QUESTION 1

FIGURE 1, DIAGRAM SHEET 1 (attached), shows a cantilever steel frame secured

against a concrete wall at a bus stop. The frame is pitched at 30° and supports three
loads.

Use the following scales:

Space diagram: 110 mm = 5,5 m

Vector diagram: 1 mm = 2 kN

a
1.1 Use the graphical method to obtain the forces in the frame and distinguish

.z
between struts and ties. (5)

1.2 Determine the forces and angles at the reactions R and T. (4)

o
1.3 Draw a table with the headings MEMBER, MAGNITUDE and TYPE and
tabulate the answers. (6)

QUESTION 2
s
er
FIGURE 2, DIAGRAM SHEET 1 (attached), shows a lap joint formed by two
90 × 10 mm thick tie bars bolted together by means of SIX M12 Grade 4,6 bolts.
The maximum shear stress is 101 MPa.

2.1 Determine the resistance of the bolts due to shearing. The thread of the bolts
ap

is within the shearing plane. The pitch of the screw thread is 2 mm. (3)

2.2 Draw a neat sketch to show the thread of the bolt within the shearing plane. (3)

2.3 Make a large, neat drawing to show how a plate tears when a tensile force is
tp

applied. (3)

QUESTION 3

Reinforced concrete ground beams are constructed between columns to support

external brick walls. The ends of the ground beam rest on top of a concrete pad
foundation.

Draw, to scale 1:10, a vertical longitudinal section through one of the pad foundations,
the reinforced concrete column, ground beam and foundation wall.

Use the following specifications:

a
Pad foundation: 1 000 × 450 mm reinforced with Y16

.z
bars at 200 mm both ways
Reinforced concrete column: 270 × 270 mm reinforced with 4Y20
main bars and R8 binders at 200

o
centres
Reinforced concrete ground beam: 270 × 450 mm reinforced with 3Y20
tension bars, 2Y16 compression bars

.c
and R10 binders at 200 centres

Brick wall: s FOUR courses high

TWO diameter steel dowels are cast in the top of the foundation to secure the beam to
er
the foundation. Show at least 200 mm of the column above the ground beam.
Use single lines to indicate the reinforcement. The completed drawing must include all
labels and dimensions. [18]
