The IAS officer who cut covid-19 spike by 75%

The second wave of COVID-19 overwhelmed India’s healthcare infrastructure which was already
challenged.

While there were a lack of beds and shortages of oxygen cylinders in many parts of the country,
Maharashtra’s Nandurbar district had an efficient system in place. When there was a steady decline of
cases, many cities and villages began removing their temporary Covid care facilities. But IAS officer
Dr. Rajendra, instead, ramped up the infrastructure in case there was a recurrence of cases. He installed
additional oxygen plants, brought in ambulances, ventilators, beds, vaccines, medicines, staff, a website,
and control rooms in every block. He used a combination of resources to meet expenses. To avoid a
massive shortage in terms of frontline doctors, he brought in all the local doctors and trained them to
perform critical procedures such as intubation and monitoring oxygen level.

All these efforts paid off when the second wave of the pandemic came. People from even the neighboring
districts and states now visited Nandurbar district for treatment. The district also managed to reduce the
disease rate.
