held in a different city every four years
(Jenkins, 2009). Meanwhile, on the other hand helding the Olympics in the different countries
could bring a lot of benefits for the country whose hosting it, for instance social benefits, . The
same thing is also happened to Paris and Tokyo when they’re hosting the Olympics where the
social benefits highly increased. International Olympic Committee has stated that that Paris
2024’s ‘Bouger Plus’ strategy supports public bodies and employers to encourage active
schools, active cities and active workplaces. Paris 2024 successfully advocated a daily 30-
minute physical activity period in French primary schools. Not only that the committee also
stated that Before Tokyo 2020, alternatives to stairs were installed at 97 per cent of railway
stations in Tokyo, while the number of wheelchair-accessible hotel rooms grew from 460 to
3,200. These social benefits have the possibility to make those countries citizens who are
hosting the Olympics receive several beneficial effects towards it.

Not only from the side of social benefits, countries who are hosting the Olympics also gain a lot
of benefits in terms of economy for example increased job of numbers in job creations and
business growths. Based on the data that collected by the International Olympic Committee,
London’s Olympic in 2012 has created 110K jobs in six boroughs surrounding Queen
Elizabeth’s Olympic Park in East London. And not only that Rio’s Olympic in 2016 also received
a great benefit where some 2.2K small and micro businesses were awarded 390 BNM in
contracts, even creating 18 jobs. These data and facts show that hosting the Olympics games
could bring a lot of benefits toward their country.

incorporates the three arguments smoothly)
