Problem Booklet # 8

The latent heat of fusion of water at 0°C is 335 kJ/kg. How much does the entropy of 1 kg of ice
change as it melts into water assuming reversible process.

Two kg of water at 80°C is mixed adiabatically with 3 kg of water at 30°C in a constant

pressure process. Find the increase in the entropy of the total mass of water due to the mixing
process, assuming a reversible process. Assume specific heat of water at constant pressure as
4187 J/kg.K.

1 kg of ice at -5°C is exposed to atmosphere which is at 20°C. The ice melts and comes into
thermal equilibrium with the atmosphere.
Determine the entropy increase of the universe.
What is the minimum amount of work necessary to convert water back to -5°C?
Specific heat of ice is 2.093 kJ/kg.K and specific heat of water is 4.187 kJ/kg.K. The latent heat
of fusion of ice is 333.3 kJ/kg.

A heat engine operating in a cycle receives 420 kJ/cycle of heat from a source at 327°C and
rejects heat reversibly to a sink at 27°C. What do you infer from the following? Use Clausius
inequality.
- 210 kJ/cycle rejected from the engine
- 105 kJ/cycle rejected from the engine
- 315 kJ/cycle rejected from the engine

A fluid undergoes a reversible adiabatic compression from 5 bar, 0.2 m 3 to 0.05 m3 according to
the law pν1.4 = constant. Determine change in enthalpy, internal energy, entropy, heat transfer,
and work transfer for the process.

Air enters a compressor at ambient conditions of 96 kPa and 17°C with a low velocity and exits
at 1 MPa, 327°C, and 120 m/s. The compressor is cooled by the ambient air at 17°C at the rate
of 1500 kJ/min. The power input to the compressor is 300 kW. Determine mass flow rate of air
and rate of entropy generation.

1kg of water at 273K is brought in contact with a heat reservoir at 373K. When the water has
reached 373K, find the entropy change of the universe.
If water is heated from 273K to 373K by first bringing it in contact with a reservoir at 323K and
then with a reservoir at 373K, what will be entropy change of universe? Take specific heat of
water as 4.187 kJ/kg.K.
