Subject: Statement of purpose for Canada student visa application

Dear sir/ma’am,

Since high school I had been a person who was approached for any challenging situations that my
friends faced. Even though I might not have experienced what they were going through at the time, I
was able to provide them comfort. They used to jokingly tell me to become a therapist. Little did I know
that I might consider it as a career. I'm Smriti Negi, an Indian student who wants to advance in a global
context. Along with my family, I live in Noida. My mother Krishna Negi works as a Senior Nursing
Officer at AIIMS New Delhi, and my father Virender Singh Negi is the Vice-President of SKH Global
Travels Pvt. Ltd. My younger brother is enrolled in a private institution in Noida to earn a bachelor's
degree in event management. In addition to them, I live with my two-year-old dog Gigi, who has
become the heart of our family. During my schooling sports had been an integral part of my life. I
captained my school's football team and was a part of many sports such as long-tennis, volleyball, long-
jump, and disk throw. I think sports has allowed me to form better relationships with others as I needed
to trust my fellow players so that we can perform well. I can adjust to my environment comfortably and
work well with others. I played the bagpipe as a part of the school band. Being a class representative
and the house prefect has allowed me to make important and difficult decisions that are good for my
fellow students as well as for myself.

I passed 10th grade in 2017 with a 85.5% and took humanities. In 2019, I completed class 12th with
86.25%. After studying psychology in standard 11th and 12th, I was intrigued by the wonders of the
human brain and the complex relationships between human behavior and the world we live in.
Psychology is a subject that can be applied to any field, be it school, military, hospitals, offices, sports,
or any other everyday activity. Studying psychology has helped me understand human behavior and
allowed me to better understand how we think, act, and feel. I completed my Bachelor of Arts (honours)
in Applied Psychology from Amity University in 2022 with a 70.9%, which helped me gain knowledge
about the various fields of psychology as well as the history of psychology. I now have a better
understanding of the subject and can pursue the course without much trouble.

Wanting to explore and experience psychology beyond the pages, I did different summer internships
during my under-graduation. I interned in developmental psychology and forensic psychology. As an
intern, I was tasked with analyzing and writing reports from various real-life case studies. I was also
taught about various Psychological Developmental Disorders and got to write interventions for the
same. I not only learned about the theoretical aspects of the fields but also about how to be a professional
and follow the ethics of a psychologist. After completing my bachelor’s degree I did a two month
training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming which gave me a different perspective of dealing with our
problems. This training provided with an opportunity to interact with a client which was my first hands-
on experience. I was never a theoretical learner and it was difficult for me to learn something without
understanding it first. Interacting with a few clients and observing my trainer help them, gave me the
confidence boost that I needed to pursue my dream of becoming a mental health professional.

I researched about programs which would provide me with the kind of exposure to the real world that I
anticipated, but it could not be provided by any of the programs that I found in India. I researched
different colleges with a crystal clear sense of what I wanted to get out of them, and I was unsatisfied
with any of the potential benefits I found in India. I wanted to do a course that would suit me the best
and therefore, I decided to explore my options outside the country. I explored many countries like
United States, Australia, United Kingdom and Canada. Out of all these I found Canada to be a more
suitable match for me.

Why Autism and Behavioural Science program?

When I learned about the Autism and Behavioural Science programme being offered by St. Lawrence
College, I understood that I would be able to obtain a Canadian education at a very high level for a cost
that was much more affordable for my budget. It would give me the exposure to the real world that I
need. It is a specialised programme that teaches how to use a variety of evidence-based techniques to
help people with ASD develop their skills throughout their lives by reading pertinent literature, creating
intervention plans, putting programmes into place, and gathering data to make sure intervention
strategies effectively meet predetermined goals. It provides me with the perfect opportunity to learn
theories with active learning experiences and group works as well as provide field placements to gain
some hands-on experience. I know that after the course is over, I will not only be well-versed in ASD
and Applied Behaviour Analysis, but also have a deeper understanding of how to use it.
Why St. Lawrence college?
Along with the curriculum, St. Lawrence College's facilities, professors, and the plethora of glowing
online reviews all greatly pleased me. St. Lawrence also welcomes thousands of international students
like me and offers an opportunity to experience the Canadian education system with ease and comfort.
It provides me with knowledge and abilities that will enable me to advance without the difficulties or
high costs of a big-city lifestyle. I can take advantage of St. Lawrence College's small class sizes,
practical learning opportunities, faculty with a variety of professional backgrounds, cutting-edge
multimedia classrooms, access to additional computer labs, expanded library facilities with meeting and
study spaces, academic counselling and peer-tutoring.
Why from Canada?
Canada is the most desirable location for studying abroad because of its diversity and great reputation
for academic achievement. It is a top pick for me because of the low tuition and cutting-edge facilities.
Canada is a safe country for a single female student who has never travelled alone before. I could
choose from a variety of specialised diplomas, advanced diplomas, and post-graduate degrees at
colleges while studying in Canada, which gives me a quicker and more relevant path to developing the
skills I need to find employment. While studying in Canada, I can meet people from different ethnicities
and celebrate different cultures.
Financials
The financial expenses for my tuition, accommodation and travel will be covered by my parents. I have
already paid one year tuition fees of CAD 15,823.18 and opened a GIC account of CAD 10,000. Besides
this, if required my parents have enough savings from their salary to help me out further without any
trouble.
Future Plans
Having a degree from a prestigious college in Canada will give me an edge over the others who have
studied in India and I will have more opportunities to practice my new acquired skills and grow more
professionally. With a specialized degree, I will be able to help the specially-abled as I will have a well-
rounded opportunity to work effectively as an integral member of a services delivery team who supports
individuals with autism and autism spectrum disorders. After completing my degree, I will come back
to India as my family and friends, all live here. As there is a lot of need for professionals who can help
out the specially-abled in India, I can work a schools, colleges, hospitals or even open my own clinic to
help people with ASD using applied behavioural analysis (ABA) to treat people. Children with ASD,
need professionals to help them gain knowledge and the important skills that will help them sustain in
the world because those with autism do not experience all of the same characteristics and traits, and due
to this, it’s important to ensure you’re treating all individuals equally and fairly, but to also adopt a
support system that fits all individually. So there are a lot of great career opportunities in the field for
me to have my dream career as a therapist.

Yours sincerely
Smriti Negi
