Title: Evaluation of “Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation

and Vulnerability” by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC)
Introduction
In my research essay, I argue that global action on climate change must
prioritize climate adaptation measures in addition to mitigation strategies
because many communities are already experiencing severe impacts. One
critical source I am using to support this argument is the IPCC report titled
“Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability.” This report
was published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),
an international body under the United Nations that provides scientific
assessments on climate change. This source was released in February
2022 as part of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), making it both
recent and highly relevant. Given the IPCC's authority and the depth of
research presented, I will demonstrate that this source is both credible
and highly useful for my argument.
My evaluation of the IPCC report will show that it is a credible and
indispensable source for supporting my research on climate adaptation
strategies.

Source Evaluation
1. Credibility: The IPCC report is widely recognized as one of the most
credible sources on climate change due to the rigorous nature of its
peer-reviewed research and its backing by the United Nations. The
report was authored by hundreds of scientists from various fields,
including climatology, ecology, and economics. Each of these
experts was selected through a thorough vetting process, ensuring
the legitimacy of their contributions. Additionally, the IPCC’s work
undergoes multiple rounds of review, with feedback from
governments and other scientists worldwide, which bolsters its
credibility.
A notable aspect of the report’s credibility is the transparency in its
research methodology. For example, the report includes a comprehensive
list of its references, data sources, and the limitations of the models used
in projecting future climate impacts. As the report states, “The models
used in this assessment have undergone extensive validation against
historical data and future projections under various emission scenarios”
(IPCC, 2022, p. 115). This attention to methodological rigor and peer-
review ensures that the findings are not only accurate but also reliable.
2. Usefulness: This report is highly useful for my research because it
provides a thorough analysis of the impacts of climate change
across various regions and sectors, which is critical for
understanding why adaptation measures are necessary. One key
finding is that “climate change has already caused substantial
damages and increasingly irreversible losses in terrestrial,
freshwater and coastal and open ocean ecosystems” (IPCC, 2022, p.
7). This statement supports my argument that the effects of climate
change are no longer avoidable for many communities and
ecosystems, necessitating immediate adaptation.
Moreover, the report’s detailed case studies on adaptation provide
practical examples of how countries and communities are responding to
climate impacts. For instance, it highlights the adaptive measures taken in
cities to combat extreme heat, such as “urban green spaces, cooling
centers, and enhanced infrastructure planning” (IPCC, 2022, p. 48). This
section will be particularly useful in my research to illustrate successful
adaptation strategies and emphasize the importance of proactive
planning. The depth of the data and the geographic breadth of the report
make it indispensable for my research, allowing me to present a well-
rounded and thoroughly supported argument.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the IPCC’s “Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and
Vulnerability” report is both a credible and highly useful source for my
research. The report’s authors are respected experts in their fields, and its
publication by the IPCC, a trusted international body, adds to its reliability.
Additionally, the report’s comprehensive coverage of climate impacts and
adaptation strategies makes it an invaluable resource for supporting my
argument that global climate policy must prioritize adaptation measures.

Reflection Questions:
1. What types of questions did you ask yourself when
evaluating the credibility and usefulness of your source? I
asked myself whether the IPCC as an organization was reputable
and whether the report was peer-reviewed by other scientists. I also
considered the qualifications of the authors and how transparent the
report was about its methodology. In terms of usefulness, I asked
whether the report provided relevant data and case studies that
could support my argument on climate adaptation.
2. How do you feel this evaluation practice will help you as you
continue to move through the research process? This
evaluation practice will help me carefully assess the quality of future
sources. By systematically evaluating a source’s credibility and
usefulness, I can ensure that my research is built on reliable data,
making my argument more robust. This process will also help me
avoid biased or unreliable sources, which could weaken my
research.
