ENGLISH GRAMMAR Present Continuous

USE
We use the present continuous:

To talk about things that are happening now, at the moment we speak.
A: What are you doing?
B: I´m writing an e-mail.

We´re leaving now. Goodbye.


The bus is coming.

To talk about things that are happening now, but not exactly at the moment we speak.
My brother is looking for a job at the moment.
You are spending a lot of money these days.

To talk about something we have already arranged or planned to do in the future.


We often give the future time (tomorow, in July, on Saturday, this afternoon, next week, etc…)

A: What are you doing on Saturday morning?


B: I´m meeting a friend.

We´re visiting our grandparents next weekend.


My sister is starting a new job next Monday.

IMPORTANT

Some verbs are not used in the present continuous. They are normally used in the simple forms.
Some of the most important ones are:

SPELLING RULES
With most verbs we add -ing.
go > going
play > playing
work > working

If the verb ends in consonant + -e we delete the -e and add -ing.


come > coming live > living
move > moving have > having

*Exception: be > being

If the verb ends in -ie, we change -ie to -ying.


die > dying
lie > lying

If the verb ends in one vowel + one consonant ,we double the consonant.

shop > shopping

*Exceptions:

a) When the verb ends in one vowel + -y, -w or -x ,we just add -ing.

b) When the last syllable verb is not stressed.

2. But when the verb ends in:

a) –o, -ss, -sh, -ch, we add –es




b) a consonant followed by –y, the –y changes into –ie and we


add -s

c) a vowel followed by –y we just add -s

3. To form the negative and the interrogative we need the auxiliary


verb to do in the present simple. This means we have to add –es
in the 3rd person singular (he, she, it) while the main verb will
be used in the infinitive.

Adverbs of Frequency
• Use adverbs of frequency to say how often something happens.
• Adverbs of frequency can be positive or negative.

! Do not use negative adverbs of frequency in negative statements.


We rarely eat lunch.

Placement of Adverbs of Frequency


• In affirmative statements, adverbs of frequency come after the verb be. They come
before other verbs.
• In negative statements, most adverbs of frequency come before be + not or do + not.
• However, always comes after be + not or do + not.
She isn’t always late.  She doesn’t always eat lunch.
• In Yes/No questions and short answers, adverbs of frequency come after the subject.
Other Positions of Adverbs of Frequency
• Frequently, usually, generally, sometimes, and occasionally can also come at the
beginning or end of a sentence.
Sometimes I’m late.   I don’t eat lunch usually.

It is used to talk about real or possible situations which are always
true. The result of the condition is an absolute certainty. The
important thing about the zero conditional is that the condition
always has the same result.
