CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Family support and well-being is when all family members are safe,

healthy, and have chances for educational advancement and economic

mobility. Support services such as early care and education, housing and

food assistance, and physical and mental health care positively contribute to

the well-being of families and their children. When families face challenges

that cause stress, including poverty and homelessness, their health and

wellness can be negatively impacted. Engaging families as active

participants in problem-solving and goal-setting can help them identify and

use their own strengths to address the challenges they face. When families

are healthy, safe, and economically stable, their children’s health and well-

being can thrive.

This study is important because it have shown that family support,

including emotional and financial support, plays an important role in

fostering positive academic outcomes for students. Additionally, family

support has been linked to increased academic motivation and achievement,

as well as higher grades and credit accumulation.

The main purpose of this study is to shed light on the importance of

family support as a protective factor against various challenges and stressors

that the students may face. By examining the impact of family support on

students' well-being, the literature aims to provide insights into effective


strategies and interventions that can be implemented to enhance family

support systems and ultimately improve the overall well-being and success

of the students.

According to Nyarko (2011), family support and well-being refers to the

engagement of the parents in the school activities of the students with the

aim of fostering their students academic success. These factors include

motivation (Alfaro et al. 2006), goal orientation (Dupeyrat and Marine 2005)

and self-efficacy (Bandura 1997).

Family support in relation to well-being is to create a supportive and

nurturing environment that enhances a students ability to succeed

academically.

Dropping out of school is a significant issue that can have long-term

consequences for individuals and society as a whole. When students choose

to leave school before completing their education, they miss out on valuable

learning opportunities and face numerous challenges in their future

endeavor (Meriam Webster,1831). There are several reasons why students

may choose to drop out of school. One common factor is the lack of

academic engagement or disinterest in the curriculum. When students feel

disconnected from their studies or find the material irrelevant to their lives,

they may lose motivation and ultimately decide to leave school. Additionally,
personal or family circumstances, such as financial difficulties, health issues,

or family responsibilities, can also contribute to a student's decision to drop

out.

The consequences of dropping out of school can be far-reaching. Without a

high school diploma or equivalent qualification, individuals often face limited

job prospects and lower earning potential. The lack of education can create

barriers to employment opportunities and hinder their ability to secure stable

and well-paying jobs. This can perpetuate the cycle of poverty and social

inequality. Furthermore, dropping out of school can have negative effects on

individuals' overall well-being and quality of life. Studies have shown that

individuals who do not complete their education are more likely to

experience higher rates of unemployment, poverty, and involvement in

criminal activities. They may also have limited access to healthcare and face

challenges in accessing social services.


To address the issue of student dropout, it is crucial to implement strategies

that promote student engagement, support at-risk students, and provide

alternative pathways to education. This includes creating a supportive and

inclusive learning environment, offering vocational training programs, and

providing counseling and mentorship opportunities for students facing

personal or academic challenges dropping out of school is a significant issue

with long-term consequences for individuals and society. It is essential to

address the underlying factors that contribute to student dropout and

implement strategies that promote educational engagement, support, and

alternative pathways to ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to

complete their education and achieve their full potential.

The family support in academic performance cannot be overstated. Family

support plays a vital role in shaping a student's educational journey and has

a profound impact on their academic success. Emotional well-being,

motivation, access to resources, academic guidance, and positive role

modeling are all key factors that contribute to a student's success in

education. By fostering a supportive and nurturing family environment, we

can empower students to reach their full potential academically and achieve

long-term success in their educational journey.

According to Nyarko (2011), Academic Performance refers to the

The goal in conducting this study is to create an environment that fosters

and enhances a students educational journey this study is to support the

students in achieving their academic goals.

The conduct of the study begins on March 2024and will end in May

20245. During the second semester of School Year 2024-2025. This

investigation seeks to: Identify the key factors of Family support and

academic performance among 1st year Social Work students at YBVC.

Statement of the Problem


This study will be conducted to gather necessary information that will

lead to the determination of the fFamily sSupport and well-being.Academic

Performance.

Specifically, this study seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the socio demographic profile of the respondents in terms of.

1.2 Sex

1.3 Civil Status

[2.] What is the level of family supports provided by the parents to the

respondents? are the effects of family support and academic

performance?

[3.] What is the level of well-beingacademic performance of the

respondents? types of family support have been found to enhance

academic performance?

[4.] Is there any significant relation between to the family support and

well-beingacademic performance?

Hypothesis of the Study

Ho1: There is no significant relationship between evidence to suggest that

family support and plays a crucial role in well-being academic performance

of the respondents. college students in YBVC.


H1: There is significant relationship between family support and well-being

academic performance of the respondents.

Significance of the Study

The significance of a study on family support and well-being academic

performance is multifaceted and holds several implications:

Academic Success. Family support on the well-being of college

students can provide insights into how to enhance their academic success.

Family support, such as emotional encouragement, guidance, and financial

assistance, can positively influence students' motivation, engagement, and

persistence in their studies, leading to improved academic performance and

graduation rates.

Informing educational policies and interventions. The findings of

the study can inform the development of educational policies and

interventions that promote and enhance family support. It can guide

policymakers and educators in designing programs and initiatives that foster

strong family-school partnerships, encourage parental involvement, and

provide resources to support families in their role as educational advocates.


Tailoring support services. The study can contribute to the

development of targeted support services for students and families.

Strengthening family-school partnerships. The study can

emphasize the importance of collaboration and communication between

families and educational institutions.

Enhancing student well-being. This study has a direct impact on

students’ overall well-being, including their mental health, self-esteem, and

sense of belonging.

Contributing to the body of knowledge. The study adds to the

existing body of research on family support and well-being. It contributes to

the collective understanding of the factors that influence students’

educational outcomes and provides evidence-based insights that can be

used by researchers, educators, and policymakers to further advance the

field of education.

Understanding the impact of family support. The study can

provide valuable insights into the role and impact of family support on

academic performance. It helps to identify the specific ways in which family

support influences students' educational outcomes, such as their grades, test

scores, and overall academic achievement.


Informing educational policies and interventions. The findings of

the study can inform the development of educational policies and

interventions that promote and enhance family support. It can guide

policymakers and educators in designing programs and initiatives that foster

strong family-school partnerships, encourage parental involvement, and

provide resources to support families in their role as educational advocates.

and sense of belonging. The study can shed light on the positive influence of

family support on student well-being, emphasizing the need to prioritize

holistic development alongside academic performance.


Contributing to the body of knowledge. The study adds to the

existing body of research on family support and academic performance. It

contributes to the collective understanding of the factors that influence

students' educational outcomes and provides evidence-based insights that

can be used by researchers, educators, and policymakers to further advance

the field of education.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research focused on understanding the family support and well-

being academic performance among college students in Yllana Bay View

College. (YBVC) . It will explore aspect participants and family support.

Additionally, the purpose of the study is to examine its significant

relationship through identifying the socio demographic profile in terms of

age, sex, and civil status. The component of the emotional support, financial

support and moral. The components of grades, attendance, class

participation, and oral recitation.

The respondents of the study will be the first year social work A1. A

total of 60 respondents are targeted. Descriptive questionnaire will be used

in data gathering. Strategies data sampling will be used in data collection.

The study will be conducted in Yllana Bay View College main campus.
Theoretical Framework

This study will be grounded in three key theoritical framework to

understand the family support and well-being academic performance among

college students of in yYllana bay view college (YBVC).these are the social

learning theory (Albert Bandura 1960’s), system theory ( Ludwig von

Bertalanffy 1968) and Psychodynamic theory ( Sigmund Freud 1899).

Social learning theory (SLT)

Social learning theory was Ddeveloped by psychologist Albert Bandura

in the 1960’s. ,SLT pProposes that learning occurs through observing and

imitating the behavior of others (Bandura,1977). In the context of family

support and academic performance, on student focuses on how behaviours

of adolescents and parents are learned and reinforced within the family and

social environment. Family support and academic performance in the school

setting through observational learning, role,modeling,reinforcement and feed

back.

Systems theory was: iIntroduced by Ludwig Von Bertalanffy (1968).

According to Ludwig Von Bertalanffy this theory views individuals as part of

interconnected systems that influence their behavior. In relation to family

support and academic performance among college students in Yllana Bay

View College is to create a positive and empowering environment that


nurtures the student's academic growth, personal development, and overall

well-being. It recognizes the importance of a strong support system in

helping students thrive academically and prepares them for future success.

Psychodynamic Theory: Founded by Sigmund Freud (1899),this

theory posits that unconscious psychological conflict stemming from

childhood experiences can influence adult behavior (Freud,1933). In relation

to family support and academic performance among College students in

yllana bay view college Freud’s psychodynamic theory is one many

theoritical perspectives, and its application to family support and academic

performance may vary. Other factors such as cognitive, social, and

environmental influences also play a significant role in shaping academic

outcomes.

The social learning theory offers valuable insights into the relationship

between family support and the well-being of students. According to

Bandura's social learning theory (1977), individuals learn through

observation, imitation, and modeling of behavior. In the context of family

support, this theory suggests that students observe and learn from the

behaviors, attitudes, and interactions within their families, which can

significantly influence their well-being


Systems theory: According to Bowen, M. (1978) applied systems

theory to examine the impact of family support on the psychological well-

being of college students. The study found that families with higher levels of

cohesion, open communication, and support were associated with higher

levels of student well-being and resilience.

Psychodynamic Theory: According to Winnicott (1965) the

psychodynamic theory emphasizes the significance of family support in

shaping the psychological and emotional well-being of students.

Definition of Terms
The enlisted words are sequentially defined operationally and

conceptually. Referring to how or in what they are defined and related in the

study.

Emotional support. It refers to the intentional verbal and nonverbal way to

show care and affection for another.

Financial support. It refers to the providing assistance or resources in the

form of money or financial means to individuals.

Moral. It refers to the principles concerning the distinction between right and

wrong behavior.

Grades. It refers to the assessments of academic performance, often given in

schools, or universities to evaluate students understanding of a subject or

course material.

Attendance. It refers the act of showing up and taking part in a specific

activity, class, or event.

Class. It refers to a group of students who are taught together by a teacher.

Participation. It refers to the students performance in a course outside of

their assessment.

Oral recitation. It refers to the act of speaking or reciting information aloud. It

is a form of communication where individuals express their thoughts, ideas,

or knowledge through spoken words.


Attendance. Refers to the act of being present and participating in a

particular event, activity, or class. In an educational context, attendance

refers to regularly attending and being present in scheduled classes,

lectures, or educational programs. Regular attendance is important for

students to engage in learning, participate in discussions, and receive

instruction from teachers.(Cici,2024) this study it refers to analyze the

overall attendance rates of students in a specific educational institution,

program, or course.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter will serve presented the review related literature and

studies relevant to the current investigation. This can help the researchers in

conceptualizing the variables included in the study.

Family Support

Family support plays a crucial role in the overall well-being and

success of college students. Research has consistently shown that strong

family relationships, open communication, and a sense of belonging within

the family can significantly impact various aspects of a student life.

Emotionally supportive families can foster higher self-esteem, better

emotional regulation, and greater resilience in students, helping them

navigate the challenges of college life. Additionally, practical support, such

as financial assistance and guidance, can enable students to focus on their

academic and personal development, leading to improved academic

performance and a greater sense of overall satisfaction.


Furthermore, family support can facilities social integration, promoting

a stronger sense of belonging. By providing a family support becomes an

invaluable resource for students, contributing to their holistic growth and

well-being during this pivotal stage of their lives.

Emotional Support

Emotional support is a form of social support that involves emotionally

connecting with another person and actively listening, reassuring, or

providing advice (Armstrong-Carter et al., 2020a, 2020b). Individuals who

receive emotional support tend to report lower stress and better health and

researchers have suggested that emotional support may promote

relationship satisfaction, social connection, and well-being to a greater

extent than instrumental support, another form of social support that

involves tangible acts such as helping (Mathieu et al., 2019).

Emotional support within families refers to the provision of empathy,

understanding, and validation of feelings among family members. It involves

creating a safe space where individuals can express their emotions without

fear of judgment and receive comfort and reassurance from their relatives.

Emotional support within families has been found to contribute positively to

family cohesion, individual well-being, and overall family functioning

(Johnson & Smith, 2018).


When parents and siblings actively listen and validate each other's

emotions, it cultivates a culture of empathy and compassion. For students,

knowing that their family members empathize with their struggles and

celebrate their successes creates a sense of security and confidence. This

emotional validation reinforces positive self-esteem and resilience, enabling

students to navigate the ups and downs of academic and social challenges.

When students feel supported by their families, they are more likely to

seek advice and guidance when faced with difficult decisions or obstacles.

Family members can offer valuable perspectives and insights, empowering

students to make informed choices and overcome obstacles with confidence.

Financial Support

It refers to the provision of monetary resources or assistance to

individuals to help them meet their financial needs and achieve their goals. It

encompasses a wide range to aimed at supporting various aspects of an

individual’s financial well-being.

Financial support affects family support is by reducing financial stress

and improving the family’s ability to meet its basic needs financial resources

often experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, which can strain family

relationships and negatively impact the mental and physical health of family

members (Smith et al., 2018).


When families have the potential means to provide their children with

educational opportunities, extracurricular activities, and access to resources,

it can enhance the children academic performance.

Moral

A moral that strongly affects family support is loyalty. When each

family member is loyal to one another, they're more likely to provide

unwavering support through challenges and triumphs, fostering a stronger

bond and sense of unity within the family.

Moral for sustaining family support. By showing kindness, compassion,

and understanding towards one another, family members can navigate

challenges with greater resilience and unity. Research suggests that

compassion within families promotes emotional well-being and strengthens

familial bonds (Neff & Faso, 2018).

Well-Being

Refers to the state of being healthy, happy, and prosperous in various

aspects of life, including physical, mental, and emotional dimensions. It

encompasses a sense of fulfillment, satisfaction, and contentment with one's

life circumstances and relationships. Well-being is not just the absence of

illness or distress but also involves experiencing positive emotions, having a

sense of purpose, and being able to cope with stress and challenges
effectively. It is a holistic concept that considers the overall quality of life and

subjective experiences of individuals.

Grades

Can indeed impact well-being in various ways. Consistently poor

grades might lead to stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Conversely, high

grades can boost confidence but may also create pressure to maintain them.

Striking a balance and focusing on learning rather than just grades can help

maintain well-being (APA,2018).

It is a serving as a measure of academic achievement and proficiency

in various subjects. While they are intended to assess a student's

understanding and mastery of course material, the impact of grades extends

beyond the classroom, affecting students' well-being in profound ways.

Positive feedback in the form of high grades can validate a student's

efforts and abilities, boosting their self-confidence and motivation to

continue learning. Conversely, consistently low grades or perceived failure

may erode self-esteem and create a sense of inadequacy, leading to feelings

of discouragement and self-doubt.

The pressure to achieve high grades can contribute to stress and

anxiety among students. The fear of disappointing oneself, parents, or

teachers, coupled with the competitiveness of academic environments, can

create immense pressure to excel academically. This pressure can manifest


as test anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other symptoms of stress, ultimately

impacting overall well-being.

Attendance

Refers to the act of being present, particularly in a formal setting such as a

class. It serves as a measure of participation and engagement, indicating the

level of involvement or commitment of individuals to a particular activity or

group. In educational contexts, attendance is often recorded to track

students' regularity in attending classes, which can impact their academic

performance and overall success (Mullins, 2018). Similarly, in professional

environments, attendance records are maintained to monitor the students

punctuality which can influence their performance (Grossman, 2019).Class

participation. Refers to a student's active involvement in classroom

activities, discussions, and interactions. It involves actively engaging in class

discussions, asking questions, sharing opinions, and contributing to the

learning environment. Class participation promotes active learning, critical

thinking, and the exchange of ideas among students and with the instructor.

(Cici,2024) this study it refers to assess the impact of class participation on

students learning outcomes.

Attendance serves as a fundamental aspect of participation and

engagement in various settings, including education and activities. It reflects


individuals' commitment, responsibility, and accountability towards their

respective roles and obligations. It refers to analyze the overall attendance

rates of students in a specific educational institution, or course. Emotional

support. Refers to the provision of empathy, understanding, and care to

someone in order to help them navigate and cope with their emotions,

challenges, or difficult situations. It involves offering comfort, validation, and

encouragement, and creating a safe space for individuals to express their

feelings and seek guidance or reassurance.(Cici,2024)this study it refers to

provide insights into the importance of emotional support in educational

settings.

Class Participation

was associated with higher levels of academic engagement and self-

efficacy among students (Smith et al., 2019). When students actively

participate in class discussions, ask questions, and share their ideas, they

develop a stronger sense of ownership and investment in their learning. This,

in turn, boosts their confidence and belief in their academic abilities,

positively impacting their emotional well-being.

Plays a significant role in the well-being of students. When students

actively engage in classroom activities, discussions, and interactions, it not

only enhances their academic performance but also contributes to their


overall well-being fosters a sense of belonging and connection. By actively

participating in class, students feel more connected to their peers and the

learning community. This sense of belonging promotes social well-being, as

students develop relationships, form friendships, and feel supported by their

classmates and teachers. It creates a positive and inclusive classroom

environment where students feel valued and accepted.

When students actively participate, they are more likely to be

mentally stimulated, challenged, and motivated. It encourages critical

thinking, problem-solving, and the development of communication skills.

Engaging in discussions and sharing ideas allows students to broaden their

perspectives, think creatively, and develop a deeper understanding of the

subject matter. This intellectual stimulation contributes to their overall

cognitive well-being.

Class participation enhances self-confidence and self-esteem. When

students actively contribute to class discussions, ask questions, and share

their thoughts, they gain confidence in their abilities and ideas. Positive

feedback and recognition from teachers and peers further boost their self-

esteem. This sense of confidence and self-worth positively impacts their

emotional well-being, as they feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in

their contributions. Positive learning environment that encourages

exploration and curiosity. When students feel comfortable and supported in

expressing their ideas and opinions, they are more likely to take risks,
explore new concepts, and engage in deeper learning. This positive learning

environment nurtures their intellectual curiosity and passion for learning,

contributing to their overall well-being and lifelong love of learning.

Oral Recitation

Oral recitation activities in the classroom helped boost students' self-

confidence and public speaking skills (Aziz et al., 2018). The researchers

observed that as students gained more experience in presenting their ideas

and responding to questions in front of their peers, they developed a

stronger sense of self-assurance and the ability to effectively communicate

their thoughts can also enhance students cognitive well-being (Jocelyn et

al.,2022).

When students engage in oral recitation, they have the opportunity to

interact with their classmates, exchange ideas, and learn from one another,

strengthening their social connections and sense of belonging within the

school community oral recitation can improve posture, breathing, and overall

physical confidence, which can have a positive impacts on the students

physical well- being.

Oral recitation refers to the act of speaking oFinancial support. Refers

to the provision of monetary assistance or resources to meet someone's

financial needs or obligations. It can include providing funds for education,

living expenses, healthcare, or other necessary expenses. Financial support


aims to alleviate financial burdens and ensure individuals have the means to

meet their basic needs and pursue their goals.(Cici,2024)this study it refers

to explore the relationship between financial support and academic

performance.

Grades. Refers to the evaluation and assessment of a student's

academic performance in a particular course or subject. They are typically

represented by numerical or letter-based symbols and are assigned by

teachers or professors based on the student's performance in assignments,

tests, projects, and other assessments. Grades serve as a measure of a

student's level of understanding and mastery of the subject matter.

students academic performance.

Moral support. Refers to the encouragement, guidance, and

reinforcement of someone's moral values, principles, and beliefs. It involves

offering support, advice, and positive reinforcement to help individuals make

ethical decisions, overcome challenges, and stay true to their values. Moral

support can come in the form of encouragement, affirmation, and being a

source of strength during difficult times.(Cici,2024)this study it refers to

define and establish criteria measuring moral support.

Oral recitation. Refers to the act of verbally presenting or reciting

information, such as answering questions, delivering a speech, or

demonstrating knowledge and understanding of a specific topic or subject. It


often involves speaking in front of an audience, such as a teacher or

classmates, and demonstrating comprehension and communication skills

through spoken words.(Cici,2024)this study it refers to provide insights into

the importance of effective oral communication, the impact on learning

outcomes, and the factors that contribute to successful oral recitation skills.r
